AT WOMEN'S WORLD CUP

ByJames Walker-Roberts

Published 28/07/2023 at 06:42 GMT

ARGENTINA AND SOUTH AFRICA BOTH CLAIMED THEIR FIRST POINT AT THE WOMEN'S WORLD
CUP AS THEY DREW 2-2 IN DUNEDIN. SOUTH AFRICA HAD BEEN 2-0 AHEAD EVEN AFTER
SEEING CAPTAIN REFILOE JANE CARRIED OFF ON A STRETCHER. BUT ARGENTINA FOUGHT
BACK TO SECURE A DRAW. SWEDEN AND ITALY LEAD GROUP G HAVING BOTH WON THEIR
OPENING GAMES OF THE TOURNAMENT. THEY MEET ON SATURDAY.

That is special! Mbappe creates something out of nothing

Argentina scored two late goals as they fought back to claim a 2-2 draw with
South Africa at the Women’s World Cup.
South Africa looked on track to pick up their first-ever World Cup win as goals
from Linda Motlhalo and Thembi Kgatlana put them 2-0 ahead.

But Sophia Braun pulled one back for Argentina in the 74th minute before Romina
Nunez headed in to level the scores.

The result means both sides pick up their first point in Group G and are two
points behind Italy and Sweden, who play on Saturday.
“We don't take our chances. It comes back to haunt us every time," said South
Africa boss Desiree Ellis.
"How many chances did we create? How many final third entries did we have that
we did not complete? We were in complete control of the game and we just needed
to finish it off.
"We lost the ball a lot in certain areas. It's criminal. It hurts a lot. We have
to take responsibility - it has to be better.
"That was a great opportunity to put us a step ahead [in the group] but it is
not all lost. We have put ourselves in this position by not taking our chances."

South Africa could be without captain Refiloe Jane for their final group match
after she was stretchered off in the 18th minute.
Jane was carried off the pitch following a collision with Argentina midfielder
Florencia Bonsegundo and was replaced by Kholosa Biyana.
Glasgow City’s Motlhalo gave South Africa the lead when she tapped in from
Kgatlana’s pass.

The goal was initially ruled out for offside but VAR showed that Kgatlana was
onside.
Kgatlana should have made it 2-0 when she sliced wide from close range after the
break.
But she finished from a similar position to score in the 66th minute after good
work from Jermaine Seoposenwe to win the ball back.
Argentina’s comeback started when Braun reduced the deficit with a brilliant
strike from outside the box.
Nunez then glanced in a header from a right-wing cross to make it 2-2.
Argentina face Sweden in their final match while South Africa play Italy.
