 * MUSIC PRACTICE WITH BANDMATES AS A SPORT

A friend of mine once said that the time we spent playing music together was
the best time of his life.

We started a band when we were 14 and practiced almost every week until we
were 21. Now, years later, I’ve been trying to think of anything else in my
life that feels like those practices.

I’m not talking about the big things—like playing shows, going on tours, or
throwing release parties. I’m thinking about the simple, everyday part of
being in a band: music practices.

   MUSIC PRACTICE AS A SPORT

The first thing that comes to mind is sports. Playing in a team feels kind of
similar. You have scheduled practices, teammates, your sport equipment (your
   gear), and competitions (gigs).

The difference is that in sports, you usually have a coach—someone with
experience and a vision to guide you. In bands, especially newer ones, you
rarely have that. It’s just you and your bandmates figuring things out on
   your own.

   MUSIC PRACTICE AS MEDITATION

Another thing it reminds me of is meditation retreats. You go to a space with
other people, focus on one thing, and share an experience that you can’t
   quite explain or touch.

That feeling happens most often when you’re in sync with your bandmates—maybe
during a jam or improvisation. But sometimes, it can even happen in a regular
practice. You all lock in, and suddenly, it feels like something special is
   happening.

MUSIC PRACTICE AS A HOBBY GATHERING

It’s also a bit like a hobby meetup. It’s like walking into a comic book
store or a model shop and knowing there are people who share your passion.

When you’re in a band, you probably have similar tastes in music or interests
in gear. You can spend hours talking about pedals, arguing about genres, or
just geeking out about the music you love. It’s not just about playing—it’s
   about sharing a common language.

   MISSING BAND PRACTICES

If you’re someone who misses band practices, maybe it’s time to find people
and start again. Sure, it might not be exactly like you remember it. You
might even regret it for a moment. But it’ll remind you of the connection,
the creativity, and all the experiences that make it worth it.
