SIGMA EXPANDS CANON RF-MOUNT LENS LINEUP WITH FOUR NEW APS-C PRIMES

Earlier this year, Sigma announced plans to release several of its DC DN APS-C
lenses for Canon's RF mount, making it one of the first third-party
manufacturers to sell autofocus RF lenses under license.

Recent Videos
next
stay

Today, the company has announced pricing and availability for four of those
lenses: the 16mm F1.4 DC DN, the 23mm F1.4 DC DN, the 30mm F1.4 DC DN and the
56mm F1.4 DC DN. On Canon's APS-C cameras, the lenses deliver full-frame
equivalent focal lengths of 26mm, 37mm, 48mm, and 90mm, respectively.

These prime lenses join two Sigma zoom lenses announced for RF-mount earlier
this year: the 10-18mm F2.8 DC DN, announced on October 5, and the 18-50mm F2.8
DC DN, which has been available for other lens mounts since 2021.

This brings the total number of Sigma APS-C lenses for RF-mount cameras to six,
significantly increasing the number of dedicated APS-C lenses available for
Canon's RF system. To date, Canon has released only a handful of slow RF-S zoom
lenses, along with a dual fisheye lens for VR or spatial capture, though users
can also use Canon's full-frame RF-mount lenses on its APS-C cameras.

The four Sigma F1.4 DC DN prime lenses join two F2.8 zoom lenses in Sigma's
APS-C lineup for Canon RF mount.

Image: Sigma

With Sigma's newly minted RF-mount lenses in the mix, Canon's RF mount should
become more attractive to APS-C shooters, especially those looking for dedicated
APS-C lenses with faster apertures or primes.

The six lenses are already available for Sony E-mount, Fujifilm X-mount, and
L-mount cameras. The 16mm F1.4 DC DN and 56mm F1.4 DC DN are also available for
Z-mount and Micro Four Thirds.

The Canon versions of the 30mm and 56mm lenses will arrive first, launching on
December 5. The 30mm F1.4 DC DN will retail for $369, and the 56mm F1.4 DC DN
will retail for $529.

The 16mm and 23mm lenses will follow on January 23. The 16mm F1.4 DC DN will
retail for $489, and the 23mm F1.4 DC DN will retail for $599.

I wonder what kind of licensing fees Canon’s charging. The MSRPs haven’t
suffered for it at least.

I don't think these unstabilized lenses with unusal focal lengths are that much
attractive for the R10 and R50/R100 users. I really would prefer 22mm and 53mm
f/1.8 IS lenses (35mm and 85mm FF equivalents) for a classical versatile
two-lens setup.

1. Ok, you want stabilization - but that drives up cost for those who don't need
it because they don't shoot at slow shutter speeds handheld or they have an R7
(or hypothetical future IBIS equipped RF-S camera).

2. These aren't unusual focal lengths at all. The 23 is virtually identical to
the 22mm you mentioned, and the 56mm is virtually identical to the 53mn you
mentioned. The 16mm is close to a 24mm FF equivalent, and the 30mm is a 50mm FF
equivalent. These are for all practical purposes a classical 24, 35, 50, and 85
FF equivalent primes. If you're fussing about tiny deviations rather than other
aspects of lens quality, you're fussing about the wrong things.

But your money, your choice.

You're right, the 23mm and 56mm are close enough to the full-frame 35mm and 85mm
equivalents. I somehow messed up the crop factor. However, I still maintain that
the optical stabilization would be very useful feature in lenses dedicated for a
camera (sub)system where 75% of available cameras lack IBIS.

Fair play re: stabilization. Just not something Sigma can offer on these
off-the-shelf lenses designed for other mounts.

A variety of four 1.4 primes is not that great? Is this a serious comment? Kudos
for mentioning stabilization, but the rest of that is very odd thinking imho.

I've used the old 22 f2 for many many years now and yes I wish there was a
updated version for RFS but I will gladly use 23 mm that 1 mm won't make a
difference in most use cases in comparison. It's not like going from 10 mm to 12
or 24 mm to 28.

Hopefully Sigma will start doing some zooms for the NIkon APSC line, although I
wonder if Nikon perhaps has that locked out for licensed third parties...?
Anyway, it would be nice seeing that the options for Z APSC shooters at least is
still limited in the zoom department.

I mean their existing Z lenses sound like they are very good for the money, but
we just need more (but I'm thinking that Nikon may be the one making the calls
in this case).

I would love to see the Sigma 10-18 come to Z mount, we really don't have a good

The 12-28 PZ has alright image quality. The Sigma 10-18 f/2.8 has impressed me.
When carrying an aps-c and full frame I can place on the Sigma 10-18 and set it
to 12.3mm on a full frame camera. Has a little vignette that is easily fixable
in post. Christopher Frost mentions this. Was surprised how sharp it was at
f/2.8. This coupled with a full frame zoom allowed me to cover multiple focal
lengths in a light package.

2050: Sigma Completes Its Ambitious 1mm Step Prime Lineup for Canon RF Mount

Sigma has finally achieved the seemingly impossible: a complete lineup of prime
lenses for the Canon RF mount and APS-C sensor, covering every focal length from
14mm to 105mm in precise 1mm increments. With 92 lenses to choose from,
photographers can now experience the ultimate in focal length precision.

However, in a plot twist no one saw coming, Sigma has reaffirmed that it still
has no plans to release lenses for full-frame sensors anytime soon. “We believe
the future lies in APS-C sensors and unprecedented focal length variety,” a
Sigma spokesperson quipped.

Rumor has it the company is already exploring a step 0.5mm lineup.

They will but it's not gonna happen anytime soon. They have shown us that they
are not "impossible" and gave Sigma (and Tamron) a deal on APS-C. I am sure
there are plans for FF already on the roadmap but that map includes upcoming
native RF releases by Canon before any 3rd party lens will be on the radar.

But it is moving (slowly) I reckon. The all new 28-70/2.8 is Canons attempt to
offer something less costly. My guess is that they want to see how that goes
before making any final decisions.

It's a shame Canon won't allow FF lenses. Canon shooters are missing out on some
excellent glass, like the Tamron 28-200 zoom, and others.

Dunno dman. So many Canon shooters have Stockholm syndrome and can’t believe
that Tamron, Viltrox and Sigma are making lenses as good, if not better, than
the first party manufacturers.

Excellent news. And remember, these can be used in FF cameras too. I think some
Canın cameras apply crop when using 4K + Digital IS. In this case, Sigma 10-18mm
and other f1.4 lenses would work great.
I am thinking to buy R10 soon and really looking forward to to these Sigma

Yes they will. Btw RF-S isn't a mount, it's just a designation for crop cameras.
Mechanically, it's all RF so you can mount these on the R3 if you wish so. It's
not like EF-S which had limited physical compatibility.

Yes they can be used but bear in mind that none of these lenses have image
stabilisation and given that the R50 is a non stabilised body it may be a factor
for you to consider.

It’s debatable whether the 30mm DC DN is a better bargain than the Canon RF 35mm
F1.8 IS STM. The latter is 2/3 stop slower, but it’s optically stabilized and
also FF compatible. But the other three look great.

By that token, none of these make sense because there are similar (yet slower)
RF lenses from Canon. But for someone not wishing to go FF, they are all very
significant, as thanks to Sigma, the subsystem gets its first lenses faster than
f/6.3 - these and the two zooms from a few months back. :-D

For R7 owners it is not that much of a debate. And the Canon being FF compatible
would be a negative point here, as it is bigger than it needs to be.

30mm on APS-C is actually a very sweet focal length (about 48mm FF eqv). I have
the really old EX HSM version on my R7 sometimes. Only 2mm (50 vs 48 FF eqv) may
not sound like a lot but there is a noticeable difference and makes it useable
for street where the traditional FF 50mm always felt juuuuust a notch too tight.

35mm on APS-S is 56 on fullframe. A completely pointless FL if you ask me.

We'll have to wait until tests on Canon bodies, but the RF 35mm macro is
typically said to have slow autofocus, and the Sigma 30 autofocus is usually
described as good (although there have been some glitches). If the Sigma does
focus faster, that's a real benefit.

Also, the newness of one lens, the age of another, makes the price gap half what
it could be. The Sigma is often on sale in other mounts for under $300, which is
a noticeable price decrease versus the $450 for the RF on sale. But the Sigma is
new on Canon at $370...

@larkhon - Size is about the same. The Sigma on Sony mount is 40g lighter, and
about the same dimensions (skinnier but longer, 65x73mm vs the RF's 75x63).

@boldcolors - Personally, I love a tight fifty. A 55mm, a 58mm, APS-C 40mm, etc.
Particularly on crop sensors, the extra reach feels like it helps with subject
separation. If comparing the Sigma 30mm to a micro 43 to an Oly 25/1.8 or Pana
25/1.7, the extra reach is almost like a half a stop wider aperture.

@theBitterFig: sure, I was just pointing out that, considering both the Sigma
and Canon EF-M 32mm being f1.4 lenses for APS-C, and considering the difference
in size there usually is between FF and APS-C 35mm f1.8, I'd rather have a Canon
RF-S 35mm f1.8 than the current RF one.
Needless to say, the Sigma is not bad in comparison.

Would much rather use the sigma that is sharp at 1.4 than the rf35 that is just
okay at 1.8 and basically needs to be stopped down to f2 or 2.2 to really get
crispy.

From what I can tell the RF 35 is actually decent optically wide open... But not
good enough to replace my EF 35 IS. Relatively similar performance more or less.
Besides obvious aberrations that will be more apparent on a R5 for example, this
lens just rocks and I've been using it for years. It doesn't have the smoothest
bouquet with busier backgrounds especially trees, otherwise it holds its own.

And it's nice to see a comment section that's not filled with trolling about "we
don't need stabilization for lenses" nonsense. I guess those guys are out
shooting or on vacation or their keyboards are broken LOL

Yeah too bad it's not a smaller pancake style like the 22 f2. And it's the most
expensive of the bunch at nearly 600. I'd like to have this lens but unless that
price drops a lot I'll probably never end up getting it.

And if Canon doesn't refresh that boring, non IS RFS line of small bodies, I'll
probably end up getting none of it because my EF M gear works great. I'm never
buying a large size ASPC camera again, been there done that, those large sizes
are for full frame only now (for me).

Awesome addition for APS-C RF shooters, those two Sigma DN zooms plus a couple
of these DN primes and the Canon 100-400 f5.6-8 can make for a really compact
yet really complete kit...

Still no 3rd party FF offerings on RF tho huh?

In my personal opinion what happens is that Canon behaves like a drug dealer,
luring unaware victims with cheap, quality 3rd party options to its APSC system
that it doesn't intend to develope itself - because what really matters to the
company is selling its hard drugs stuff in form of its own full format lenses.
Counting on the assumption that if APSC user swallows the catch by getting some
of their full format glass as an addition to their camera, they can fish them
into the pool of locked full frame mount as soon, as the client wants to get a
"more professional" camera.

Well yeah..its AWFUL, and Canon acting at its worst impulses.

Canon happily took the 50 mm 1.4 slot and turned into an upmarket L variant so
they could charge a lot more even with that garbage distortion and forced
profile to fix it. On competing systems 1.4 lenses are in the enthusiast
category as well. Where it's been mostly except for Canon's market segmentation
craziness.

As much as I need a new 51.4 on canon, no way I would buy that thing. That lens
is a charade of cheaper / smaller glass optics being fixed up by software. Nope.

I'm taking the money that would go to Canon and investing in a s52 body. I can't
wait to get rid of this r62.
