RECENT PHISHING ATTEMPT SIMULATION

Oooops, you clicked on a phishing link!

PLEASE READ FULL DOCUMENT.

IT Security team recently conducted a phishing simulation to assess how well you
can spot cyber security threats.
Our records show you clicked the link in our phishing email.
Thankfully, our link wasn’t harmful.  But it’s important you read the following
information to avoid getting caught in
a real-life phishing attempt against Alterna.
Malicious third parties use emails as Trojan Horses to take control over the
target computer, steal sensitive information
or disrupt our operations.

Prevent the next phishing attack from succeeding:

Verify the sender email domain before clicking a link or opening an attachment

 * Alterna emails will always come from the @alterna.ca domain.
 * Verify email domains from third parties.

Verify links before clicking them

 * Before clicking a link, make sure it points to a legitimate URL by hovering
   over it with the curser.
 * Links on mobile devices can be verified by long-clicking (keeping the link
pressed with your finger for a couple of seconds).

Beware of attachments
 * If you were not expecting an attachment from the sender, contact them before
opening the email to ensure it was in fact from them.
 * Do not open an attachment to verify if it is malicious.

Lookout for Login Pages or Forms asking for sensitive details
 * Never enter passwords or sensitive information into forms sent via email,
unless you were expecting such an email, or you are sure of the sender
   address.

Be suspicious of context, tone and signatures
 * If a vendor urgently asks you to verify information or an attached quote, or
if you are being notified of a package that could not be delivered:
   * call them to verify they actually sent it, especially if you haven’t
     requested it.
 * Does the Alterna email signature say IT-department? We call it
IT-ServiceDesk. Make sure you look for incorrect terminologies.

If you receive a suspicious email, please report it using the Report Email
button in your Outlook toolbar.
