A detour will be in effect starting Tuesday for drivers heading westbound on
Victoria Street West.

Drivers travelling westbound on Victoria Street West will need to navigate a
detour across Overlanders Bridge as the City of Kamloops builds a retaining wall
and safety fence near railway tracks in the area.

According to the city, crews will start work on Tuesday, Sept. 6. The detour
will be in effect during working hours until Sept. 23.

“Detours will be removed in the evenings and on weekends,” said a statement on
the city’s website.

“Eastbound traffic and access to businesses will be maintained at all times.”

According to a map posted by the city, westbound traffic will be detoured across
Overlanders Bridge to Tranquille Road.

Vehicles will turn right on Leigh Road, and will make another right-hand turn on
Fortune Drive to navigate southwards — back over the bridge — before continuing
to the west.

“Motorists should expect delays and use alternate routes if possible. Motorists
are asked to obey all traffic control personnel and signage when driving through
the construction zone,” the city said.

The city said the project is a requirement of a land transaction with Canadian
Pacific Railway. The city committed to build the safety fence in order to add
extra road surface and landscaping during the Victoria Street West Improvement
Project.

According to the city, the work involves constructing a small retaining wall and
350 metres of fencing, which will stretch from Overlanders Bridge to the Sun
Life building, located at 280 Victoria Street West.

Urban Appeal Landscaping has been contracted to complete the work.

The city said it expects the project to be complete by mid-October.
