There was some significant progress in West Mainland through the course of yesterday. The properties still without power are in parts of Voe, Brae and West of Mainland Shetland. Helicopters have been patrolling the West Mainland area, pinpointing key sections of damage to help our teams to target their efforts and get homes reconnected quicker than expected in some areas. SSE said that subject to no unforeseen challenges, we’re confident that the vast majority, if not all, homes will be reconnected by Sunday. There’s a chance that some small clusters of properties in the West Mainland, particularly west of Bixter, may be reconnected on Monday. Additional power line crews travelled through the night to join the teams to continue to make every possible effort to accelerate this timescale. Some properties that have had their power restored may be temporarily disconnected for a short period of time as engineers progress with the restoration plan and connect more properties to the network. Mark Macdonald, Head of Region at SSEN Distribution, said: Mark Macdonald, head of region at SSEN Distribution, said: “[Friday] has been about making significant progress as heavy snowfall continued, reconnecting towns and villages area-by-area as we continue to repair, rebuild and restore the local electricity network ahead of our forecasts. “Our 150-strong team of engineers and contract partners will continue to work this evening and be joined at first light tomorrow by more crews, with everyone focused on working together to restore power as quickly as we can. Thanks to the huge effort today, we’re confident we’ll reconnect the vast majority, if not all, homes by Sunday, with a chance some small clusters will be restored on Monday. “We recognise that being without power for a prolonged period of time can be challenging, particularly for those most vulnerable. We’d like to thank Shetland Islands Council, our resilience partners and local Shetland communities for supporting those who need it most and pulling together to keep spirits up. If anyone has any concerns for themselves or others, please call us immediately on 105.” Headlines News ENGINEER: WORK STILL TO BE DONE IN “CHALLENGING” CONDITIONS December 17, 2022 | 8.00am Linesman Ivan Mitchell described the damage which caused blackouts across the island as “fairly serious” in a video released by SSEN. Mr Mitchell has been one of the more than 100 crew to arrive in Shetland working to restore power. Mr Mitchell said: “Conditions have been challenging [although] the sun is out a little bit today. The extent of the damage is fairly serious, so there is a lot of work to be done and we have to get through this as quick as we can.” Northern parts of Shetland and the West Mainland have been without power since Monday. And as of Friday morning, as many as 1,700 people were still without electricity. SUBSCRIBE TO OUR PRINT AND DIGITAL EDITIONS SUBSCRIBE NOW Already a subscriber? He visited Bixter Community Hall where he met members of the local community along with Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) and Police Scotland teams, before chairing a further meeting of the Scottish government resilience Room. Mr Brown said: “The situation in the west of Shetland remains extremely difficult for many people and businesses without power. “There has been a fantastic community and cross partner response. I met a range of residents at Bixter Hall today and what has struck me most is the huge team effort at play in a set of very difficult circumstances. Everyone is mucking in and helping each other, from making food and keeping each others spirits up, to checking on vulnerable members of the community. It really is quite extraordinary. “There is now a 125 strong team of engineers working flat out to restore power to the remaining properties off supply. “Shetland Islands Council is caring for vulnerable people in care homes and hospital and is contacting those with medical needs. “Police Scotland advice remains to stay at home [and] find ways to stay warm. The Scottish government will continue to do what it can to assist partners in resolving the situation as quickly as possible.” News NEW LIFE PASTOR SAYS ‘FALSE’ CONVERSION THERAPY CLAIMS CAUSING ‘DIVISION’ December 16, 2022 | 11.42am Claims that the New Life Church uses conversion therapy are “false” and are causing “division, discord and baseless fear” locally, its pastor has said. 0 READ FULL STORY LATEST BOOKS FROM THE SHETLAND TIMES BOOKSHOP VIEW ALL * Books History THE SHETLAND BUS Our bestseller now reprinted for a fifth time. SSEN said in a statement that progress was made by engineers who arrived in Shetland during the week. They said that due to severe damage sustained and access in the West Mainland, particularly West of Bixter, they “anticipated” that power can be restored by early next week. The areas with most people affected are Walls, Rewick, Skeld, Papa Stour and Sandness, where there are more than 450 still without power. People there, as well as Clousta, Twatt and Bixter should expect to have power by Monday. Mark Macdonald, Head of Region at SSEN Distribution, thanked those affected for their patience during the last week. He said: “Armies of engineers have descended upon Shetland over the past 48 hours to restore power to homes and businesses across the islands, and more are on their way. We’ve made significant progress today in continued challenging conditions, reconnecting 750 homes across the islands. “Alongside an improvement in weather conditions and thanks to the incredible support from Shetland Islands Council and our resilience partners, the severe access issues we faced earlier today have eased. This has enabled our teams to have a clearer picture of the significant damage to our network and make good progress in restoring power to our customers.” News IN THIS WEEK’S SHETLAND TIMES December 16, 2022 | 7.00am In today’s (Friday, 16th December) edition of The Shetland Times: * Thousands of properties remain without power as SSEN races to rebuild its power network. * A mother says she thought her and her three-month-old baby were going to be stranded in her car overnight during Monday’s traffic backlogs in the weather. * A Walls woman speaks about having no power over the last few days. * Bixter Hall volunteers tell of the community effort to ensure people are looked after. * New Life Church pastor John Rollo calls claims his church practices conversion therapy “false”, and says they are spreading division. * ARTS – A review of Open Door Drama’s performance of Jack and the Beanstalk. * SPORT – Shetland Valkyries sign off for the festive break with another victory. 0 Headlines News COUNCIL LISTS SCHOOLS TO REOPEN TOMORROW December 15, 2022 | 4.32pm Some schools and early learning settings will re-open tomorrow [Friday]. SSEN said that core parts of its damaged infrastructure were replaced yesterday, with “kilometres of overhead line” having to be put in. More engineers have arrived off this morning’s NorthLink ferry to further boost the efforts. The company said that, depending on weather and travel availability, some homes could be forced to wait until the weekend for power. Helicopters surveyed overhead power lines on Wednesday to assess the network, with “significant damage” in the West Mainland and Voe. Meanwhile, Shetland Islands Council has directed people to halls in their area which are offering food and warm spaces. A full list of the open halls provided by the SIC is listed in the post below. 0 SHETLAND PROPERTIES VIEW ALL * TO RENT HJALTLAND HOUSING HAS AVAILABLE TO REGISTERED APPLICANTS One bedroom sheltered house in Stanegarth, Lerwick We have a one bedroom, two person, semi-detached sheltered house available to rent. … December 16, 2022 | 6.00am * News SCHOOLS AND COLLEGE TO STAY SHUT ON THURSDAY December 14, 2022 | 4.38pm All schools and early learning settings will stay closed on Thursday, the SIC has said. The Lerwick and Scalloway campuses of Shetland College will also remain shut. Area commander Stuart Clemenson said there were significant snowdrifts on roads at Eshaness and Sandness, with the majority of side roaads “impassable”. “While we wait for power to be restored to all homes, I continue to urge people to stay at home and find ways to stay warm,” he said. “It’s really important that we all check in with vulnerable people when severe weather affects our communities, and that community spirit will be extremely important in Shetland at the moment.” 0 News ALMOST 3,000 CUSTOMERS STILL WITHOUT POWER AS SSEN PROVIDES UPDATE December 14, 2022 | 12.17pm Almost 3,000 SSEN customers remain without power as the company battles to fix damage broken overhead lines. SSEN said its efforts to restore power were boosted on Wednesday morning by the arrival of a further 15 power line crews. More teams and equipment are also expected to arrive in the next 24 hours. In total, 125 additional engineers will support the local teams in the restoration effort. Around 2,800 customers remain without power in Voe, Whalsay, Brae, Yell and the West Mainland. SSEN said those in the West Mainland and Voe may not have power restored until the end of the week, due to the significant damage to overhead power lines. Helicopter patrols will fly over SSEN’s overhead power lines over the next day or so to assess the extent of the damage. “We continue to work very closely with Shetland Islands Council, the Care for People Group and the Local Resilience Partnership to ensure extra support is provided to those who need it through the coordination of welfare and the connection of mobile generation to power rest centres,” the company said. “We recognise that extended power outages are challenging for our customers and for those currently affected – we’re offering to reimburse reasonable food costs for a hot meal if customers can travel safely to areas with power. “Customers are entitled to claim up to £30 per person for every 24 hours they’re without power and are asked to keep copies of their receipts. “Anyone who may need support in arranging alternative accommodation should call our customer contact centre on 105.” 0 YOUR CUSTOMERS COULD BE WATCHING ADVERTISE WITH US Attract new customers and gain more business ENQUIRE NOW News TWO HEALTH CENTRES FORCED TO CLOSE December 14, 2022 | 11.31am The Unst and Walls health centres have had to close because of a lack of power. NHS Shetland said patients in those areas who required urgent assistance should call their health centre phone numbers, and they would be advised on how to get help. The health board said most health centres were open but operating with reduced staff. “New appointments are limited to urgent ones only,” NHS Shetland said. “If your enquiry is not urgent please leave it for another day.” The Gilbert Bain Hospital is operating as normal – anyone with an appointment scheduled who cannot make it should phone the relevant department to rebook. “If you are in any doubt about your appointment, please get in touch,” NHS Shetland added. 0 News UPDATED: SHETLAND RECREATIONAL TRUST FACILITIES TO RE-OPEN ON THURSDAY December 14, 2022 | 10.06am Shetland Recreational Trust’s (SRT) leisure centres will re-open on Thursday morning. Whalsay Leisure Centre will remain closed as it is still without power. SRT is encouraging customers to check social media or call ahead to make sure any activities are still going ahead. Facilities will be open to anyone who has been affected by the weather or power outages who need access to showers or warm spaces. Head of operations Robert Geddes said they would “strongly advise” people to check with their leisure centre before travelling. “This is particularly important for early opening times and later in evenings when travel conditions are most challenging for customers and staff,” he said. “We’ve asked staff to ensure social media channels are kept up to date with information and will in particular update at 6.30am for 7am openings if there’s any disruption expected.” 0 SHARE YOUR PHOTOS, VIDEOS AND STORIES WITH US START SHARING Headlines Life in Shetland News MULLED JUICE AND MINCE PIES IN SCALLOWAY December 3, 2022 | 3.22pm Carol singing and mulled apple juice helped set the festive scene in Scalloway. 0 READ FULL STORY Headlines Life in Shetland News TRACTOR RUN TO BRING FESTIVE CHEER December 2, 2022 | 9.59pm Tractors bedecked with Christmas lights will once again take part on a convoy through Lerwick this festive season. 1 Comment READ FULL STORY SHETLAND ACCOMMODATION POWERED BY STAY.SHETLAND VIEW ALL * Self Catering Lerwick & Gulberwick From £142.86 - £214.29 p/n HARBOUR VILLA Quality four-bedroom detached villa with sea views in a quiet residential location yet only a short stroll from all town centre amenities. The tradition dates back to the 19th century, and sees the business community being asked to make a donation towards the event. The 2023 Guizer Jarl Neil Moncrieff and treasurer James Leask were doing the rounds today (Monday), and two members of the committee will be doing likewise each day over the next two weeks. While visiting The Shetland Times, the incumbent jarl said: “It is getting really exciting as we get closer to the day, especially after a two-year absence. “The collecting sheet is part of the tradition, and it is days like today that it starts to hit home that we are nearly there. “We really appreciate the generosity of the public, and particularly the business community, in helping make Up-Helly-A’ happen.” The money goes towards the ever-increasing costs of the event. Each year the jarl will ask an individual to design and create the collecting sheet for him – and this year it fell upon artist Dirk Robertson, whose creation is related to Mr Moncrieff’s chosen viking, a secret still to be revealed.
