capabilities.

Top Aces

Montreal-based defense contractor Top Aces is reinforcing its position as a
leader in advanced adversary air training with the announcement of potential
upgrades to its fleet of F-16 aircraft.

As the world’s only commercial operator of the F-16 for adversary training, Top
Aces is exploring additional capabilities that promise to enhance the
performance and effectiveness of its training environment.

The F-16s operated by Top Aces are equipped with cutting-edge technologies that
set them apart in the training domain. Features like Active Electronically
Scanned Array (AESA) radar, helmet-mounted cueing systems, Link 16
communications, high off-boresight missile capability, and advanced electronic
jamming pods are standard.

These enhancements provide a realistic and challenging training atmosphere for
U.S. and allied pilots, essential for modern air combat scenarios.

AI, JAMMERS, ADVANCED MISSILES

Russ Quinn, President of Top Aces, shared insights into the future of the F-16
program.

He stated that the company is considering advanced capabilities such as
commercial electronic attack and jamming systems, high-off-boresight infrared
missile integration, and AI-controlled adversary air wingmen.

“These innovations aim to provide even more robust training scenarios for pilots
preparing to engage in high-stakes air combat,” Quinn noted.

In September 2022, Top Aces was selected under the U.S. Air Force’s Combat Air
Force Contracted Air Support program, allowing the company to provide advanced
adversary air training at key installations such as Eglin Air Force Base in
Florida and Luke Air Force Base in Arizona.

This five-year contract is expected to significantly enhance training
effectiveness for fifth-generation combat pilots, preparing them for the
complexities of modern warfare through realistic and immersive exercises.

Top Aces stands out as the sole commercial operator of F-16s and as a pioneer in
open mission system technology, facilitating rapid and flexible testing
opportunities for various defense applications.

The company’s collaboration with organizations like the Defense Advanced
Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL)
underscores its commitment to advancing U.S. military training capabilities.

Quinn emphasized the importance of their experienced team, stating, “We have a
highly skilled group of F-16 maintainers and pilots, which positions us uniquely
to meet the growing training needs for F-16 operations.”

The anticipated upgrades to their systems are designed to enrich the training
experience further, ensuring pilots emerge well-prepared for the challenges they
will face in actual combat situations.

NEW F-16 EXPERIENCE

Top Aces recently announced the integration of an advanced infrared search and
track (IRST) capability on its F-16 Advanced Aggressor Fighter (AAF) platform.

This sophisticated technology, which measures infrared radiation to detect,
track, and identify targets, will significantly elevate the training experience
for U.S. Air Force fifth-generation fighter pilots.

The IRST system incorporates Leonardo’s state-of-the-art SkyWard scanning
sensor.

This passive long-wave infrared sensor boasts a wide scanning volume for early
target detection and engagement opportunities beyond the visual range.

The integration allows Top Aces pilots to optimize their targeting capabilities
by linking advanced sensors, thus simulating real-world combat scenarios
effectively.

“This industry-first capability in adversary air training reflects our
commitment to providing the U.S. Air Force with highly capable adversaries,”
Quinn remarked.

“We believe that our F-16 AAF platform, combined with our experienced personnel,
offers the most realistic and cost-effective training solution available.”

With over 130,000 accident-free flight hours, Top Aces and its subsidiaries,
including Top Aces Corp. and Blue Air Training Corp., continue to deliver
top-tier adversary air training and joint terminal attack controller (JTAC)
training to armed forces worldwide, reinforcing their reputation as leaders in
the defense training sector.
