Despite the inconsistency between the impressive growth in the household survey
and disappointing number in the business survey, it seems the economy is still
recovering at a decent clip. Looking beyond this report to the wider economy,
there is no reason for job growth to have slowed down. There are plenty of job
openings, the factors that have kept people out of the labor force are fading,
and while the Omicron variant may slow recovery eventually, this data is too
early to have been affected. Overall, however, these confusing signals indicate
that we still have a labor market with a long way to go until it is recovered.

20% of Americans are considering freelancing. Among those, 73% cite the ability
to work remote or flexibly as a reason why.

Those considering freelancing—10 million people—would represent a significant
17% increase in the total freelance workforce when compared to the 57 million
people who freelanced in all of 2019.

METHODOLOGY

Research was conducted by independent research firm ClearlyRated. Survey data is
used to understand hiring trends and sentiments among hiring managers. More than
1,000 U.S. hiring managers were surveyed through a third-party, independent
online sample between June 24, 2021 and July 21, 2021. Overall margin of error
of ±3.06% at 95% confidence level.
