APPLE MACBOOK PRO REVIEW 14-INCH WITH M3 MAX BACK IN BLACK

 * Celia E. Hubbard

Introduction: maximum

Quickly scary. That was Apple’s name for the event where the new MacBook Pros
and M3 chips were presented. And the device that was sent to me for review was
the most “scary” – A MacBook pro M3 Max, which is specified to such an extent
that the average bank account faints from shock. But will it be included in our
top laptop list?

How fast is the M3 Max really? And is the new Space Black MacBook Pro a event of
“ooh”or “ARGH”? And do you really need MacBook Pro to the fullest? Let’s find
out in the Stuff Apple MacBook pro 14-inch review with M3 Max.

Design: Black back cover

This Mac seems to be expensive. (Just as well, because it is so. It’s thicker
than a MacBook Air, but the curved corners and beveled edges mean it’s not
square. The hinge is stable. There is a satisfying click when the laptop is
closed-and it’s easy to open the lid with one finger.

But what about the Space Black finish that replaces the Space Gray of the M3 Pro
and M3 Max? It’s not an “inky depths of space” black–or a shade like the
old-school black Mac laptops or even this Mac’s own keyboard. It is rather a
very dark gray. I like it. I think Lego would be Batman.

The new interface isn’t just about color – Apple has done some fancy things with
the anodizing gasket to help this Mac fend off fingerprints. Does it work?
Somehow. I found the fingerprints less noticeable, but that could be due to the
darker color of the finish. However, they seemed easier to remove. But if you
are hoping for “no fingerprints”, be prepared to be disappointed. Or wear
gloves.

Screen, camera and speaker: brighten

The speakers are top-notch, so you may not need external speakers. The 120Hz
promotion screen is beautiful and offers excellent colors for everything from
image editing to tiltable movies. SDR content is a little brighter and now
reaches a maximum of 600 nits (out of 500). Not easy to recognize, but an
improvement is an improvement.

What is easy to recognize: the notch. It has two goals in life: to accommodate
the webcam and annoy people about its existence. I don’t find this intrusive:
the menu bar is located on both sides of the notch, so it does not affect the
workspace. In addition, you can hang furry cubes on the thing.

Power: power on

The basic specification of the MacBook pro with M3 Max is a 14-core CPU /
30-core GPU/36 GB of RAM / 1 TB SSD (for 3,199/ / 3,299). My review unit:
16-core CPU / 40-core GPU / 64 GB RAM / 2 TB SSD (for 4,299 / GBP 4,399). That’s
a lot of computers. And I’m sure it won’t shock you to hear how he chews
everything I threw at him.

On paper, the M3 Max looks like a bigger leap forward compared to its
predecessor than the M3 Pro. Apple estimates that it gives you up to 45%/80%
faster CPU performance than M2 Max/M1 Max and 20%/40% faster graphics
performance. My benchmarking chart carried this with numbers that compete with
high-end desktop PC chips-although the M3 Max, remember, is crammed into a
laptop. When comparing apples with apples, the numbers I received often exceeded
the publicly available statistics for the M1 Ultra (not to mention the Max),
nibbling at the heels of the m2 Ultra.

Playing time: a bit of a fan

There is another notable performance change for this 14-inch M3 Max: it has the
high-performance mode, which was previously limited to the 16-inch device. And
that made me think, because this Mac does not hesitate to turn its fans when it
is under load.

Often the Mac remains silent. If not, you will know. Just like when benchmarking
or rendering videos. (Who cares? Opt for a cup of tea!) Or when you play games.
(Ah.)

Apple’s FPS-HUD joyfully reported frame rates of up to 120 frames per second on
Baldur’s Gate 3, occasionally dipping into the 60s. Metro Exodus ranged from 80
to 160, with a strange drop to 50 – while being dialed up to high settings.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider was inevitably discontinued thanks to its convenient
built-in benchmarking tool. The numbers I have received have surpassed all the
previous Macs I have used. But half the time, the Mac felt like a hair dryer.
