This course analyses the relationship between internet use and mental health problems in children and young people. It discusses the associated risks, alongside the positive benefits of internet use. As you progress, the course deals with assessing and treating young people's mental health concerns. It is important to understand that mental health problems in young people are idiosyncratic in nature, so they need to be treated in a way that is helpful to them personally. There is no “one size fits all”. You will also learn the importance of outcome monitoring and receiving feedback from the child or young person on the care they’ve received. Half of mental health problems start before the age of 14. Schools are in a vital position to prevent mental health problems, reduce stigma and employ policies to prevent bullying and discrimination. You’ll learn about the many ways schools can support children and young people experiencing mental health problems. In addition to this, you’ll look at the benefits of peer support in schools and school-based counselling.
