WELCOME TO THE CROC RIVER MOUNTAIN CONSERVANCY – MARA REGION

A GREEN PROJECT BY GREEN PEOPLE WITH GREEN CONSCIENCES FOR A GREEN TOMORROW

Our partnership initiative between approximately 30 landowners in a 25,000ha
area is dedicated to ensuring proper environmental management and governance.
Situated approximately 20kms east of Nelspruit, our area boasts abundant
indigenous wildlife, a wealth of biodiversity, natural splendours, and a range
of tourism attractions.

Our Conservancy was a finalist in the 2008 Lowveld Chamber of Business and
Tourism Environmental Awards, and we feature in the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks
Agency’s Mpumalanga Biodiversity Conservation Plan Handbook. The South African
National Parks Board has also recognized the area as part of the Expansion or
Consolidation Footprint for the Kruger National Park.

We offer a wide diversity of landscapes, habitats, and land uses, including
rural, agricultural, cattle and game farming, residential, tourism, and
forestry. Our area is rich in historical significance and relevance and is known
as one of the prime Pioneers of the Lowveld territories. In addition, our area
has fascinating archaeology, with stone tool workshops, rock paintings, and
spear sharpening sites.

WHAT WE HAVE THAT WE CAN BOAST ABOUT

 1. The Conservancy offers a wide diversity of landscapes (flat plains, rocky
outcrops, slopes, riverine areas), habitats and land uses (rural,
agricultural, cattle and game farming, residential, tourism and forestry),
soils, veld types and geology (a belt of fine-grained rocks of the ancient
greenstone basement, Archaean granite, gneiss with quartz, aplite and
pegmatite veins and the highly localised Mpageni Granite).
 2. Major geographical and natural attributes include the Krokodilpoortberge
Mountain Range (an extension of the Barberton Mountain lands), three major
valleys, the Crocodile River, various streams, two major road passes (the
Mpageni Pass in the west and the Bouldersberg Pass in the east) and the
    Crocodile River gorge.
 3. In excess of 400 species of trees and shrubs have been recorded and observed
    in this area.
 4. Some 250 bird species occur, making it a bird-rich area.
 5. There is a wide variety of indigenous, free roaming animals and the game
lodges have introduced further species into the area.
 6. The area is rich in historical significance and relevance and is known as
one of the prime Pioneers of the Lowveld territories.
 7. The archaeology is fascinating, with stone tool workshops, rock paintings
    and spear sharpening sites.

Our environmental activities include the operation of anti-poaching boom gates,
alien plant removal and control, anti-poaching patrols, removal of litter in
riverbeds and road verges, fire management and control, and landowner education
regarding conservation issues and applicable legislation.

We work closely with various educational institutions, including the University
of the Witwatersrand, the Organisation of Tropical Studies, and the University
of Pretoria.

Other environmental initiatives that take place in the area include the Crowned
Eagle study, the re-introduction of the Oxpeckers project and the rehabilitation
of wildlife by other organizations/bodies.

A secondary objective of the Conservancy is to develop this area into a tourism
destination, aimed at attracting both residential and day visitors who enjoy the
ambience, serenity, scenery and wealth of fauna and flora that this area offers.
