HOW EDGE COMPUTING AND 5G ARE SHAPING THE UTILITY GRID OF THE FUTURE

THE COMBINATION OF EDGE COMPUTING AND 5G NETWORKS IS ENABLING UTILITIES TO
MANAGE DATA MORE EFFECTIVELY AND SHRINK DECISION-MAKING AND RESPONSE TIMES,
WHILE ALSO REDUCING THE BURDEN ON CENTRALIZED DATA INFRASTRUCTURES.

The vertical farming bubble is finally popping
By Travis Jones 3 minute Read

Not so long ago, utility companies would check a customer’s meter once a
month—12 times a year. Today, data can feed in from smart meters every 15
minutes, totaling over 35,000 readings per meter per year.

Every day, IoT devices and other smart technologies generate terabytes of data
that can help utilities operate more efficiently and reliably … and sometimes
the sheer volume of that data can create logjams that lead to inefficiencies.
The combination of edge computing and 5G networks is enabling utilities to
manage data more effectively and shrink decision-making and response times,
while also reducing the burden on centralized data infrastructures.

THE DYNAMIC DUO OF EDGE COMPUTING + 5G

Edge computing enables data to be processed at or close to the location where
the data originates. As utilities typically have technology assets dispersed
across broad geographical areas—often in remote, inhospitable locations—this
computing model is an ideal fit for certain applications, particularly those
requiring rapid decision-making and response. The availability of 5G wireless
compounds the benefits of edge computing by enabling faster communication
between edge devices and edge servers, allowing devices to be monitored and
controlled in real or near real time.

WHERE UTILITIES ARE LEVERAGING EDGE COMPUTING

Utilities across the country are implementing edge computing in almost every
location where data is produced. Let’s look at a few examples of how this
technology is being implemented.

SUBSTATIONS

Edge computing creates greater autonomy for individual substations, allowing for
real-time identification of and response to incidents. For example, AI-enabled
cameras and sensors can automatically detect transformer leaks so that repair
crews can be alerted, and smart transformers can regulate power supply
dynamically in response to fluctuations in demand and other factors.

FIELD ASSETS

Edge computing at the field level enables utilities to dynamically monitor and
manage assets such as utility poles, wires, switches, and transformers. Images
from drones and truck-mounted cameras, for example, can be analyzed on edge
servers to detect potential equipment failure or vegetation encroachment,
enabling faster response times.

CONSUMPTION POINTS

While first-generation smart meters are capable of little more than one-way data
reporting, emerging generations could have built-in analytics engines capable of
producing actionable insights for both customers and grid operators. Within the
next few years, we could see meters that alert customers in real time when
they’re charging an EV during a higher-price time period or notify grid
operators of anomalies or faults at the individual meter level.

EDGE COMPUTING AND THE SELF-HEALING GRID

advertisement

Time is of the essence when responding to incidents such as potential equipment
failures that could lead to outages or even create fire hazards. With
5G-supported edge computing, utilities avoid the latency that arises when data
from cameras and sensors must travel to a central location for processing. When
data can be analyzed locally, power can be rerouted away from problem areas
almost instantly, minimizing the duration of outages and averting potentially
life-threatening situations.

GET IN ON THE ACTION

The idea of implementing edge computing in your organization may seem daunting
at first, but these innovations are within reach for utilities of nearly any
size. Here are a few practical measures to get you started:

1. Begin with an assessment. Implementing edge computing based on outdated
schematics can be a recipe for wasted time and resources. Start with an
evaluation of your current infrastructure to ensure edge servers are positioned
to operate within present-day environments.

2. Build a strategy aligned with specific business goals. Taking a strategic
approach to edge computing—with your utility’s business goals in mind—can help
ensure optimal allocation of resources and maximum return on your investment.

3. Plan for the long game. Consider where your utility will be 5, ten, even
twenty years from now and ensure that your edge computing infrastructure will be
able to keep up with the pace of change.

ANOTHER STEP TOWARDS THE GRID OF THE FUTURE

As the smart grid continues to take shape, legacy models of “all centralized
data processing, all the time” are becoming less and less feasible. The
combination of edge computing and 5G wireless creates new opportunities for
faster edge data analysis, enabling near real-time responses to anomalies that
could cause outages or create hazardous conditions. While not without its risks
and challenges—for example, utilities must put security measures in place for
each edge location—edge computing helps ensure that as the volume, variety, and
velocity of grid data increases, utilities can maintain and improve their
service to customers and their commitment to protecting communities.
