Bihar - CHAMPARAN. Bihar school of Yoga. GAYA
--------------------------------------------
Raj Kumar Shukla, the unknown, trouble-making, stubborn farmer from Champaran
was the one who compelled Gandhiji to launch his first civil disobedience
movement in India - the CHAMPARAN Satyagraha(1917).

The British had imposed a system called 'tinkathia'. Where the farmers were
forced to grow indigo( a water-guzzling cash crop) in three kathas of every
bigha.

It was here that Gandhiji was first called Bapu" & "Mahatma" (he never liked the
Mahatma part)

Believed to be the land of King Janak, Champaran (Forest of Magnolia) once
served as a refuge for Valmiki (author of Ramayan).

About 300 km away is Munger where you will find the globally recognised Bihar
School of . Established by Swami Satyananda Saraswati in 1963, it is the seat of
a modern yogic & tantric renaissance - a global organisation that famously shuns
publicity.

Nitish Kumar, Salman Khan’s family are frequent visitors. Would you believe
Turks & Iranians come in groups of 50-60 & stay for months at the ashram to live
a YOGIC lifestyle!

4.5 hrs from BSY is the city of Gaya - considered one of the holiest places to
perform ‘shraddh’ - the Hindu ritual one performs to pay homage to one’s dead
parents.

During Mahabharata, the place was known as Gayapuri. Myth has it that there was
a terrifying demon - Gayasura who Lord Vishnu trampled & killed. His footprints
are still present in Vishnu pad temple in Gaya!

Buddha attained Nirvana under the Bodhi tree 15 km away in Bodhgaya. The
original Bodhi tree was from 500 BCE. The current one - a direct descendent, is
from 250 BCE!

Back to Champaran - the Ahuna or Champaran Mutton - the slow-cooked meat
delicacy is a big draw with visitors!

The Makaibari Estate in Kurseong. Moonlight Tea. Tagore & Bose.
Manish Sinha
#Food  #Art, History, & Culture  #History
Kurseong(an hr from Darjeeling) was ceded to the British by the king of Sikkim
in 1835.

It was here that the FIRST Tea Factory in the world was set up in 1859 by GC
Banerjee. At MAKAIBARI—meaning ‘Field of Corn’

Makaibari is the ONLY tea garden owned by an Indian family throughout, with NO
British connections ever.

Fourth Generation, the legendary Raja Banerjee took care of the estate from the
‘70s till recently when he sold it to Luxmi Tea Company.

On an average Darjeeling Tea costs Rs. 1000/kg. But Makaibari fetches around 3K!

But wait Makaibari’s - MOONLIGHT SILVER Tip's tea-leaves are harvested between
midnight and 3am ONCE EVERY 108 YEARS on a full-moon night in June. And each ÂŁ50
12g jar makes just ten cups of tea!

800m from the Makaibari Estate is COCHRANE PLACE - a heritage boutique hotel
with a unique blend of tea, trains & tranquility.

Rainbow Rice, along with Mrs. Framjee’s Chicken Curry, are Cochrane Place’s
signature dishes.

The hotel’s restaurant is shaped like two gigantic tea kettles, snout and all.

Not very far from Kurseong is the little village of Mongpu - the summer retreat
of Tagore. He wrote his famous poem ‘JONMODIN’ here & recited it over the
telephone to AIR Calcutta!

In 1936, Netaji was put under house arrest in the Giddepahar house in Kurseong
owned by his brother Sarat Chandra Bose.

Story of MADHUBANI ART. From MITHILA (Bihar) to Japan. .
Manish Sinha
#Handicrafts  #Art, History, & Culture
Did you know that the Mithila Museum with 2K exquisite Madhubani paintings is
actually located 3 hrs from TOKYO!

It is believed that King JANAK commissioned local artists to paint murals &
decorate the town with this wall art for Sita’s wedding. Hence, the theme of
Ram-Sita wedding is hugely popular in Madhubani.

Women have transmitted the beauty, love, environmental consciousness, traditions
& faith incorporated in MADHUBANI art for generations.

In the wake of a drought(1966-68), Bhaskar Kulkarni(Dir, Handicraft Board),
requested the Mithila women to shift from house walls to paper with acrylic &
watercolours.

Sita Devi, Karpoori Devi, Godavri Dutt & Baua Devi were the first few who
accepted the challenge. And became famous throughout the world.

Madhubani art has FIVE distinctive styles: Bharni, Kachni, Tantrik, Gobar and
GODNA (tattooing)!

The philosophy of Madhubani art is based on DUALISM. Life & death, day & night,
body and soul.

The imagery represents a HOLISTIC universe. The fish is an auspicious sign for
growth & prosperity, parrot signifies love & sexuality, peacock suggests romance
& devotion.

Geometric patterns in Madhubani are inspired by TANTRIC traditions.

The much-awaited Darbhanga(Mithila) airport commenced flights in Nov 2020.

BTW Ramdhari Singh Dinkar(1908 - 1974), one of our most important modern Hindi
poets was born 150 km from Mithila!

Do you know why a school in Warsaw is named after Maharaja Jamsaheb
Digvijaysinhji Ranjitsinhji(1895-1966) of JAMNAGAR? Read on

After Russia invaded Poland(1939), a group of Poles who, having been deported to
the Gulag by the Soviets, were rescued by our Indian OSKAR SCHINDLER - the
Maharaja of Jamnagar.

He not only gave shelter to 1000 Polish women and children but also arranged
free education for the children.

He built a CAMP for them on his seaside summer estate because he wanted the
children to enjoy the pleasures of a beach.

His BALACHADI Palace(90 km from Rajkot) guest house was turned into a school. A
special library with Polish books was set up. The children played football,
volleyball, grass hockey & even went camping.

Business houses like the TATAS & others also pitched in with monetary help!

The Poles stayed in Jamnagar for 9 years till WWII lasted. Jamsaheb was fondly
called ‘BAPU’ by them. Their Polish descendants come to Jamnagar every year &
remember their ancestors.

Many roads in Warsaw and many schemes were named after him.
Between 1942-48, more than 20,000 WWII refugees stayed and transited through
undivided India for 6 mo to 6 yrs!

What Do Rudyard KIpling &. Bhoor Singh Have in common With Kanha? The land of
Mowgli, Bagheera, Baloo & Sher Khan was in and around the jungles of Kanha

Manish Sinha
#Wildlife reserve  #History
Did you know that Rudyard Kipling (1865 – 1936) wrote ‘The Jungle Book’ for his
daughter Josephine who died young. Kipling was born in Bombay in the Dean’s
bungalow of JJ School of Art. His father was the principal there!

He introduced the word ‘cushy’ derived from ‘Khushi’ to English. Also coined
‘lunchless’, ‘righto’, ‘squidgy’ & ‘stinky’.

India has a love-hate relationship with Kipling. The country was the wellspring
of Kipling’s imagination. But he was an imperialist. On the other hand, he was
the first great Indian writer in the English language.

Back to the Jungle Book. The land of Mowgli, Bagheera, Baloo & Sher Khan was in
and around the jungles of Kanha (MP). At 940 sq km Kanha’s core area is twice as
large as Bandhavgarh’s!

Home among other animals to the hard ground Barasingha (the male has 12 or more
branches on its antlers)

It’s the state animal of MP. By 1967, due to rampant hunting, habitat loss &
diseases, its numbers had reduced to just 66! Thanks to successful breeding
programs & conservation efforts, the Barasingha numbers at Kanha are closer to
1000 today!

In 2017, Kanha Tiger Reserve officially made Bhoorsingh - the Barasingha its
mascot!

#Religious site  #Art, History, & Culture
The origin of the saree goes back to the Indus valley civilization (2800-1800
BCE). The word comes from the Sanskrit ‘SATTIKA’ meaning ‘a strip of cloth’.

Kanchipuram or KANCHI (the residence of Brahma), 72 km from #Chennai - is home
to one of the most famous sarees - ‘KANJIVARAM’. Named so after the old British
name Congeevaram".

Kanchi was the capital of the Pallava dynasty from 300-900 CE. The sarees came
during the CHOLA dynasty when a large number of weavers from Saurashtra were
invited to Kanchi.

But it took 500 years for it to become a massive industry during the reign of
Krishnadevaraya (Vijayanagar Empire)

Kanjeevaram sarees are prepared from pure raw silk sourced from Karnataka with
heavy use of ZARI from Surat.

Only about 15 inches can be woven in a day; it takes 15 to 20 days to weave a
whole saree. And the design is hardly ever repeated!

In 2005 Kanjivaram Silk got the GI TAG. The city is home to the Kanchi Mutt
founded in 509 BCE by Adi Shankaracharya!

9 km away there is a beautiful Hanuman temple town - Ayyangarkulam. It is
believed that fragments of the Sanjeevi mountain fell at this place.

Puducherry is 2.5 hrs away!

By the way, WAHEEDA REHMAN was born in Chengalpattu - 40 km from Kanchi!

Tucked away in the dusty town of SARDHANA (19 km from Meerut), 2 hrs from Delhi,
is the LARGEST church in North India - ‘Our Lady of Graces’. A tribute to an
amazing woman - Begum Samru.

Sardhana is famous for its cloth & timber industries.

The principality of Sardhana was awarded to Walter R. Samru, an Austrian
mercenary for saving the Mughal emperor Shah Alam II in the battle of Barsana in
1774.

Sumru maintained a trained, disciplined standing army enjoying the trappings of
a Raja. He got this beautiful Kashmiri nautch girl from CHANDNI CHOWK for his
harem - later his Begum Samru.

Begum converted to Catholicism in 1781 after Walter’s death & took the name
Joanna after JOAN OF ARC - before becoming the fiercest fighter of her era!

She saved Shah Alam’s life twice earning the title Farzand-e-Azizi (beloved
daughter) which became Farzana.

Administering Sardhana with brilliance she generated a huge income.

Our Lady of Graces (declared a minor Basilica) was completed in 1820 at a
princely 4 lacs!. It bears resemblance to St. Peter’s Basilica (Rome)

Karwar Town came later. Built in 1857 after the First War of Independence.

In 1882, a young Rabindranath gets drawn to a tranquil corner of the Karwar
beach, now named after him. He was visiting his elder brother Satyendranath -
the district judge of Karwar.

The beauty of the Karwar beach roused the philosopher in junior TAGORE! He
penned his first verse drama Prakritir Pratisodh (the Revenge of Nature) here.

Karwar is easier to reach from GOA (under 2 hrs from Margao) than from Bengaluru
(10 hrs). The beach is known for its sunset. Enjoy a boat ride into the sea or
check out the waves on a water scooter.

On this beach rests the famous Russian made missile ship, INS CHAPAL - the
valiant hero of the 1971 war. Now a ship museum. In total INS Chapal crew were
awarded 8 Veer Chakras for their gallantry!

About 4 hrs drive from Bengaluru is the beautiful hill station of Sakleshpur in
the lush Western Ghats of Karnataka.

While this is a popular weekend getaway, it is also home to a unique,
18th-century fort built by Tipu Sultan(1750-1799).

In 1792, Tipu was establishing his sovereignty over Mysore at a time when the
Marathas & the Nizam of Hyderabad had aligned with the British.

Tipu wanted to secure the highway between the port city of Mangalore &
resource-rich-Coorg. So, he sought the help of French engineers to build this
8-point, STAR SHAPED FORT in a European style.

Enveloped in FOG, Tipu named it MANJARABAD fort. MANJARA - a version of 'manju'
meaning fog or mist" in Kannada.

It is said that on a clear day, you can see the ARABIAN sea - 130 km away!

Did you know that Tipu’s army was the FIRST in the world to use ROCKETS in the
Anglo-Mysore wars?

100 km from this fort are BABA BUDANGIRI Hills. Named after a Sufi saint from
Karnataka, said to have smuggled SEVEN seeds of COFFEE in his tunic while on a
pilgrimage to Mecca.

On his return, he planted the beans on the slopes of the Chandragiri Hills in
Chikmagalur, later named after him. This is how COFFEE came to India from

Andamans. KAALA PANI. And ARCHIBALD BLAIR

Andaman forests contain more than 200 timber-producing tree species. The
RUDRAKSHA & aromatic dhoop-resin trees are also found here.

This beautiful paradise - part of the CHOLA empire (1014-1042 AD) was turned
into a living hell when the British began their first penal settlement here(
1789)

The 3-storied CELLULAR JAIL with 693 cells was completed in 1906. Like bicycle
spokes, seven wings radiated from the main watchtower that had a bell to raise
an alarm if any prisoner tried to escape.

It was after 1857 that the British started using the Andamans as a colonial
PRISON for freedom fighters!

The solitary confinement was such that SAVARKAR brothers Babarao & Vinayak
Damodar didn’t know about each other for two years though they were in the same
jail!

MAHAVIR SINGH, an associate of Bhagat Singh - died while on a hunger strike. He
was tied to a stone & thrown into the sea. Little wonder it was called ‘KAALA
PANI’

Today, the Taj Exotica villas - 65 km away - stand inspired by the JARAWA tribe
dwellings.

The Coco & Preparis Islands in north Andamans belong to MYANMAR!

By the way, PORT BLAIR got its name from Lt. Archibald Blair - the British
surveyor whose voyage (1788) in ships Elizabeth & Viper led to the Andamans
becoming a colony!

Manipur today is synonymous with its boxing legend - Mary Kom!
6 times winner of World Amateur Boxing Championship.

But did you know that Manipur is the birthplace of modern POLO?

Sometime in the 1850s, a group of East India Company soldiers along with tea
planters while travelling to Silchar came across Manipuri princes playing a
hockey-like game on HORSEBACK.

Men in turbans, pheijom (dhoti), shin guards wheeling mallots, facing off on the
sturdy & small Manipuri pony.

The Brits were entranced. In 1853 Sherer & Stewart set up the world's first Polo
club, the Silchar Kangjei club. By 1869, the first match was being played in
London.

But the oldest polo ground in the world is the IMPHAL Polo Ground. Its history
archived in the Manipur royal chronicle since 33 AD!!!

Manipur also has about two dozen WOMEN professional Polo players. Huntre Equine
- a social enterprise that builds on the links between sports & culture has
brought international attention to Manipuri women players!

Watch the award-winning film - Daughters of the Polo God by ROOPA BARUA.

The Manipuri pony is amongst the 5 indigenous horse breeds - others being
Marwari, Kathiawari, Zanskari & Spiti.

Under threat, in 2014 there were only 600 left. A sanctuary is being set up at
Heingang(Imphal) to preserve the breed.

BTW in 1930, when Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II of Jaipur married the princess of
Jodhpur, he asked for the Jodhpur Polo team as part of the dowry!!

The Tale of Samosa. World’s First Fast Food

Did you know that our very own samosa has global origins?

Originally named Samsa, after the pyramids in Central Asia, it morphed into
Sanbusak!!

Then it was half-moon shaped, contained meat, onions, dry fruits & deep-fried.
‘Frying’ was discovered in Egypt in 2500 BC.

The Sambusa was the traveller's snack. It arrived in India around 13c via the
mountains of AFGHANISTAN.

There is a mention of samosa as the second course in the royal menu by Amir
Khusro - royal poet of Delhi Sultanate.

IBN BATUTA, the Moroccan traveller also mentions a triangular pastry with peas,
pistachios, meat & other fillings in Mohd bin Tughlak’s palace.

But surprise, there was no ‘potato’! For that, it had to wait till early 17c
when the Portuguese brought potatoes to India.

By the 19c, the current avatar of samosa had begun to take its place in Indian
kitchens, restaurants & streets.

Finally, the POTATO was paired with samosa - with cumin seeds, asafoetida,
coriander seeds, dried mango powder, ginger, chillies & garam masala. And the
triangular shape replaced the semicircle.

The popular Punjabi samosa has potatoes, peas, PANEER, & dry fruits.

The east Indian & Nepalese variant is ‘Singhara’ filled with veggies or
meat/fish. In Gujarat, the filling is replaced with cabbage and is called Patti
samosa.

Bengal has a sweet version called Lavang Latika - little pastries dipped in
sugar syrup and packed with mewa!

Samosa Singh is a growing chain of restaurants and has branches all over
Hyderabad and Bangalore. It also has Chocolate Samosa!

By the way, Teachers Day and Samosa Day both fall on Sep 5!!!

The Story of the Charminar and how the city of Hyderabad was birthed. From being
a monument to signify the end of the plague, to being a memorial to BAGHMATI -
the legendary romantic muse of Quli Shah, Charminar has many stories..
Manish Sinha

The LION City - DIAMONDS, BIRYANI, CIGARETTES
--------------------------------------
Built-in 1592 by Mohd. Quli Qutub Shah, today the ‘CHARMINAR’ is the official
emblem of the Telangana government.

Hyderabad was planned around this 400-year-old monument - the city's FIRST
building!

Following the decline of the Bahmani Empire, the Iranian Qutub Shahis had made
GOLCONDA (11 km away) their capital.

The Golconda DIAMONDS & the Andhra textiles had made Golconda one of the RICHEST
kingdoms in the world during that time.

Shah wanted to build a city on the lines of ISFAHAN in Iran. He gave the job to
his talented Peshwa, MIR MOMIN ASTRABADI - Iranian migrant, great architect,
lover of culture, poet!

And the man claimed to have helped develop the HYDERABADI Biryani!

From being a monument to signify the end of the plague, to being a memorial to
BAGHMATI - the legendary romantic muse of Quli Shah, Charminar has many stories.

But most city historians now agree that it was more a glorified ‘City Square’
that marked the epicentre of the new city.

It is said that the iconic LAAD BAZAAR (400m away) was set up by the Shah to
provide bridal trousseau for his daughter's wedding.

By the way, the lion's head carved on the monument is a tribute to Hazrat Ali,
the Prophet's son-in-law - also known as HYDER (Lion). That’s how the city got
its name.

Charminar is surrounded by authentic biryani serving restaurants. It is said the
royal chefs could prepare over 50 types of BIRYANI using shrimp, quail, fish,
DEER, hare & saffron-infused rice.

A speciality was the delicate ‘DOODH KI BIRYANI’ cooked with creamy milk,
roasted nuts & aromatic spices.

Hyderabad might be the only city to have two iconic cigarette brands - Charminar
& Golconda!

Rumour has it that there is an underground unknown tunnel that connects the
Charminar to Golconda fort.

Jharkhand. Archery. Jagannath Temple & Mrigayaa
----------------------------------------------------
On Monday, India’s ace archer - Deepika Kumari from Jharkhand, regained the #1
position in Global Rankings for recurve women following her Hat-trick of Gold
Medals at the World Cup in Paris.

Jharkhand is today synonymous with ARCHERY. It is said that Adivasi children are
born with a bow and arrow.

Women, in fact, have a special place in hunting in Jharkhand. JANI SHIKAR (means
‘women’s hunt’ in Sadri language) is a once-in-12-years Adivasi festival where
women dress up as men and HUNT.

The festival is a commemoration of a famous battle where women from the ORAON
(Kurukh) tribe valiantly fought & protected their community from an invading
army, not once but twice.

No wonder, this state is producing world-class WOMEN ARCHERS!

Did you know that capital RANCHI has a Jaganath temple essentially linked with
tribal culture & has a 329 year old Rath Yatra tradition (similar to Puri).

Local ruler Aini Nath Shahdeo could not make it to PURI for the Jagannath
festival. In his dream, the Lord instructed him to build a temple in Ranchi,
which he did in 1690.

The fair started the following year. Tribals who were in a majority have
patronized the mela ever since.

The picturesque MOTI JHARNA waterfall originates from Rajmahal Hills in the
area. In fact, the holy Ganges too flows through Rajmahal hills, ideal for boat
trips!

This is also the site of The Santhal Revolt of 1855 - beautifully portrayed in
Mrinal Sen’s MRIGAYAA (The Royal Hunt, 1976). It marked Mithun da’s cinematic
debut.

Back to Deepika Kumari - she will be the only Indian woman archer representing
the country at the Tokyo Olympics next month.
