But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” Athlete Kimana Mar recited the Special Olympics oath, a quote from the late Eunice Kennedy Shriver, the founder of the Special Olympics. Kennedy Shriver said the powerful words when the first Special Olympics were held in 1968 in Chicago. Decades later, the Special Olympics has become a global movement that has changed lives and attitudes for countless athletes with intellectual disabilities. The Ontario Law Enforcement Torch Run is the largest public awareness vehicle and grassroots fundraiser for the Special Olympics. Since the event’s inception, $47 million has been raised to help cover the expenses of programming, uniforms, field rentals and costs associated with running the Special Olympics. Over the years the Torch Run has evolved and now encompasses a variety of innovative fundraising platforms including Polar Plunges, Tip-A-Cops, NHL Alumni Games, Torch Rides, Endurance Series and more. On Thursday, Oct. 12, a sea of red Torch Run shirts could be spotted as the group did a five kilometre run through Ottawa’s downtown for the Law Enforcement Torch Run Opening Ceremony. The event raised funds and awareness for the Special Olympics locally, with members from the Ottawa Police Service, the RCMP, OPP, Parliamentary Protective Service and OC Transpo special constables coming together to participate with the athletes and volunteers. “I would not have had the opportunity to be a world champion without the help of volunteers, sponsors and donors like you,” Kimana Mar said. “Special Olympics are only possible because of caring people like you. The truth is, everyone is a champion when they are involved with Special Olympics.” For more information or to make a donation, head to www.torchrunontario.com. SOCIAL SCENE | COMMUNITY BUILDERS: PURPLE TIE GALA While the Purple Tie Gala in support of Cornerstone Housing for Women is already sold out, it’s not too late to help the organization. The colourful evening of fun will be held Saturday, Oct. 14, at the National Arts Centre to raise funds and awareness for women and gender-diverse adults in Ottawa. The first women-only shelter in Ottawa, Cornerstone Housing for Women began in 1983 with three cots in the basement of All Saints Church. The organization has grown dramatically, now providing shelter to 125 women and supportive housing to 110 women across a handful of housing communities in the city. Funds raised from this year’s gala will help with the new Eccles Street supportive housing building that will provide a safe home for 46 women. Funds will also cover some of the costs associated with running the shelters, homes and programming, which is more than $1 million per year. “It has been an especially difficult time with the lack of affordable housing, funding decreases and the fentanyl crisis,” said Kate Jackson, Cornerstone’s acting executive director. “At Cornerstone we really believe that everyone deserves a home and a safe space to heal with dignity. It’s a challenging time but our community has stepped up and supported us.” Though you may have missed your opportunity for the chance to dance the night away in your most-loved purple outfit, you can still donate to Cornerstone and take part in the online auction connected to the event. For more information, head to www.cornerstonewomen.ca. If you know of someone doing something exceptional to help, we would love to share their story.
