Welcome Back Letter for Elementary Families

2014-15 WELCOME BACK LETTER FOR ELEMENTARY FAMILIES

Se puede leer en español más abajo.

Dear Elementary School Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to the 2014-15 school year! The start of a new school year is an
exciting time for all of us.

Great Teams in Every School
Our schools have excellent teams of principals, teachers, and staff working
together to provide the best educational environment for your child. Our schools
have the support of a dynamic team of school district leaders and staff who are
all committed to offering every student a world class education. We now have a
three year plan in place to increase direct services and support to our students
and families. As the school year gets rolling, you will be hearing more about
the goals and benefits of our new Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP).

Expanding the Toolbox
As I enter my second year as Superintendent in Berkeley, my focus will be on
ensuring we have strong systems of support for all students in every school. Our
goal is to engage every student by offering opportunities for deep connections
with caring adults. This year all of our K-6 students will benefit from a
social-emotional curriculum that promotes the use of practical tools for
learning and life (“the Toolbox“). A positive and nurturing environment is the
first step in ensuring that all of our students have access to our rich and
challenging curriculum.

Kindergarten enrollment is up
The number of young families choosing to live in Berkeley and attend our public
schools is growing. In the last six years we have seen our annual kindergarten
enrollment grow from around 600 new kindergartners a year to more than 700
across the district. The state-mandated transitional kindergarten program for
students turning five years old in the fall has also contributed to the
increasing enrollment. We want all of our new families to feel welcome. While we
have been able to rely on portable classrooms and new construction to
accommodate most enrollment growth, we are pressed to maximize the use of all
available learning spaces while keeping our commitment to reasonable class
sizes. We are looking at long-term facilities plans and enrollment projections
to plan for the years ahead.

Contracts settled with three of four employee unions; Final phase with
classified union
In the spring we settled contracts with three of our employee bargaining units
representing our teachers, our administrators, and our classified managers. As
we enter the final phase of negotiations with our fourth bargaining unit – the
Berkeley Council of Classified Employees (BCCE), the union representing our bus
drivers, instructional assistants, and other classified employees – we hope to
be able to finalize a contract in the fall that includes our best salary
increase offer.

Partners at home
Back-to-School Night (September 4) is the first of many opportunities for us to
partner with you this year. I encourage you to come out and meet your child’s
teacher(s) as well as other school staff, and begin to develop an open dialogue
that will benefit your child during the entire school year. We want to share our
grade level expectations for your child with you, as well as to give you access
to the resources and programs available to ensure your child’s academic success.

Attendance
Starting a new school year is a good time to make new resolutions. Please help
us in meeting our goals for students by arriving to school on time and making
school attendance every day a top priority.

Together we can.

Sincerely,

Donald Evans, Ed.D.

Superintendent

primera clase (“world class school district”).

administradores, y nuestros directores clasificados.

Unidos podemos.

Sinceramente,

Donald Evans, Ed.D.

Superintendente

Immunization

If your child is new to Berkeley Unified School District or starting preschool,
transitional kindergarten, kindergarten, or 7th grade, you will need to provide
your child’s school with documentation that your child has been fully immunized.
California state law (Senate Bill 277) no longer allows parents/guardians of
students to submit a personal belief exemption form for any currently required
immunizations.

Children who have not provided BUSD with documentation verifying they have
received all required immunizations prior to the first day of school will not be
allowed to attend school until all immunization records have been provided.
