<p>Markets ended <span>2021 </span>on a high note. But not long after the ball dropped on New Year’s Eve, they fell out of bed. It has been a tough go thus far in <span>2022</span>. The Morningstar Global Stock Market Index slumped
<span>5</span>.<span>2% </span>in January. Bond markets woke up with a hangover. After slipping <span>1</span>.<span>6% </span>in <span>2021</span>—its first calendar-year loss since <span>2013</span>—the Morningstar U.S. Core
Bond Index was down another <span>2</span>.<span>1% </span>last month.</p>
<p>Rocky markets, still-lofty valuations, and low interest rates have sent investors in search of alternatives to the asset-class staples of any well-diversified portfolio: stocks, bonds, and cash. In <span>2021</span>, investors
allocated more to liquid alternatives funds in any year since <span>2013</span>, pouring <span>$33</span>.<span>4 </span>billion into the category.</p>
<p>But what are liquid alternatives funds? Are they a good complement to traditional asset classes? And what are the odds that investors can succeed with these strategies? In this month’s cover, I dig into each of these questions in
turn.</p>
