Panel Discussion: Existing and new funding and financing models for smart cities
in the US
Online

The US infrastructure bill was long overdue. There has been a case for major
infrastructure reinvestment and modernization in the US for many years now. The
bill has the potential to greatly expand smart city projects across the US.
Nonetheless, city modernization and digitization is an extremely complex and
costly process, therefore a thought-out approach to federal funding and
financing is critical. This session will examine different funding and financing
models, and the best partnerships that can be formed to access federal funding
and make the best use of these resources.

City Innovation Case Study: Singapore’s transformation story : The city of
innovations
Online

Singapore is a small city state of about 5.7 million which is severely land and
resource scarce. It is barely half the size of metropolitan London and was a
nation of slum and squatters in the 1950s. Despite its constraints, this small
city state has grown to become an international, thriving modern metropolis and
is also one of the most liveable cities in Asia. Its people enjoy a clean and
green environment, are well served by highly efficient and reliable
infrastructure/services, and has one of the highest home ownership rates in the
world.

How did this transformation happen? Prof Cheong Koon Hean shares Singapore’s
transformation story and how it continues to innovate to meet its many
challenges. The city state continues to prepare for a post pandemic future and
to tackle existential challenges from climate change. The Singapore case study
is interesting as it mirrors the many challenges faced by cities all over the
world today.

Panel Discussion: The resilient digital city: Building effective safeguards
against cyber threats
Online

As the pressure for cities to digitise grows, so does the need to be resilient
against cyber-attacks. The Internet of Things (IoT) and Operational Technology
(OT) have immensely improved efficiencies in urban areas and helped to solve
multiple critical challenges such as traffic, pollution, waste management, crime
and crowding. However, the more complexity is introduced to municipal systems,
the more vulnerable they become. This session will discuss what steps city
officials need to take to better understand the threats they are exposed to, how
to secure their assets, and how to effectively respond to cyber attacks.

Panel Discussion: Managing disaster risk: How to build an effective city
resilience program
Online

From devastating climate events to a global economy shattering pandemic - if
there is anything humanity has learned over the past two years is that the
future is uncertain. Creating and nurturing a culture of preparedness and
resiliency is essential for longevity. Cities need to be proactive and seek out
opportunities to finance projects that could be critical in the event of a
devastating natural disaster. In this session, we will discuss what steps cities
need to take to plan for climate events, and how to ensure these programs
protect the most vulnerable citizens.

Panel Discussion: Decarbonizing the built environment to meet net-zero goals
Online

Buildings - because of how they are built and used - are responsible for 40 % of
global carbon emissions, making them a significant part of the problem. But can
they be part of the solution? What new solutions can be adopted to support green
project execution? What is needed from technology solutions and the financial
sector to support the electrification of buildings?

Panel Discussion: Creating policies and infrastructure to enable economic
participation
Online

Millions of people across the country choose to participate economically by
working for themselves. The contribution small and micro businesses make to
economies is significant, and their success is critical to the economic growth
and resilience of the communities in which they operate. However, due to the
lack of data and voice in prominent policy meetings, the positive impact of SMEs
often goes unnoticed. This group needs the support from cities, as much as
cities need them. This session will address what can be done to support the
infrastructure for small businesses to thrive.

Panel Discussion: How can public transit reinvent its business model and meet
the needs of the modern citizen?
Online

As citizens recover from devastating lockdowns and rush back to metro and bus
stops to make their trips to offices, restaurants and theatres, the public
transit system is at a crossroads. Often heavily subsidised, wasteful, and
poorly operated, US public transit systems must reinvent themselves to meet the
needs of modern citizens. As cities make a comeback from the pandemic slump and
the Biden administration's substantial infrastructure bill starts to take shape,
it is time to lay out a concrete vision and sound business model for public
transport in the US.

Panel Discussion: The electrification of urban mobility
Online

Climate change fueled the demand for cleaner transportation. However, the
eMobility ecosystem is only now coming of age. The electrification of mobility
can only be achieved if the government, commuters and private sector
stakeholders work together towards this common goal. The goal, which is now
becoming somewhat time-sensitive. Policymakers need to fulfil ambitious
decarbonization goals whilst meeting citizens' needs for efficient and
affordable transportation, all the while creating attractive business
opportunities for the private sector during this transition. While the
development of electric vehicles and electric mobility continues, what role does
each stakeholder need to play in order to speed up the eMobility evolution? What
more can be done to support development and infrastructure of the greener modes
of transport such as trains, buses, bikes, scooters, etc.?

Panel Discussion: How can cities become a driving force behind energy
transition?
Online

A swift and effective transition to renewable energy is essential for managing
the worst of climate change. Cities are major polluters, thus, they are a
critical part of the solution. How can cities become a driving force in
addressing climate change and driving energy transition efforts forward? This
session will discuss what city governments need to consider when building their
energy transition roadmaps and how to attract the investment needed to implement
ambitious and costly energy transition plans.

Panel Discussion: Enabling digital transition through collaboration: Connecting
city governments and innovators to develop scalable and replicable solutions
Online

The infrastructure and integration of systems are critical for cities that are
embarking on their digitization journey. There is no shortage of suppliers keen
to offer new technology and data solutions to city governments. However, the
integration of thousands of unique applications and systems designed to connect
cities has its own challenges. This session will explore the collaborative
efforts that are needed between innovators and government to  identify a city’s
technology needs, ensure greater connectivity and integration, and create models
that are scalable and future-ready.

Panel Discussion: A path to smart cities in Latin America
Online

By 2050, UN-Habitat predicts Latin America's cities will be home to 90 % of the
region's population, making it one of the most rapidly urbanizing regions in the
world. These booming new metropolises create immense opportunities for their
residents, however, keeping up the pace with a growing population comes with
growing pains. Across all urban planning sectors - from buildings to mobility -
city governments are racing to implement smart solutions that could secure
sustainable growth in urban areas. This session will discuss the growth
challenges that these cities are facing on their path to smart urbanization, and
the opportunities that exist for those that plan this process well.

Panel Discussion: Breaking silos and fighting inequality by improving social
infrastructure
Online

The global pandemic has brought into focus deep societal cracks in our
communities. Deepening inequality, polarisation and isolation are not qualities
of thriving civilizations; in fact, they make them substantially more vulnerable
in the presence of a true crisis. In this session, we will discuss how
improving public spaces and investing in assets and projects supporting social
interactions can improve the emotional and economic well-being of our
communities.

Panel Discussion: Bridging the digital divide: Are cities doing enough?

It took a global pandemic to realize how unequally skills, devices and access to
reliable and affordable connectivity are distributed across communities. In the
face of the true crisis, we came to realize that a digital economy works only
when everyone can participate, and those who can't, suffer the worst of
consequences, further deepening societal cracks in our communities. In an
increasingly digitized world, bridging the digital divide is imperative for
economic growth. What actions must governments and private sector take for the
digital divide not to become the new face of inequality? Are cities doing enough
to digitally empower all its citizens?
