With twinkling lights on every high street and shops filled with seasonal goodies, it feels like Christmas everywhere you go. Some businesses are dedicated entirely to Christmas, with shops opening purely for the holidays. If you live in the Halsted area, you may have seen signs pop up recently advertising Maplestead Christmas barn. The barn, found in Little Maplestead, says it has Christmas trees, gifts, wreaths, decorations, craft stalls at the weekends and more too boot. I don't live very far from it so thought I would pay it a visit, however, I went on a Wednesday afternoon and now wish I had waited until the weekend. I was confused when I got there however as I couldn't figure out where to park as there were no other cars around other than a couple that looked to be in a staff area. I ended up just parking my car on a gravel area and soon worked out that the reason there were no other cars was that I was the only person there. I tentatively walked into the barn, worried that it was shut, even though the website said it is open every day. Fortunately, it was open, it was just empty with only myself and two members of staff there. The barn was absolutely freezing, of course, I did expect a barn, in December to be cold but I felt so sorry for those working in there as after just spending five minutes walking around I had a real chill. Inside the barn The barn looked absolutely beautiful, with a huge Christmas tree and lights wrapped around the beams it was a real picture. Along the walls there were a few sections with some Christmas decorations in them, most seemed to be Gisela Graham which is pretty common for a venue like this and all in classic colours like red, gold and silver. PROMOTED STORIES In terms of gifts, I was expecting more. There was a shelving unit with a few candles, which I will admit looked and smelt lovely, a table with a couple of gin gift sets, some gin bottles and a couple of other little bits like gonks but that was about it. Maplestead Farm also sells homegrown Christmas trees, and there were a few displayed out the front of the barn, so if you still need a tree it's worth a look. There were also a few artificial wreaths which were quite nice too. Some of the decorations available During the week you can buy a selection of hot and cold drinks and some cakes. These are really reasonably priced, with a hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows costing just £2.50. I soon wished I had visited at the weekend, as although the barn was still nice to go to, there was not a lot going on. At the weekend there are craft stalls and hot food so I can imagine the atmosphere is a lot more festive. If you live nearby and fancy a quiet trip to somewhere festive I would say try a visit during the week, however, if you have got further to travel I would wait until the weekend, which is what I will be trying out.
