SAFE AND SOUND PRESCHOOL MAGAZINE

Safe and Sound is a magazine helping parents and tamariki across Aotearoa learn
about how to stay safe growing up in the big wide world. We’ve consulted with
both educators and parents to create a comprehensive, age-appropriate
publication, designed for use in learning centres as well as a resource for
parents and caregivers to take home.

KIDS ZONE

Wāhi Tamariki- Every issue comes with a pull-out Kids Zone section featuring
Kiri the Safety Kiwi. Kiri leads kids on adventures and helps them learn how to
stay safe in all kinds of situations with fun interactive activities like
colouring in, drawing and matching games.

INTERNET SAFETY

Haumarutanga Ipurangi- Nowadays kids can access anything with the touch of a
finger on your tablet or phone. We’ve put together tips you can follow to make
sure what your tamariki see online is age-appropriate and suitable for young
children.

FIRE AND EMERGENCY SAFETY

Haumarutanga Ahi- Fire and Emergency NZ has provided a whole range of great
guidelines to help keep you and your whanau safe in the case of a fire or other
emergency. Guides for creating emergency plans, how to check your smoke alarms,
knowing when to call 111 and more are all available in Safe and Sound.

SCOOTERS, BIKES, SKATEBOARDS AND ROAD SAFETY

Ngā Kutarere, Paihikara, Papawīra a Haumarutanga Rori- We feature information
from ACC and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency to make sure you and your tamariki
know how to stay safe out on the roads. We have guides for childproofing your
driveway, safely crossing the road, and properly fitting car seats. Playing on
scooters, bikes and skateboards is good fun and a great source of exercise, but
it’s best to stay safe whilst doing so. Safe and Sound has tips for correctly
wearing a helmet, how to navigate on the footpath, and everything else you and
your kids need to know to play safely.

WATER SAFETY

Haumarutanga Kātao- Swimming is an essential part of any Kiwi childhood, but
it’s important to follow precautions to help keep your tamariki safe. We have
official guides on understanding the risks of rivers, lakes, beaches and
swimming pools so you can enjoy playing in the water safely, as well as
everything you need to know about boats and ferries.

SAFETY AROUND THE HOME

Haumarutanga ki roto te kāinga- One of the best things you can do to help keep
your family safe is make sure your home is set up safely for your young ones.
Safe and Sound gets pointers from child safety experts on how to minimise risk
of injury around your home with proper preparation and precautions.

ANIMAL SAFETY

Haumarutanga Pōtiki- Growing up alongside animals can enrich your child’s
development and teach them useful skills about nature, friendship and empathy.
But making sure your kids understand animal boundaries and maintain good hygiene
means you can have proper fun with your furry friends.

VISUAL AND HEARING

Kanohi me Rongonga- Monitoring your child’s hearing and vision as they get older
helps nurture their senses so they can experience the world to the fullest. We
include tests and activities which stimulate your child’s senses and improve
their perception.

HEALTHY EATING

Kai Tōtika- Young bodies need healthy food so they can handle growing up in the
big wide world. Safe & Sound has consulted with Aotearoa’s best child
nutritionists to bring you recipes and guides which make healthy eating easy.
