Turing Award recipient Jack Dongarra will be delivering his Turing Lecture, "A Not So Simple Matter of Software," at SC22. In it, he will examine how high-performance computing has changed over the last 40 years, look toward future trends, and discuss how a new generation of software libraries and algorithms is needed to use dynamic, distributed, and parallel environments effectively. People of ACM Interview MEET RALUCA ADA POPA Raluca Ada Popa is an Associate Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, where she is Co-Director of RISELab and SkyLab, two labs aiming to build secure intelligent systems for the cloud and for the sky of clouds, respectively. Her research interests include security, systems, and applied cryptography. Popa received the 2021 ACM Grace Murray Hopper Award for the design of secure distributed systems. In her interview, Popa discusses what inspired her to work in security and cryptography, the challenges and innovations in working with encrypted data, and the role of open-sourcing artifacts in her field. He has worked extensively in game design, behavioral and motivational design, design ethics, and computational creativity, and is most well-known for his pioneering work on gamification. In his interview, he discusses how he initially became interested in game design, recent advances in AI gamification, his role as Co-Editor-in Chief of ACM Games: Research and Practice (GAMES), and the impact of gaming on society and individuals. For Practitioners CONVERGENCE ACM Queue’s “Research for Practice” serves up expert-curated guides to the best of computing research, and relates these breakthroughs to the challenges that software engineers face every day. The revised Code of Ethics addresses the significant advances in computing technology since the 1992 version, as well as the growing pervasiveness of computing in all aspects of society.
