The Congress’s surprise defeat is the latest manifestation of a broader
phenomenon: a shift of potentially historic significance that is underway in
Indian politics without our noticing

It was another rough week for the Congress after it contrived to lose the
Haryana assembly election that was deemed to have been in its pocket. A textbook
exercise in snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
But the post-mortem into the “hows” and “whys” of it will need to go beyond
customary hand-wringing and lamentations for a better understanding of the
message from Haryana.
