DOUBLE VICTORY: THE AFRICAN AMERICAN MILITARY EXPERIENCE
From the Revolutionary War to the War on Terror, African Americans have served
in the United States military. In defending their country, they hoped to earn
freedom and citizenship and contribute to a changed America where racial
equality was possible.

Since 1872, more than 200 women have sought, been nominated for, or received
votes for the presidency of the United States. Yet, only two notable Black women
have run for president from a major political party: Shirley Chisholm and Kamala
