COMPANY

Lockheed Martin Space, one of the four major divisions of Lockheed Martin
Corporation, is a builder of satellites and spacecraft for government and
commercial customers. These satellites help with early warning of severe
weather, connect troops on battlefields, and manage GPS directions. The division
has 16,000 employees currently, and it’s headquartered in Denver, Colorado with
additional sites in California, Alabama; and elsewhere in the United States and
United Kingdom. The company is part of the joint ventures United Launch Alliance
and United Space Alliance.

CHALLENGE

Every two weeks, Lockheed Martin Space onboards about 85 employees. As managers
were too busy to support the constant onboarding, the onboarding team came up
with a buddy program to leverage peer-to-peer learning. For each employee, a
buddy is assigned as an informal source of information and knowledge sharing.
Before using Powtoon, the onboarding team conducted the Buddy Bootcamp with
training material on PowerPoint, which limited their creativity. The team was
looking for an innovative way to accelerate their peer-to-peer learning efforts
and engage the more experienced employees who were assigned as buddies. Since
buddies come from different departments, employee levels and countries,
inclusion and diversity were key requirements for training content.




SOLUTION


SPEARHEADING PEER-TO-PEER LEARNING


To ensure the success of the Buddy Bootcamp program, the buddies themselves need
to be motivated to create peer-to-peer material. As the leader of the program,
Courtney Lockwood uses Powtoon to create videos that resonate with both the
buddies and the new hires, accelerating the program’s learning curve.



FAST-TRACK TRAINING VIDEO CREATION


The onboarding team uses Powtoon templates as a starting place for peer-to-peer
training videos. This saves the team time and allows them to produce
high-quality videos with a quick turnaround. In addition, Powtoon features are
easy to use and make videos engaging, without having to spend much time on
creation.



INCLUSION THROUGH DIVERSE CHARACTERS


“We are big proponents of D&I. Powtoon’s character builder makes it really easy
to create videos with characters to represent different skin tones and cultures.
So, we get to create content that resonates with all our audiences. You can’t do
that on PowerPoint,” said Courtney Lockwood, Onboarding Specialist.
