SOLAR ENERGY



Solar energy is radiant light and heat from the Sun harnessed using a range of
ever-evolving technologies such as solar heating, photovoltaics, solar thermal
energy, solar architecture and artificial photosynthesis.

It is an important source of renewable energy and its technologies are broadly
characterized as either passive solar or active solar depending on the way they
capture and distribute solar energy or convert it into solar power. Active solar
techniques include the use of photovoltaic systems, concentrated solar power and
solar water heating to harness the energy. Passive solar techniques include
orienting a building to the Sun, selecting materials with favorable thermal mass
or light dispersing properties, and designing spaces that naturally circulate
air.

The large magnitude of solar energy available makes it a highly appealing source
of electricity. The United Nations Development Programme in its 2000 World
Energy Assessment found that the annual potential of solar energy was
1,575–49,837 exajoules (EJ). This is several times larger than the total world
energy consumption, which was 559.8 EJ in 2012.

SOLAR ENERGY (JOURNAL)

Solar Energy is a peer-reviewed scientific journal covering research on solar
energy such as photovoltaics and solar heating, but also its indirect usages
like wind power or bioenergy. It is published by Elsevier on behalf of the
International Solar Energy Society. The editor-in-chief is Yogi Goswami.
According to the Journal Citation Reports, the journal has a 2013 impact factor
of 3.541.

Monocrystalline Solar Panel and a Victron MPPT Charge Controller. I monitored
the battery’s state of charge with a Victron BMV-712 Battery Monitor to ensure
the battery never reached full charge. When it got close to full, I’d turn on
some loads to discharge it. I’m happy to say the charge controller was in the
Bulk charge stage for 100% of the test! I ‘mounted’ the solar panel at the
optimal tilt and azimuth angles for my location (Georgia) and time of year
(April). Temperatures ranged from the 40s to the 80s. I cleaned the panel twice
during the test, and trimmed the grass in front of the panel to prevent shading.

   Modern technologies create opportunities for any state to switch to renewable
   sources of cheap energy from water, wind, or the sun. But for this to happen,
   of course, efforts must be made and several large-scale reforms and projects
   implemented, as was done, for instance, in Morocco. How did this country
   manage to build the largest concentrated solar power plant that generates
   electricity even at night? And what has enabled Morocco, which has meager oil
   and gas reserves, to become the largest energy importer in the Middle East
   and North Africa? Check out our video! Morocco is the only country in North
   Africa that does not have its own fossil fuel reserves and imports more than
   90% of its energy resources. Attempts to develop the industry led to
   electricity consumption increasing by 5.6% per year, and there is nowhere to
   take it within the country. The government spends billions of dollars
   importing fuel. To rid the state of energy dependence, King Mohammed VI set a
   goal: To generate 52% of electricity needs using green energy by 2030. But
   how will it be achieved? Hydro resources in Morocco are bad; most of the
   rivers dry up, and reservoirs built in the 1960s provide the population with
   drinking water, but their energy resource is limited. In 2008 the authorities

   Monocrystalline Solar Panel and a Victron MPPT Charge Controller. I monitored
   the battery’s state of charge with a Victron BMV-712 Battery Monitor to
   ensure the battery never reached full charge. When it got close to full, I’d
   turn on some loads to discharge it. I’m happy to say the charge controller
   was in the Bulk charge stage for 100% of the test! I ‘mounted’ the solar
   panel at the optimal tilt and azimuth angles for my location (Georgia) and
   time of year (April). Temperatures ranged from the 40s to the 80s. I cleaned
   the panel twice during the test, and trimmed the grass in front of the panel

Mod­ern tech­nolo­gies cre­ate op­por­tu­ni­ties for any state to switch to
re­new­able sources of cheap en­er­gy from water, wind, or the sun. But for this
to hap­pen, of course, ef­forts must be made and sev­er­al large-scale re­forms
and pro­jects im­ple­ment­ed, as was done, for in­stance, in Mo­roc­co. How did
this coun­try man­age to build the largest con­cen­trat­ed solar power plant
that gen­er­ates elec­tric­i­ty even at night? And what has en­abled Mo­roc­co,
which has mea­ger oil and gas re­serves, to be­come the largest en­er­gy
im­porter in the Mid­dle East and North Africa? Check out our video! Mo­roc­co
is the only coun­try in North Africa that does not have its own fos­sil fuel
re­serves and im­ports more than 90% of its en­er­gy re­sources. At­tempts to
de­vel­op the in­dus­try led to elec­tric­i­ty con­sump­tion in­creas­ing by
5.6% per year, and there is nowhere to take it with­in the coun­try. The
gov­ern­ment spends bil­lions of dol­lars im­port­ing fuel. To rid the state of
en­er­gy de­pen­dence, King Mo­hammed VI set a goal: To gen­er­ate 52% of
elec­tric­i­ty needs using green en­er­gy by 2030. But how will it be achieved?
Hydro re­sources in Mo­roc­co are bad; most of the rivers dry up, and
reser­voirs built in the 1960s pro­vide the pop­u­la­tion with drink­ing water,
but their en­er­gy re­source is lim­it­ed. In 2008 the au­thor­i­ties adopt­ed

Monocrys­talline Solar Panel and a Vic­tron MPPT Charge Con­troller. I
mon­i­tored the bat­tery’s state of charge with a Vic­tron BMV-712 Bat­tery
Mon­i­tor to en­sure the bat­tery never reached full charge. When it got close
to full, I’d turn on some loads to dis­charge it. I’m happy to say the charge
con­troller was in the Bulk charge stage for 100% of the test! I ‘mount­ed’ the
solar panel at the op­ti­mal tilt and az­imuth an­gles for my lo­ca­tion
(Geor­gia) and time of year (April). Tem­per­a­tures ranged from the 40s to the
80s. I cleaned the panel twice dur­ing the test, and trimmed the grass in front

SOLAR ENERGY



Solar energy is radiant light and heat from the Sun harnessed using a range of
ever-evolving technologies such as solar heating, photovoltaics, solar thermal
energy, solar architecture and artificial photosynthesis.

It is an important source of renewable energy and its technologies are broadly
characterized as either passive solar or active solar depending on the way they
capture and distribute solar energy or convert it into solar power. Active solar
techniques include the use of photovoltaic systems, concentrated solar power and
solar water heating to harness the energy. Passive solar techniques include
orienting a building to the Sun, selecting materials with favorable thermal mass
or light dispersing properties, and designing spaces that naturally circulate
air.

The large magnitude of solar energy available makes it a highly appealing source
of electricity. The United Nations Development Programme in its 2000 World
Energy Assessment found that the annual potential of solar energy was
1,575–49,837 exajoules (EJ). This is several times larger than the total world
energy consumption, which was 559.8 EJ in 2012.
