THE UTMOST HAPPINESS

The God of Small Things used standard fictional props to suck in the
‘global-liberal’ reader, before inserting uncomfortable slivers of doubt into
his world-view. It spun a tale of individuals in a colourfully post-colonial
setting, along well-established lines of Anglophone novel-writing, sometimes
brushed with magic, behind which lurked the politics of its author. The God of
Small Things, as a novel, hailed from the mainstream lineage in Anglophone
writing-those many children of Jane Austen and Charles Dickens-though, in Roy’s
case, thankfully midwifed by John Berger. The God of Small Things, whose radical
reputation was far in excess of its structure and style.

But it is more experimental a work than Roy’s excellent first novel, Not that
this is a perfect novel, or that it even deserves all the hyperbolic accolades
being showered on it in certain quarters.

No amount of showing can save a bad writer, and even an excess of telling can
result in an interesting novel by a good writer-as

Had a writer less acclaimed than Arundhati Roy sent this novel as a manuscript
to a major agent, it might have been returned with a note: ‘Show more, tell
less.’ Of course, no agent writes notes like that to the Roys of the literary
world, and of course the advice is rubbish.

KNUT HAMSUN GLOD

Well, that is, not all day yesterday, I certainly didn't think about you all day
yesterday."ĭo you know what I've called you? I have called you Ylajali.

No, what's your name? Goodness, I almost forgot again! I was thinking all day
yesterday that I must ask you. Most people today know Hamsun's fame as a writer
rather than his success as a farmer. What's your name? Really, you must tell me
what your name is." It is only toward the end of the brief notice that one
learns that Knut Hamsun won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1920 and that he
is the author of such distinguished novels as Hunger and Growth of the Soil. I'm
madly in love with you, and it won't do me a bit of good. Sometimes your eyes
are so radiant, I've never seen anything like it, they look like flowers. "I'm
sitting here getting fascinated by you, at this moment I'm thoroughly
fascinated. What a wonderful pleasure to be sitting in a human dwelling again,
hear a clock ticking, and talk with a lively young girl instead of with
myself!Īh, how sweet you are!" I said. My heart was thumping, the blood coursing
warmly through my veins. “I sat looking at her with rapt attention.

WHITEOUT ADRIANA

Some people deal with their anxiety by reading (or watching) thrillers and
horror. “I’ll do it.”Īll of this made me remember that I had started Anders’
romantic suspense thriller, Whiteout, a while ago but hadn’t gotten far.

She snares my gaze and doesn’t let it go, proving how firmly I’m already hooked.
I bend down, tangle my fingers in the hair at her nape, and press my forehead to
hers, imprinting myself on her, though I’m the one who’ll come out of this
burned. I also hadn’t realized that the forehead press could be as sexy as a
doorway lean. I realized on rereading that I hadn’t given Adriana Anders enough
credit for the joyful way Jerusha discovers her own body and sharing experiences
with Karl. Here’s how my brain works: I was still swooning over Giulio and
Zahra’s Italian lessons in The Hitman and I suddenly flashed to Jerusha and
Karl’s sex lessons in Daddy Crush, so obviously I had to reread that.

TRANSIT CUSK

Filtered through the impersonal gaze of its keenly intelligent protagonist,
Transit sees Rachel Cusk delve deeper into the themes first raised in her
critically acclaimed novel Outline, and offers up a penetrating and moving
reflection on childhood and fate, the value of suffering, the moral problems of
personal responsibility and the mystery of change.

In the city, she is made to confront aspects of living that she has, until now,
avoided, and to consider questions of vulnerability and power, death and
renewal, in what becomes her struggle to reattach herself to, and believe in,
life. The upheaval is the catalyst for a number of transitions – personal,
moral, artistic, and practical – as she endeavours to construct a new reality
for herself and her children. In the wake of her family’s collapse, a writer and
her two young sons move to London.

LOVE CAN'T CONQUER BY KIM FIELDING

If you liked Rattlesnake, you will like this book, which also features two very
real, imperfect MCs, heartwrenching angst, strong secondary characters, and a
hard-earned HEA. Love Can't Conquer reminds me of Fielding's Rattlesnake, which
ended up on my top 10 books of 2015 list. I can't put her books down, and this
one was no exception.

This is another gorgeous contemporary love story from Kim Fielding, whom I blame
for many, many sleepless nights. Now they need to decide whether love is truly a
powerful thing or if, despite the old adage, love can't conquer all. A former
addict who struggles with anxiety and depression, Qay doesn't know which of his
secrets to reveal to Jeremy-or how to react when Jeremy wants to save him from
himself.ĭespite the pasts that continue to haunt them, Jeremy and Qay find
passion, friendship, and a tentative hope for the future. Qayin Hill has almost
nothing but skeletons in his closet and demons in his head. As if dealing with
Donny's issues doesn't cause enough turmoil, Jeremy meets a fascinating but
enigmatic man who carries more than his fair share of problems. His
ex-boyfriend, Donny-lost to drinking and drugs six years earlier-appears on his
doorstep and inadvertently drags Jeremy into danger. Now in his forties, he's an
urban park ranger who does his best to rescue runaways and other street people.
Bullied as a child in small-town Kansas, Jeremy Cox ultimately escaped to
Portland, Oregon.

Peter’s Square in the early hours before the pope arrives for Easter Mass, when
vandal gulls swoop in to destroy the elaborate floral display.

Intrepid as ever, she travels from leopard-terrorized hamlets in the Indian
Himalaya to St. Roach tags along with animal-attack forensics investigators,
human-elephant conflict specialists, bear managers, and “danger tree” faller
blasters. These days, as New York Times best-selling author Mary Roach
discovers, the answers are best found not in jurisprudence but in science: the
curious science of human-wildlife conflict, a discipline at the crossroads of
human behavior and wildlife biology. What’s to be done about a jaywalking moose?
A bear caught breaking and entering? A murderous tree? Three hundred years ago,
animals that broke the law would be assigned legal representation and put on
trial.

Join “America’s funniest science writer” (Peter Carlson, Washington Post), Mary
Roach, on an irresistible investigation into the unpredictable world where
wildlife and humans meet. Jayne B Reviews / Book Reviews animals / biology /

KINGDOM COME BY LYNESSA JAMES

I decided to simply write vicariously.įiona: Do you have a specific writing
style? I enjoy being taken into a world or story that I may never have the
chance to experience, not to mention, may be dangerous. – I have always read as
a form of escapism. Felt it was safe to say I might be able to do it, LOL!įiona:
What inspired you to write your first book? – When I looked up from my first WIP
and realized I’d written over 2.7 million words in a single document. Since I
have been an avid reader since the fourth grade, I thought I might give writing
my own novel a try.įiona: When did you first consider yourself a writer? My kids
weren’t going to be babies forever, and it was a moment I found to be
introspective. – I began writing when I hit my thirtieth birthday and found
myself wondering what I wanted to be when I grew up, so to speak. – Currently,
Max and I have found a talent for collaborating, so we are focusing on our
upcoming, factual novel, The Tempest.įiona: When and why did you begin writing?

I am now in a domestic partnership with Author Max Cummings, whom I met in an
Indie writing blog. I briefly studied Interior Design at The Art Institute of
Houston, but pulled out to be a fulltime stay-at-home-mother. – I am a divorced
mother of four one son, three younger daughters. A little about your self `ie

WEREWOLF BY NIGHT BY GERRY CONWAY

Werewolf by Night (1972) #1 by Gerry Conway & Mike Ploog (Marvel Comics)

Choosing to divorce itself from the safe comfort of the MCU allows these
outsiders to shine in their own flawed, quirky glory. Loaded with references to
monster mythologies from world folklore, the special embeds Jack Russell,
Man-Thing, and Elsa Bloodstone firmly in the time-honored tradition of monster
tales retold with a modern edge. Coupled with a grandly operatic score and a
modern sense of kitsch, the result is an honorable homage to the holistic
history of horror. Lovingly recreating the look of the Universal classics, the
grainy monochrome and vignette edges give the special a delightfully retro
feel.Ĭostumes and dialects representing every era help unburden the special from
one specific moment in time, adding to the eternally timeless quality. From
James Whale to Hammer Horror to the Twilight Zone, every frame of WBN is a love
letter to the most timeworn tales of terror.

Michael Giacchino has dreamt of monster stories for 50 years.

Imagine if you could painstakingly obsess over every detail, finesse every flaw,
sculpt your clay and wield your tools with total mastery of skill, with no
restraint, until you made manifest the immaculate dream you could have only
dreamt as a child. Imagine if you had the power, resources, and talent to create
your ultimate dream project.
