An illusion of life." Searchlight Pictures has revealed the first teaser trailer for the new Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Revolutionary Road, Skyfall, 1917) film titled Empire of Light, his intimate love story about cinema set at an English coastal movie theater during the 1980s. It's premiering at the Toronto Film Festival and will likely show up in Telluride, before opening in theaters this December. Olivia Colman and Micheal Ward star in this poignant story about human connection and the magic of cinema, directed by Sam Mendes and captured by iconic cinematographer Roger Deakins. I'll watch it just for Deakins' shots. "Ward gives an exceptional performance opposite Colman, who realizes another remarkable character, equal parts sweet and shocking, as a woman filled with emotions that are considered socially inappropriate to express." The film's cast also includes Colin Firth, Toby Jones, Tom Brooke, Tanya Moodie, Hannah Onslow, & Crystal Clarke. With music by Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross. Well this looks amazing!! Another gorgeous love letter to the magic of movies and how much they mean to us, how much they can change us. 'Misfits.' One Word. Who doesn’t love a brief like that? So, we went all in." This vibrant, energetic short film is a quick watch and is worth your time if you need a rejuvenating jolt of inspiration. Repeater is a short film made by the VFX studio called Carbon, and it was created as the title film at the OFFF Festival in Vienna. This starts out pretty tame, but quickly descends into full-on psychedelic, acid trip beauty. It's all about being one-of-a-kind and learning how to express that uniqueness into the world instead of hide it. I would watch more of this story go on!! It has barely even 4 minutes of footage but it's mesmerizing. It's a showcase for Carbon and what they can create, but it's also a creatively stirring little film about bucking the trends and making something magical in your own way. I can't help wondering after watching this if that big magic mushroom at the end is a wink about psychedelics. "We have to be at peace in ourselves…" 1091 Pictures has revealed an official trailer for psychedelic / psychological thriller film titled To the Moon, from actor / filmmaker Scott Friend now making his directorial debut. This premiered at a few film festivals last year and should be out to watch later this year. Struggling addict and TV actor Dennis retreats to his remote family home with his wife Mia in a last ditch effort to detox and save their marriage. Their isolation is disrupted when Dennis' estranged brother Roger unexpectedly arrives in the middle of their first night, pushing the couple's commitment to each other to the limit as Roger infiltrates their relationship. As Dennis' nightmares and actions become more disturbing, they are tasked with distinguishing reality from hallucination. The small cast features Scott Friend, Madeleine Morgenweck, and Will Brill. This really does look pretty weird and trippy, with plenty of teases in this trailer but thankfully it doesn't show the whole film this time. An official French trailer (with English subtitles included) has debuted for the film Novembre, also known as just November, a reference to the November 13th, 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris. The film premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival playing Out of Competition, the latest from French director Cédric Jimenez. The intense thriller follows the Anti-Terrorism unit's attempt to hunt down anyone involved in the attacks in the days following the terror. The film stars Jean Dujardin as the leader of the police division, with an ensemble cast featuring Anaïs Demoustier, Sandrine Kiberlain, Jérémie Renier, Lyna Khoudri, Cédric Kahn, Sofian Khammes, Sami Outalbali, Stéphane Bak, Annabelle Lengronne, and Raphaël Quenard. This isn't the most impressive trailer overall, but it does have an intense build up as they send more police out to arrest and interrogate. Will they find all the guys? Watch the Trailer › 📽 › Posted on August 24 in Foreign Film, To Watch, Trailer | 1 Comment GEORGE MILLER TALKS ABOUT GENRES & STORIES IN '3000 YEARS' FEATURETTE By Alex Billington "The nature of George is – he loves being original, and he has a passion to get every image perfect." MGM is preparing to release the new George Miller movie Three Thousand Years of Longing in theaters this weekend. So the marketing campaign is launching into its final few debuts and that includes this new 2-minute featurette with a few interviews with George Miller and the two lead actors. A lonely scholar, on a trip to Istanbul, discovers a Djinn who offers her three wishes in exchange for his freedom. What she wants is love, but can and should he grant it to her? Along their journey together they explore time and passion and the incredible powers of love. Tilda Swinton co-stars with Idris Elba, with a massive ensemble cast including Aamito Lagum, Burcu Gölgedar, Matteo Bocelli, Kaan Guldur, and Alyla Browne. I'm a big fan of this film and I hope it finds the right audience. MOre than anything, I just enjoy hearing George Miller talk about it and since he's currently filming the next Mad Max movie down in Australia, this might be one of the only interviews we'll get from him for the release of 3000 Years. I hope he talks more about it. Continue Reading › 📽 › Posted on August 24 in Featurette, To Watch | Comments LOOK AWAY! FULL TRAILER FOR ZEMECKIS' NEW 'PINOCCHIO' WITH TOM HANKS By Alex Billington "Why on Earth would you want to be real when you can be… famous?!" Disney has revealed the full-length official trailer for their own live-action adaptation of Pinocchio, starring Tom Hanks as Geppetto. This new film is a remake of the 1940 Disney animated classic, which is itself based on the 1883 Italian book The Adventures of Pinocchio. Hanks is joined by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Pinocchio, a wooden puppet carved by Geppetto, who is turned into a living puppet by the Blue Fairy. Cynthia Erivo also co-stars with Luke Evans, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the voice of Jiminy Cricket, Keegan-Michael Key as "Honest" John, a deceptive red fox, and Lorraine Bracco as Sofia the Seagull, a brand new character. With Kyanne Lamaya as Fabiana, Giuseppe Battiston as Señor Stromboli, and Lewin Lloyd as Lampwick. Disney is giving this one the same treatment as The Lion King and Aladdin before it, but unfortunately it looks like trash. Pinocchio doesn't even feel "live-action", just a 3D CGI version of the original animation. And the rest of it looks so bad. At least we have Guillermo del Toro's version out later this year, because this is so cringe. When they kill, we kill." Holy! Sh*t! Strap in – this looks AWESOME! Netflix has debuted the full official trailer for Athena, the latest from French filmmaker Romain Gavras (The World Is Yours). He teams up with the talented filmmaker Ladj Ly, who co-wrote the script and co-produces this, to make a film about youth clashing with police in France. Hours after the tragic death of their youngest brother in unexplained circumstances, three siblings have their lives thrown into chaos. This is premiering at the 2022 Venice Film Festival which kicks off next week and it looks like it's going to knock us out. It looks like Ladj Ly's Les Miserable meets La Haine meets Snyder's 300, with a "war" kicking off in the streets of Paris. Athena stars Dali Benssalah, Alexis Manenti, Anthony Bajon, Sami Slimane, and Ouassini Embarek. I really love these kind of rise up and fight back movies, and this looks visually extraordinary in every possible way. So many fireworks, so many amazing shots. Can't wait to watch it soon. Watch the Trailer › 📽 › Posted on August 24 in Foreign Film, To Watch, Trailer | 1 Comment JASON MOMOA TAKES US INTO DREAMLANDS IN 'SLUMBERLAND' FIRST LOOK By Alex Billington "This is the world of dreams… you can wish for whatever you want here." Netflix has revealed the first look teaser trailer for Slumberland, the new Francis Lawrence-directed fantasy adventure movie (for the whole family!!) arriving this fall. In-between wrapping up The Hunger Games saga and starting work on making The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which is filming now, Lawrence made this movie. A young girl discovers a secret map to the dreamworld of Slumberland, and with the help of an eccentric outlaw traverses dreams and flees nightmares, with the hope that she will be able to see her late father again. Lawrence is a visual filmmaker who knows how to make magical worlds feel grounded & real, and he brings that splendor to this story. Jason Momoa co-stars as Flip, with Marlow Barkley as Nemo, and a cast including Chris O’Dowd, Kyle Chandler, Weruche Opia, India de Beaufort, and Humberly González. This almost looks like Inception but if it was made for kids, especially dropping a "you can jump from dream to dream" line. This seems like it might be tons of fun, but I'd prefer to watch it on a big screen not on my TV at home. Watch the Trailer › 📽 › Posted on August 24 in To Watch, Trailer | 2 Comments NAOMI WATTS IN TRAILER FOR US REMAKE OF CHILLING 'GOODNIGHT MOMMY' By Alex Billington "Don't you think something's different…?" "I don't think that's our mother…" Amazon has revealed the first official trailer for the US remake of the chilling Austrian horror thriller Goodnight Mommy, which will be streaming on Prime Video this September. After undergoing cosmetic facial surgery, a woman returns home to her isolated house in the woods. When her identical twin sons arrive at her remote home they begin to suspect that something isn't right. This is a fresh English-language remake of an acclaimed film from 2014 originally titled Ich Seh, Ich Seh (and released as Goodnight Mommy in the US) that is a very dark, super messed up horror. This new one seems to channel the spirit of the original with a few different twists and turns. Naomi Watts stars with Cameron Crovetti & Nicholas Crovetti as the two twins, plus Peter Hermann and Jeremy Bobb. It's a bit unfortunate they're sending this streaming right away without a theatrical release, but hopefully it will entice more folks to watch this and perhaps (re)visit the original, too. Ready to break free?" One last look! Well Go USA has revealed a final official US trailer for the Korean epic action sci-fi movie Alienoid, opening in US theaters this week (starting August 26th). We already posted three other trailers for this movie before, but they keep hyping it up with more more more. A tale of two eras, Alienoid follows two Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392) gurus seeking a legendary, time-bending blade as they unexpectedly cross paths with modern-era people hunting down a dangerous alien concealed inside a human's body. This sounds and looks awesome. The sci-fi action fantasy features a cast including Ryu Jun-yeol as the master swordsman, Kim Tae-ri as "a woman who shoots thunder", Kim Woo-bin, So Ji-seob, Yum Jung-ah, Kim Eui-eung, Lee Ha-nee, and Jo Woo-jin. I totally want to bring everyone I know to the theater to watch this when it plays this week. Let's have a blast. Watch the Trailer › 📽 › Posted on August 24 in Foreign Film, Sci-Fi, To Watch, Trailer | 1 Comment JEON JONG-SEO IN WACKY THRILLER 'MONA LISA & THE BLOOD MOON' TRAILER By Alex Billington "If you see this girl - do not look in her eyes!!" Saban Films has debuted a trailer for a wacky superpowers thriller titled Mona Lisa & The Blood Moon, the latest from filmmaker Ana Lily Amirpour (best known for A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night). This first premiered at the 2021 Venice Film Festival a year ago, but so many critics hate that it has been forgotten until now. The film is a "mind-bending adventure" set in the swampy neon-lit streets of New Orleans. At its center is a girl with strange and dangerous abilities who escapes from a mental asylum and rejoins the chaos of modern-day civilization, on the hedonistic streets of the French Quarter. It stars Jeon Jong-seo (from Burning) as Mona, Kate Hudson, Craig Robinson, Altonio Jackson, Ed Skrein, and Evan Whitten. I really, really did not like this watching it in Venice, it's trashy and hollow and aimless. That might be just what some of you want to see, and if so, then have fun. Watch the Trailer › 📽 › Posted on August 23 in Indies, To Watch, Trailer | 2 Comments OFFICIAL US TRAILER FOR FRENCH DANCE ROMANCE 'WAITING FOR BOJANGLES' By Alex Billington "I should have kept our feet on the ground." Blue Fox has released an official US trailer for Waiting for Bojangles, a French romantic drama involving dance and love and family. It already opened in France in January under the title En attendant Bojangles, and is finally coming to US theaters this September. Every night in their Parisian apartment in front of their little boy, Camille and Georges dance to their favorite song "Mr Bojangles". With them, there is only place for fun and fantasy. They must be referring to the "Mr. Bojangles" originally by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. The film stars 5-time César Award nominee Romain Duris, 4-time César Award nominee Virginie Efira (also seen in Benedetta), and César Award winner Grégory Gadebois, with newcomber Solan Machado Graner as a young boy in the south of France who recounts the epic love story of his parents – from madcap highs to heartbreaking lows. It seems like it's borrowing the magical realism of Amelie for another charming French love story. This is a fabulous trailer - worth a watch.
