DAM CONCERNS COULD LEAD TO EVACUATIONS The heavy rain over the past week prompted a warning for one neighborhood in Rockwall County. Residents there need to be ready to evacuate if a dam fails. MCLENDON-CHISHOLM, Texas - The City of McLendon-Chisholm in Rockwall County told residents on Monday morning there is no threat of dam failure after warning residents Sunday that they may be asked to evacuate. McLendon-Chisholm Mayor Bryan McNeal said the ground near the dam has shifted six feet in about 24 hours, including three feet since 6 a.m. on Monday. The city met with the Kaufman-Van Zandt-Rockwall Soil and Water Conservation District on Monday morning and determined there is no threat of dam failure. "While there is damage, the dam is safe," said the city in a statement on Monday morning. The mayor says there is a pump in the area to try to get some of the water out of the area and a second one is on the way from Ellis County. The city says it will continue to monitor the status of the dam in the Chisholm Crossing subdivision. The city said it felt it was necessary to warn residents after recent storms and rain, but after the inspection they believe it will function. "Citizens should not be concerned," the city said. Prior to the meeting, the mayor said water is seeping through the bottom of the dam. "It is causing like an onion peel. It is going to keep peeling until it collapses," McNeal said. The city says the damage will be addressed, and they will work on repairing the damage. MCLENDON-CHISHOLM MAYOR ON DAM CONCERNS McLendon-Chisholm Mayor Bryan McNeal says a dam in the area has moved about 6 feet in 24 hours. The city is warning residents to be prepared to evacuate. The mayor said before the meeting that rain in the area on Sunday night could have led to evacuations. "Had that rain hit and we had gotten overnight rain, we had Rockwall County Sheriff's Office on deck, Rockwall County Emergency Management and McLendon-Chisholm FIre Department here. We had a gameplan we were going to start knocking doors," said McNeal. "We would have evacuated everybody to city hall." Rockwall County's Office of Emergency Management told people on Sunday night living on Fireside Drive, Parade Point, Granite Ridge Road, Highwater Crossing, Stampede Run or areas downstream on Brushy Creek to take precautions to evacuate.
