Mostly not a how-to book, although there is some of that. It is more about what
relationships with dogs really entail, and what is required to have a good
relationship based on what dogs need to be happy and reliable companions. The
emphasis of the book is on the important role human leadership has in the life
of dogs, and what being a leader to dogs means on their terms. This book offers
a perspective on leadership in the context of dogs living with humans as
companions. There is no shying away from controversial topics such as the role
aversives play in the process of providing complete information to a dog in the
form of corrections for unwanted behavior. The authors succeed in establishing
that corrections for unwanted behavior do not necessarily create adverse
consequences or unintended side effect, nor are relationships with dogs ruined.
There is much to say toward a recommendation for reading this book. There
clearly is throughout an underlying and unifying thread of thought that there is
something unique and special about the bond between dogs and humans, and this
book is essentially about that bond and the reasons behind why that is the case.

Even though I will want the authors to sign a copy for me, I had to purchase the
Kindle version also, so that I could read snippets while traveling or in those
small chunks of time "between" other tasks.
My very first dog came with copies of the monks' earliest books. What I learned
from those books has lasted me through adulthood and many beloved companions. In
a word, what I learned from that thoughtful prose was Respect. What does it mean
to meet a dog with respect? To treat a dog with respect?
This new book is exciting in that it picks up there, and deepens the
conversation. It is a small miracle that we can form such deep, true friendships
across the barrier of species. When our dogs are a mystery to us, to whom can we
turn to understand what may be going on in their minds, or how our
well-intentioned actions might in fact be perpetuating a miscommunication rather
than resolving it?
Again and again, I will turn to the wisdom, humor and respect of these trainers.
Thank you Marc Goldberg & the Monks of New Skete, for furthering the
conversation and opening up yourselves to your readers, so that we all may enjoy
deep and lasting relationships with our canine companions.

I got a rescue pit bull less than a month ago, and was recommended to read one
of the books. I will go on to read their others. They describe the concepts
behind what dogs need and how to be a good pack leader for your dog. These
concepts have immediately been helpful to us and I have already reviewed
sections again throughout the day when applicable.
Their guidance has been helpful in many ways. One example is in teaching my dog
how to relax by herself and not need constant human attention. I was allowing
her on the couch whenever she wanted, where she would bark or paw for my
attention. I started teaching her to not get on the couch unless invited, and
although the puppy dog looks kill at first(!), she seems more content and calm.
She will instead lay at my feet and rest. This is just one example from me, and
it may be imperfect, but I wanted to share to explain that this book has helped
immediately!

As a dog trainer I cannot say how excited I am that this book is available.
Having witnessed first hand the amazing techniques of both the Monks of New
Skete and Marc Goldberg I am happy to add this book to my library. Marc Goldberg
is one of the most naturally gifted trainers I have ever seen. I have attended
several conferences just to see his work up close and I can say with certainty
that my relationships with my own dogs have been profoundly enriched through
what I have learned from him. This book provides the direction to help
understand your dog in a very relatable way in order to identify and eliminate
the humanizing issues so commonly found in many pet homes. Many tools and
techniques are effective in accomplishing a specific behavior goal, what this
book so effectively communicates is the spiritual connection that drives why it
matters in the first place.
Do not pass this book up.

I have been buying dog books since the day I brought home my own lovely pup 8
years ago. I tried to raise the poor thing as a cat, but that's a whole
different story I'm too embarrassed to tell. I really enjoy dog books and this
one has been no exception. In fact, I got half way through it and decided it was
a perfect book for my friend to read as well. We had been discussing during a
visit that dogs just don't seem to be the dogs we knew as children. Our
expectations of them had become a little far fetched and they just weren't
allowed to do what they need to do, or rather just be dogs. That's why the title
of this book grabbed my attention right away. The writing is personable,
personal, and engaging. I am currently on my second read of it hoping to absorb
even more guidance the second time around.

For those who love dogs for what they are, wonderful beings who offer us a
unique chance to enter into their world and live it with them. So much common
sense and dog knowledge in this book, I found myself nodding along with it! Have
met so many of the "Where's Annie" types, so intent on using the dog for their
own emotional crutch that they ignore completely the dog's right to live the
life it needs, not fulfill our selfish needs. They are not furbabies, they are
not replacement children or spouses, they are not dolls or fashion accessories,
they are not put on earth to make your life better.
BUT if you take the time and effort to try and give them the best life you can,
by understanding what they NEED, THEN they WILL make your life so much better
and you will find out just how wonderful it is to share their world.
Your job is to make them able to live safely in this world, it's not much of a
job compared with the joy they give when you see THAT look in their eyes when
they look at you.

Ya leeí The art of raising a puppy, how to become your dog's best friend y este
libro. No estoy seguro de cuál fué mejor. Cada uno tiene su aportación
particular, no son repetitivos. Me parece muy sensata la manera de enseñarte a
relacionarte con tu perro no muy idealista, no ruda, ninguno de sus libros es un
"como hacer que te ame tu perro en 7 días". Su forma de escribir siempre con su
encantador toque espiritual (lo dice alguien no religioso). Muy recomendables
sus tres libros! Marc definitivamente le da un toque diferente y bueno a este
libro en particular.
