The far-right group said the 55-year-old, who has been with the BNP since 1995,
will be replaced by Adam Walker who has been appointed acting chairman.

Mr Griffin has relinquished his position as head of the BNP two months after the
group lost their only seat at the European Parliament in a disastrous set of
election results.

Mr Griffin, who was declared bankrupt in January, has taken up the position of
president within the BNP.

> Nick Griffin steps down as BNP leader

The BNP said they were "united in their support" for Mr Griffin's replacement Mr
Walker.

After being ousted as an MEP in May Mr Griffin accepted the BNP would be
described as a "racist" outfit.

The party now only have two local councillors across the UK.

Speaking to Sky News he said: "Yep, we are indeed what you call 'racist'".

He also claimed supporters of the UK Independence Party (Ukip) would come back
to the BNP when they realised Nigel Farage will not stop immigration.

Mr Griffin became the leader of the BNP in 1999, four years after joining the
party.

In 1998 he was convicted of distributing material likely to incite racial hatred
and previously was a member of the National Front.
