VIDEO: MAKE THOUGHTFUL CHOICES

VIDEO: MAKE THOUGHTFUL CHOICES

“You rarely have time for everything you want in this life, so you have to make
choices. And hopefully your choices can come from a deep sense of who you are.”
—Fred Rogers

One critical element of Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood is helping children understand
that we show kindness to other people by the choices we make. With that in mind,
we should always take care to make thoughtful choices.

Components of Thoughtful Thinking
Of course, if it were that easy then Mr. Rogers probably wouldn’t have needed to
make a TV show about it. It can be difficult to be thoughtful, but because of
his example, we can study two essential components of thoughtful thinking:

slowing down remembering others’ contributions to our lives

The most commonly used verb on Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood is “see,” which he used
675 times. He used near-synonym “look” 346 times, and “watch” only 59 times. The
abundant use of the word “see” was a conscious choice by the meticulous Mr.
Rogers to say exactly what he meant and nothing else.

To Be Thoughtful, Slow Down
During the opening of Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, the stop light in the
neighborhood is always yellow. This is Mr. Rogers’ way of telling his audience
to slow down a little bit. Mr. Rogers took this advice himself. In fact, modern
audiences might be taken aback by how slowly he seems to speak on his show.

He doesn’t speak slowly because he’s shy, but because he’s careful to choose
words that will empower his audience without sacrificing the importance of his
point. Taking a few seconds to think through what we want to say before we say
it lets us consider how our words might be received and shows our audience
respect.

To Be Thoughtful, Remember Those Who Came Before
When we invite people into our lives, we should remember that everyone comes
from their own neighborhoods, communities of people who have been behind each of
their successes. When we extend an invitation to an individual, we’re welcoming
and accepting their history too.

If we’re able to appreciate the history of those we invite into our
neighborhood, then we’ll have a better understanding of how to show them
kindness. We might also remember to embrace the parts of our own history that
can serve as a guide for kindness.

Watch: While accepting a Lifetime Achievement Emmy in 1997, Mr. Rogers uses most
of his time to remind us that someone has helped each of us achieve whatever
we’ve done to be proud of. In this way, he reminds us that we all come from
somewhere.

Take Action: Think of someone who’s helped you succeed in your life, and then
take stock of your interactions throughout the day. What would the person who
helped you be proud of on that day? What would they have advised you to do
differently?

SHOW WHAT YOU KNOW

Why can speaking more slowly help us make thoughtful choices in our
interactions?
Please provide an answer
When we speak too quickly, we can sometimes confuse people.
Speaking more slowly can help us make sure that we’re saying exactly what we
want to, and consider how what we’re going to say might be perceived.
Slowing down gives openings for others to ask questions about what we’re saying.
Speaking more slowly is generally interpreted as being non-threatening and
friendly.
