A senior Network Rail engineer has exclusively told MailOnline that passengers
were left as sitting ducks on a partly derailed train for seven minutes before
being hit by another intercity service after a 'major' flaw occurred in the
signalling system. The employee, who has worked for the rail operator for over
10 years, said that the signalling system should've made the train stop but that
it suffered a catastrophic failure which led to the crash. Rail workers last
night demanded to know how the second train wasn't stopped by red signals before
the carnage unfolded close to Salisbury station. The GWR train travelling from
Portsmouth Harbour to Bristol Temple Meads hit an object as it went through
Fisherton tunnel and caused the rear carriage to derail (inset, map of the
incident). But the engineer claimed that a major flaw in the signalling system
meant a South Western Railway train coming from London Waterloo towards Honiton
was not stopped from entering the site of the derailment. Seventeen passengers
were injured in the collision and a newborn baby had to be pulled from the
wreckage. The driver of the derailed GWR train also had to be freed from his
cabin before being taken to hospital. The incident, one of the most serious in
recent years, is set to be investigated by the Office for Rail and Road and the
Rail Accident Investigations Branch.

Johnson warned world leaders their promises on tackling climate change are
starting to 'sound hollow' as he read them the riot act ahead of the COP26
summit. The Prime Minister said there are 'no compelling excuses for our
procrastination' on reducing harmful emissions and that the action already taken
amounts to 'drops in a rapidly warming ocean'. Speaking at the G20 summit in
Rome, he said that only 12 of the club's members have committed to reaching a
target of net zero emissions by 2050 or earlier.

better of us' as they told stranded passengers at London Euston, the worst-hit
station, to give up, go home and hope the situation improves overnight. The
railway company said they were 'truly sorry' for the disruption which came at
the worst possible time for people trying to reach the COP26 summit venue ahead
of its opening today. Journalists and academics were among the thwarted
passengers who took to Twitter to complain. Some pointed out signage at Euston
that trumpeted the rail network's green credentials - saying 'Thank you for
travelling to COP by train.' A spokesman for Network Rail, Chris Halpin, said
last night: 'I'm afraid there are still major delays on the West Coast main line

Registrations for the Cop26 climate summit in Glasgow reached 38,895 people
tonight as the conference kicked off with the general message that doom and
gloom awaits unless we act quickly. In every meeting room, café, exhibition hall

cliff and, if something substantial does not come out of this summit, then over
the edge we go. Step outside this fortress complex of steel, glass and
gale-thwacked marquees on the banks of the Clyde and you encounter an equally
apocalyptic prognosis from the massed ranks of environmental action groups,
charities and lobbyists. They have been allocated a parallel summit site on the
other side of the river. Called the Green Zone, it opens this morning with
thousands of activists from hundreds of organisations all preaching furiously to
the converted. You have to wonder why they are bothering since absolutely no one
here disagrees with the core message anyway. The view is unanimous: we're

Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos were slammed as hypocrites for lecturing the world on
the need to combat climate change by reducing carbon footprint while at the same
time reportedly vacationing on superyachts off the coast of Turkey.
Multi-billionaire and Microsoft founder Gates celebrated his 66th birthday in
Turkey in the company of fellow tycoon and Amazon founder Bezos on Friday. Bezos
was among the 50 guests invited to Gates' private party beside the
Mediterranean. It's not clear whether any of Gates' family helped him celebrate
at his exclusive bash. According to reports, Bezos traveled to Gates' superyacht
by helicopter. The Blue Origin founder is said to have made the 120-mile round
trip journey by chopper from Govoka to the resort town of Fethiye. The jet fuel
used to power helicopters emits 21.095 pounds of carbon dioxide per gallon
burned. Since helicopters use up approximately 10.75 miles per gallon, Bezos'
helicopter emitted some 215 pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Both
Bezos and Gates are reportedly staying on superyachts - each of which emits
7,020 tons of carbon dioxide per year, or 19 tons per day.

A man who was dressed as Batman villain the Joker told police he wanted to be
executed when they arrested him for attempted murder after he injured 17 people
in a knife rampage onboard a Tokyo commuter train. Witnesses described how the

oil around the carriage before lighting it on fire, causing panic among
passengers. It was also reported hydrochloric acid was thrown during the attack,

RUN FOR COVER ON LONDON STREETS
Terrified pedestrians and motorists were left watching in horror as a group of
thugs fired explosives across a high street in Stamford Hill, north London, at
around 10.30pm last night. Elsewhere scores of people were seen running for
cover as fireworks were also blasted along a street in Woolwich, south east
London. Police officers were later seen chasing after groups of people after the
street in Woolwich was left shrouded in smoke. The scenes come more than a year
after Police Federation chair John Apter called for an urgent review into the
sale of fireworks amid a spate of attacks across the UK.

COSTING THOUSANDS, BUT EXPERTS ARE BURSTING THEIR BUBBLE BY WARNING OF THE RISK
TO WILDLIFE AND THE ENVIRONMENT
Poorly disposed of balloons are a terrible polluter, responsible for killing
animals that ingest or become trapped in them, but 'balloon arches' have become
a worrying trend among the rich and famous. Celebrities from Millie Mackintosh
and Miley Cyrus to footballers Rio Ferdinand and Harry Kane are all in on the
trend. But a 2019 study showed that balloons are the plastic debris that is most
likely to kill seabirds. Of thousands of birds inspected, the leading cause of
death was blockage of the gastrointestinal tract by soft plastics such as
balloons. Meanwhile, the helium used to inflate floating balloons is desperately
needed in healthcare and technology. In a time when most are becoming aware of
how we all need to lighten our impact on the environment and create less waste,
it is alarming how balloons are still being used by businesses and social media
influencers.
