Here are the material that will work the best for your projects: Class 1 structural fill - The material you need for raising up stalls, pens or paddocks, arenas, roundpens, horse walking exercise paths, barn areas, etc. These areas need 2 - 4" of fill material. It compacts and stays compacted. Water does drain down through it, but most of the drainage will be from the high to the low side. It is guaranteed to be non-expansive. That means no clay. When it gets wet it doesn't get slick and slimmy. 1 ton covers 100 square feet (10 feet x 10 feet) 2 inches deep. When compacted it will shrink 2-3%, it is $16.95 per ton, plus sales tax and delivery. **Granite or River Rock Equine Crusher Fines ** - The best material for the top 2-3 inches of stalls, pens and paddocks. It is not recommended for deeper installations. The river rock and granite are made to the same specification or recipe; 1/4" minus. The granite is produced in Denver, the river rock north of town. It helps to keep the area dry by draining water down through the fines. It will compact, but not very much. It always stays soft on your horses and ponies hooves, whether shod or barefoot. It is also often used under artificial turf and sometimes under pavers. It is $24.95 per ton, plus sales tax and delivery. 1 ton covers 100 square feet (10 feet x 10 feet) 2 inches deep. Squeegee - 1/4" minus aggregate with a small amount of sand. It is the material between sand and pea gravel. It is used under stall mats, to improve drainage on rock hard stalls and pens and paddocks, mixed with sand in arenas and round pens to improve drainage, cut down wind loss. Also used to help keep the sand from braking down and getting dusty over time, for chicken houses and runs, under swing sets and trampolines and dog runs for dogs up to 50 pounds. 1 ton covers 100 square feet at a 2 inch depth. It is $26.95 per ton, plus sales tax and delivery. Pea Gravel - 3/8" aggregate. Used under stall mats and to help break up and stabilize hard clay soils, barnyard, driveway and trailer parking lot material, playground material, landscaping material around shrubs and bushes and under decks, dog runs for dogs over 50 pounds and some drainage applications. 1 ton covers 100 square feet 2 inches deep. It is $38.95 per ton, plus sales tax and delivery. Washed Concrete Sand - used for arenas and roundpens. It is $26.95 per ton plus sales tax and delivery. 1 ton covers 100 square feet 2 inches deep. Granite Class 6 (3/4" minus) Roadbase - the largest aggregate is 3/4" down to the minus or fines. It the best driveway, parking area base, overall, bar none. It compacts and stays compacted. It has a porosity index, which is a measure of how fast water filters down through it, but most of the drainage will be from the high side to the low side. It is also used for shipping container and garden shed base, under artificial turf, pavers, flagstone, for walkways and around fire pits, new arena and roundpen base, some foundation drainage uses, but Class 1 structural fill dirt probably works better for a little less money. It is $19.95 per ton plus sales tax and delivery. 1 ton covers 80 square feet (10 feet x 8 feet ) 2 inches deep. Recycled Concrete Class 6 Roadbase - it is made to the same specification (recipe) as the granite, but it is made from crushed and screened concrete. It can be used for most everything that the granite can, except for under artificial turf and pavers. It gets dusty when it dries out and many people dislike the smell.
