I APPLIED TO OVER 70 USER RESEARCH JOBS BEFORE MY FIRST INTERNSHIP.



During my Master’s program in Psychology, I worked in a mental hospital a few
days a week. The patients I longed to work with had mental illnesses such as
schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and dissociative identity disorder. I worked
with these patients in the hospital and criminals in a neighboring hospital to
get this experience. Over the two years, I completely burnt out and withdrew my
Ph.D. applications.

I was terrified. I had some debt from school and no viable career ahead. All of
my plans flew out the window. I grasped at straws to find the right job for me.
Could I be an interior decorator? Or a motivational coach? Or maybe I could
start my own business. I spoke to a few career coaches and still felt lost.

By some crazy stroke of luck, user experience fell into my life. I was at a
party when someone mentioned user experience. They told me it was about making
website and app experiences better for whoever uses them. This idea was
intriguing. I went home early and looked up this potential new career.

The instant I Googled user experience, I couldn’t stop reading. Everything about
the topic spoke to me. It felt like a beautiful mix of psychology and
technology. I believed I could use what I learned during my Master’s program and
apply it to user experience. I thought it would be an excellent fit for me.
Plus, it gave me a sense of control. I finally knew what I could do for the rest
of my life.

The biggest problem?

I had no idea to get started.

I took the General Assembly User Experience Course, but that primarily focused
on design, rather than research. I left the course confident that I would NEVER
be a designer, but unsure where to go next.

I read all the books, scoured the internet for any guides or blogs on the
subject of user research, volunteered for side projects, worked for free, joined
hackathons, and did all the self-learning I could.



I never wanted people to experience the feelings I went through when trying to
scramble together resources and figure out where to start. I want everyone to be
able to follow their dream, regardless of how far a reach it is.

That’s why I created the Introduction to User Research Self-Paced Course - to
make sure anyone who wants to be a user researcher can.
