MORE OPTIONSAGREE * Beverages * Restaurants * Culture * Chefs * Recipes WAITRESS WAS WORRIED TO SERVE TEXAN “COWBOY,” THEN HE WROTE A NOTE ON THE CHECK By JJ Foster - February 19, 2020 SHE COULDN’T BELIEVE WHAT HE WROTE Waitress Rosalynd Harris works two jobs in order to pay for her college tuition fees. During one busy weekend, a group of Texans walked into the restaurant she works in and instantly stuck out like a sore thumb. At first, she was nervous about serving them. However, when they left, she went over to the table and found that one of the men had written a note on the check. She couldn’t believe what she was reading… ADVERTISEMENT College Tuition Is Costly NOT YOUR AVERAGE WAITRESS There is no denying that Rosalynd Harris has a lot more to offer than just being a waitress. The 25-year-old works at Busboys and Poets in Washington, DC and knows exactly what she wants out of life. Just like the restaurant, Rosalynd is an avid supporter of social justice and stands up for what she believes in. However, when a group of Texans showed up at her restaurant, she wasn’t so sure how to handle the situation… ADVERTISEMENT Not Your Average Waitress ADVERTISEMENT THE STRUGGLE IS REAL Although she enjoys working at Busboys and Poets, for the most part, Rosalynd very much treats it like a means to an end. In fact, the young lady works two jobs just so that she can pay off her tuition fees for her college years. Rarely does she get a chance to just kick back and relax. Her high level of activity can get the better of her sometimes. So the last thing she wanted was some customer drama… ADVERTISEMENT The Struggle Is Real ADVERTISEMENT WHERE IT ALL WENT DOWN Funnily enough, the restaurant that Rosalynd works at, Busboys and Poets, was where the defining incident of this story took place. As previously mentioned, the cafe is a social justice-friendly environment, with ethnic minority role models plastered on the walls. So you could imagine how Rosalynd reacted when a bunch of Texans with red caps showed up for lunch. However, it’s not just the place that was integral Rosalynd’s story – it was the time in which it happened… ADVERTISEMENT Where It All Went Down ADVERTISEMENT FIGHTING FOR HER RIGHTS The weekend that the incident took place was during the presidential inauguration. However, this was also when the Women’s March took place. Rosalynd was one of the 500,000 women who turned up to the march to stick up for what she believed in. After the busy weekend came to an end, many visitors still hung around the city for the week that followed. This included Jason White and his friends, who had come all the way from Texas… ADVERTISEMENT Fighting For Her Rights ADVERTISEMENT STOOD OUT LIKE A SORE THUMB On that fateful lunchtime, Jason and his friends walked through the doors of Busboys and Poets. Just like that – the place went dead silent. Rosalynd was working that day and just like everyone else, stared at the group in disbelief. There were two things that she assumed about her new customers. Firstly, they were from out of town. Secondly, they had come to the country’s capital to celebrate the inauguration of the new president… ADVERTISEMENT Stood Out Like A Sore Thumb ADVERTISEMENT TRUE PATRIOT Although you should never judge a book by its cover, Rosalynd was right in her assumptions. Jason White and his friends had come all the way from Texas. Also, they were thrilled by the election results and wanted to celebrate in the country’s capital. Jason is extremely patriotic and puts his country before most things. In that respect, it made sense that he was casually walking around, wearing a red cap. However, there was so much about Jason that the waitress didn’t know… ADVERTISEMENT True Patriot ADVERTISEMENT MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE There is much more to Jason White than you might expect. The 37-year-old is a successful dentist who is a big family man and has a close-knit network of friends. When he came up to Washington, DC with some friends, they visited numerous sites such as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Arlington cemetery, to name a few. While there’s much more to Jason than just a red cap, he was simply wearing it in the wrong place… ADVERTISEMENT More Than Meets The Eye ADVERTISEMENT HATS OFF PLEASE The first thing that caught everyone’s attention was the fact that all of the friends were wearing red caps. Although Rosalynd didn’t say anything to Jason, he quietly suggested to the others that they all took their caps off, just while they were in the restaurant. “We started getting looks,” Jason said. “I told my friend, you need to take your hat off. I don’t want people to think we’re coming in here to flaunt…We’re just coming here to have lunch.” ADVERTISEMENT Hats Off Please ADVERTISEMENT FRIENDLY ENCOUNTER As Rosalynd proceeded over to Jason’s table, she gave them menus with a big smile, to which they reciprocated. Soon enough, they started cracking jokes with each other. “She started laughing when we said we were from West Texas and she said, ‘I can tell you’re from the South,'” Jason said. “I said, ‘What’s your favorite thing on the menu?’ She said the avocado panini is delicious, and I love avocado, so I got that…It was a relief for both of us.” ADVERTISEMENT Friendly Encounter ADVERTISEMENT NO PLACE QUITE LIKE IT After breaking the ice a little, Jason was curious about the restaurant’s history and calmly asked Rosalynd about it. She explained to them that it was named after poet Langston Hughes, a key figure in African-American literature. Rosalynd told The Huffington Post that the group had never experienced a place quite like it. After taking their orders, Rosalynd let the group enjoy their lunches and that was the end of the encounter. Or was it? ADVERTISEMENT No Place Quite Like It ADVERTISEMENT LOOK WHAT WE HAVE HERE Fast forward an hour later and Jason left the restaurant with his friends, having enjoyed their lunch. Naturally, Rosalynd went over to the table to clean after them, collect any tip they may have left, and set up for the next customers. However, when she arrived at the table, she noticed that the check was covered in words. It was clear that one of the friends had written a note. She picked it up and started reading… ADVERTISEMENT Look What We Have Here ADVERTISEMENT HE WROTE HER A NOTE After reading just a couple of words, Rosalynd quickly realized that it was Jason who wrote the note and it was specifically for her. The first part of the note read as follows: “We may come from different cultures and backgrounds and may also disagree on certain issues…” That alone was enough to pique the waitress’s interest and she couldn’t help but read the rest. With each sentence that Jason wrote, Rosalynd’s jaw dropped in disbelief… ADVERTISEMENT He Wrote Her A Note ADVERTISEMENT YOUR SMILE UNITED US While Rosalynd was already intrigued by what Jason had written in the first sentence of the note, it was what he wrote next that truly took her by surprise. “If everyone would share a smile and kindness like your beautiful smile, our country will come together as one people,” he wrote. “Not race. Not gender. Just American. God bless!” As if that wasn’t enough, the waitress’s life got turned upside down by what she saw at the bottom of the check… ADVERTISEMENT Your Smile United Us ADVERTISEMENT HUGE TIP! With the subtotal cost of the check coming in at $72.60, Rosalynd couldn’t believe it when she saw that Jason had left her a 625% tip, which came to $450! Usually, anything from 20% to 25% tip is a big deal for a waitress, but Rosalynd had never seen anything like this before in her life. Jason specifically gave her $450 as a nod to the 45th president, who had recently been elected. But it was why Jason gave such a generous tip that took this story to another level… ADVERTISEMENT Huge Tip! ADVERTISEMENT HE HAD AN EPIPHANY Jason recalls looking back at all of those influential figures plastered on Busboys and Poets’ walls. He also thought about how the inauguration and the Women’s March coincided with each other. As far as he was concerned, these were two examples of people expressing their American values. He started to realize how much he had in common with other people, including Rosalynd. This inspired his incredible act of kindness to the waitress, who was completely lost for words… ADVERTISEMENT He Had An Epiphany ADVERTISEMENT SHE WAS LOST FOR WORDS Both the note and the hefty tip were incredible gestures that made Rosalynd extremely emotional. However, there was no denying that the tip would go a long way in helping her get to where she wanted to be in life. Working two jobs in order to fund her college fees meant that $450 would make a huge difference. “The note was extremely touching and unexpected,” she told TODAY. “Of course the biggest part was definitely the amount of the tip he left.” ADVERTISEMENT She Was Lost For Words ADVERTISEMENT HE CHANGED HER MIND This gesture also made Rosalynd look at people differently, especially those who have very different views to her. She assumed that people like Jason were more interested in taking care of themselves, instead of others. “You automatically assume…that they have ideas about you,” she said. “But [Jason was] more embracing than even some of my more liberal friends, and there was a real authenticity in our exchange.” And it’s not just Rosalynd whose views have changed… ADVERTISEMENT He Changed Her Mind ADVERTISEMENT BROUGHT TO TEARS After doing what he did, Jason also discovered something that affected him in a deeply emotional way. “As I sat there I thought about the entire weekend and I thought I don’t know her, she doesn’t know me, but if most Americans have a preconceived perception about people then we’re never going to get better,” he said. The thought brought Jason to tears and at that moment, the dentist received a phone call he’d never forget… ADVERTISEMENT He Was Brought To Tears ADVERTISEMENT EMOTIONAL REUNION Soon enough, the story captured the imagination of millions and put both Jason and Rosalynd in the social consciousness. While she was in an interview, Rosalynd decided to surprise Jason by calling him on FaceTime. It was the first time the duo had interacted since that fateful encounter at Busboys and Poets. They finally got a chance to catch up after everything they had been through. During that conversation though, they both agreed that there was something about the story that people have misunderstood… ADVERTISEMENT Emotional Reunion ADVERTISEMENT IT’S NOT ABOUT RACE People started to interpret the story in a way that both Rosalynd and Jason didn’t agree with. “I hope that people just don’t see it as this white guy helping this black girl,” the waitress said. “This gracious gesture came from a place of compassion and love.” Jason agreed, saying the following: “It’s not about me and her…I just want people to take the example, and stop and think a little bit before they judge people – on all sides.” ADVERTISEMENT It’s Not About Race ADVERTISEMENT SIMPLE ACT OF KINDNESS Both Rosalynd and Jason believe that the true heart of this story is the unconditional love for a stranger, whoever they may be. “We have to think about being better Americans, we have to look into ourselves and how we treat one another,” he said. “If everyone did a little something to show respect…we can love one another.” At the end of that heartfelt FaceTime call, Rosalynd extended a virtual hug to Jason, to which he responded by blowing her a virtual kiss. ADVERTISEMENT Simple Act Of Kindness ADVERTISEMENT THEIR STORY AFFECTED MANY Despite becoming a viral hit, both Rosalynd and Jason didn’t post any information about it on social media. In fact, it was one of the former’s co-workers who took a photo of the receipt and put it on Twitter, to begin with. The heartfelt note comes at a time when some unhappy customers have written hateful notes to waiters and waitresses, simply because of their differences. In this case, Jason flipped the script in the best possible way. ADVERTISEMENT > We rise by lifting others. The cashier looked up and sassily suggested that Dorothy bring her own shopping bags to the supermarket, instead of using so many plastic bags. She continued that climate change was a problem that was worsened by Dorothy’s generation, which her generation now has to deal with. Dorothy, went off on a rant at this point, feeling insulted by the younger cashier’s statement. Someone recorded her speech and posted it online. It ended up going viral, and a lot of people had a lot to say about her opinions. A DAY OUT SHOPPING Her day started like many others. Being an elderly lady, ‘Dorothy’ tended to do her shopping in bulk to help save time and money. ADVERTISEMENT A Day Out Shopping Despite the fact that she was old, she had no problem loading up her shopping cart with a wide variety of goods. The idea was that the more she bought per shopping session, the less shopping she would have to do in total. For Dorothy, this was meant to be just another day at the supermarket… ADVERTISEMENT CHECKING OUT Dorothy’s shopping was going pretty well. She had visited the supermarket a number of times and had no trouble finding all the things she needed and wanted. ADVERTISEMENT Checking Out As she went from aisle to aisle around the store with her pushcart, she filled it up with a variety of things from canned foods and dried food, snacks, fruit, vegetables, meats, and personal products. As she finished her shopping run, she headed to the checkout to pay for her goods after a successful day worth of shopping. ADVERTISEMENT SO MUCH PLASTIC As Dorothy arrived at the counter, she started unpacking the goods from her trolley. Because Dorothy decided to buy in bulk, she knew that she would have a hefty load to deal with at the checkout. ADVERTISEMENT So Much Plastic As she started unpacking her goods from the trolley that became more apparent. As the cashier scanned product after product, she realized that this would probably be the biggest load she had dealt with all day. She heaved a notable sigh as she scanned through all the products. ADVERTISEMENT A CHEEKY CASHIER Looking up, the cashier asked Dorothy how many plastic bags she would need. Not sure how to answer, Dorothy started tearing bags off the roll and began packing the goods herself. After paying for her stuff, the cashier started helping Dorothy pack her groceries into the bags. ADVERTISEMENT A Cheeky Cashier While doing so, the cashier looked up to Dorothy with an irritable face and condescendingly suggested that she start bringing her own shopping bags to the store because “plastic bags are not good for the environment.” ADVERTISEMENT THE ‘GREEN THING’ Dorothy was a little taken aback. After all her years shopping at the same supermarket, no one had ever bothered her about the plastic bags that she uses. ADVERTISEMENT The ‘Green Thing’ Dorothy stopped packing the bags into her cart and took a look at the cashier who realized that Dorothy had turned her attention towards her. Dorothy remained very calm and in her politest tone said: “We didn’t have this ‘green thing’ back in my earlier days.” Dorothy then took a moment before starting again… ADVERTISEMENT GLASS BOTTLES The cashier then replied: “That’s our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment for future generations.” Dorothy carried on talking: ADVERTISEMENT Glass Bottles “Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles, and beer bottles to the store,” she said. “The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled. But we didn’t have the ‘green thing’ back in our day. ADVERTISEMENT BROWN PAPER BAGS Dorothy continued talking. “Grocery stores bagged our groceries in brown paper bags that we reused for numerous things. Most memorable besides household garbage bags was the use of brown paper bags as book covers for our school books. ADVERTISEMENT Brown Paper Bags This was to ensure that public property (the books provided for our use by the school) was not defaced by our scribblings. Then we were able to personalize our books on the brown paper bags. But, too bad we didn’t do the ‘green thing’ back then. ADVERTISEMENT A GROWING LINE As Dorothy kept talking, a line of people had started growing behind. She could tell that the cashier was more interested in carrying on with the rest of the customers who had started to gather behind Dorothy. ADVERTISEMENT A Growing Line While she could tell that most of them were anxious to pay, some of them had a look of intrigue on their faces. Dorothy’s speech had most likely struck a chord with some of the bystanders in the queue and her conversation with the cashier had become interesting. ADVERTISEMENT WALKING Dorothy continued packing her groceries into the shopping cart while she carried on talking to the cashier. “We walked up stairs because we didn’t have an escalator in every store and office building. ADVERTISEMENT Walking We walked to the grocery store and didn’t climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. But you are right. We didn’t have the ‘green thing’ in our day. Dorothy was making a pretty good point about how much ‘greener’ the older generations had lived, at least in certain regards… ADVERTISEMENT LAUNDRY Dorothy then continued with her rant. At this point, most of the customers had become quiet. “Back then we washed the baby’s diapers because we didn’t have the throw-away kind. ADVERTISEMENT Laundry We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy-gobbling machine burning up 220 volts. Wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But, young lady, you are right; we didn’t have the ‘green thing’ back in our day. ADVERTISEMENT TVS The TV has become central to the idea of the nuclear family over the years and soon after being released for the mass market back in the 50s, TV’s were in almost every home before the end of the decade. ADVERTISEMENT TV’s “Back then we had one TV, or radio, in the house – not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief, not a screen the size of the state of Montana.” That made one of the customer’s chuckle. ADVERTISEMENT MAKING HER POINT Dorothy realized that she was holding the queue somewhat, but by the looks on most of her fellow customer’s faces, it seemed as though they had started taking an interest in what she had to say. ADVERTISEMENT Making Her Point Some even had little smiles painted on their faces while the cashier simply didn’t know how to respond. There was no way to what Dorothy would say next, but she realized that she had a captive audience and that she would decide to continue to make her point. ADVERTISEMENT KITCHEN APPLIANCES Dorothy cleared her throat and continued with her speech. She moved on to kitchens this time and spoke about how things had changed over the years regarding even the simplest chores when it came to preparing food. ADVERTISEMENT Kitchen Appliances “In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn’t have electric machines to do everything for us.” Dorothy then made her point by flexing her arm lightly to show her muscles as a joke. A few people in the queue actually laughed at this. ADVERTISEMENT OLD LAWNMOWERS Dorothy continued by saying: “Back then, we didn’t fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. ADVERTISEMENT Old Lawnmowers We exercised by working so we didn’t need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But you’re right; we didn’t have the ‘green thing’ back then.” In a way, this is a much better way to stay fit, as it doesn’t feel like you’re doing traditional exercise. ADVERTISEMENT PUBLIC TRANSPORT Dorothy started packing the rest of her bags into the trolley, she started talking about public transport and personalized transport. ADVERTISEMENT Public Transport It was kind of like she was giving a modern speech on climate change! She went on to say: “Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service in the family’s $45,000 SUV or van, which cost what a whole house did before the ‘green thing.’ ADVERTISEMENT CELLPHONES Dorothy had started rounding off her speech by touching on the subject of cell phones and how the modern generation was totally hooked to an electrical form of stimulation 24/7. ADVERTISEMENT Cellphones “We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn’t need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 23,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest burger joint.” This made a few of the customers laugh again! ADVERTISEMENT DUMBFOUNDED CASHIER As Dorothy’s speech came to an end, she started pushing her cart off to let the next customer through. The speech had only really lasted around 2 minutes, but the number of points that she had made, made it feel like a lot more. ADVERTISEMENT Dumbfounded Cashier The only way she realized that she had made her point was by looking at the face of the once condescending cashier who was now flabbergasted by Dorothy’s reaction to her simple comment about using too many plastic bags. ADVERTISEMENT OVERHEARD As Dorothy finished up her speech, she pushed her trolley out of the aisle and moved on to her car. She had decided that she had done enough, made her point and was ready to move on with her life. ADVERTISEMENT Overheard However, unbeknownst to Dorothy, someone in the queue behind her had been recording her speech. As Dorothy drove home, anxious to unpack her groceries and settle down for the rest of the afternoon, she had no clue of what was about to happen next… ADVERTISEMENT SHARING HER STORY Two days later, and totally out of the blue, Dorothy’s speech had made it onto the internet. One of the people in the queue had gone out and posted her speech word for word! ADVERTISEMENT Sharing Her Story Reading it out loud probably made a lot more sense than the incident itself, but it seemed as though the people in the queue behind Dorothy weren’t the only ones who enjoyed her speech. In no time at all, the post had received over 2.2 million shares! ADVERTISEMENT PLASTIC WASTE A lot of the people who were interacting with the article were moved by Dorothy’s wise and honest opinion. ADVERTISEMENT Plastic Waste It was like hearing how things used to be reminded people of how much more effective living a simple life can be for ensuring that the environment and all of those who share it live a better quality of life. Most of the people commenting on the thread were deeply concerned about plastic waste and its effects. Dorothy’s point had struck a chord with them. ADVERTISEMENT MAKING A DIFFERENCE Dorothy’s simple and humble speech in a grocery store aisle had a much wider effect on the global community. Most of the people who had taken an interest in Dorothy’s story or shared her views, were deeply earth-conscious and the truth about a simpler way of life in the past, is something that has come back in a big way these days. ADVERTISEMENT Making A Difference Despite doing something incredibly simple, Dorothy’s speech had made a huge difference in people’s perceptions of older generations and their roll in climate change. ADVERTISEMENT RESPECT YOUR ELDERS In many ways, Dorothy’s story had hit home on a lot of fronts. First of all, she was debunking the myth that the majority of global warming issues were directly linked to previous generations. ADVERTISEMENT Respect Your Elders While we understand today that most of them had no idea of the harm their manufacturing sector(s) were having on the environment, many of the everyday things they did was less pollutant than what we deal with today. She also reminded us that it’s important to respect your elders. ADVERTISEMENT ONE COOL GRANDMA Ultimately, Dorothy had proved that being old meant you deserved a little extra credit and that her experience and point of view was worth a lot – even if we may feel it was a little out of touch with the times. ADVERTISEMENT One Cool Grandma That doesn’t discredit her opinion and in fact, is something that we as a younger generation should cherish more. She also proved that she was a no-nonsense grandma who wasn’t afraid to voice her opinion. She is one cool grandma! ADVERTISEMENT Noteabley is a food site.
