Qualifying Speed Spelling Bee rounds are determined by the speller correctly
identifying the correct spelling of the word after being given the definition.
The speller will have between 4 and 8 seconds (depending on the age and round)
to select the answer in a list (via an online quiz tool). At the end of each
round, the judges will tabulate the results by each speller. At the end of each
round, there will be a cut-off score determined by the judges for the speller to
advance to the next round. All spellers who make the cut-off score will be
notified within 8 hours if they qualified for the subsequent round. Testing
Mom Spelling Bee judges make the final decision as to whether a speller makes it
to the next round or not. Depending on how many spellers make the cut-off score,
the spellers may be required to complete 2 rounds prior to the final round. The
final round will consist of 10 spellers (for each age group).

Privacy and Permissions for Finals (Top 10 spellers) Testing Mom will be
recording speller's (and others in the room) movements and actions on the
computer screen during the finals for the Testing Mom Spelling Bee. By
registering for the competition, spellers give Testing Mom permission to record
speller at Testing Mom Speed Spelling Bee Finals. Testing Mom may use the
recorded material in preparing promotional videos along with the first name,
grade, school name/state for all Top 10 finalists.

Study Materials

There are no study materials provided for this spelling bee competition. It will
be a series of commonly misspelled words and more complex words as the
competition progresses. There is NO word list available.

Set-up for Finals (Top 10 spellers)

Using traditional spelling bee rules, the final top 10 spellers for each age
group will be eliminated should they spell a word incorrectly. The last speller
who has not misspelled any words will be our first champion. The speller cannot
start over once they begin spelling a word or the speller will be immediately
disqualified.

For the final round, the top 10 spellers must have a computer (not a phone or
not a tablet) with a microphone and webcam. Any top 10 spellers without access
to a computer with a microphone or webcam are not allowed to participate.

The entire spelling bee competition will be held online. The finals are
Thursday, December 30th, 2021 at 6pm ET for juniors (ages 6 to 8) and 7:30pm ET
for seniors (ages 9 to 13)

During all rounds of competition, spellers must not seek help from other people
(parents, family, friends), any devices ( phone, computer, dictionary), any
website/software (online dictionary) or books (dictionary) or anything that
helps the speller.

During the final round of competition), spellers are required to be in front of
a webcam (NO masks allowed), and their physical movements as well as operations
on the computer screen will be continuously recorded and monitored. Spellers
should adjust their webcam position such that Testing Mom Spelling Bee judges
can see the speller and surroundings. Spellers should not mute themselves at any
time, but the judges may choose to mute all spellers at their discretion.
Spellers should remain as silent as possible when they are unmuted in order to
avoid disrupting other spellers and the competition.

For all rounds, the speller should be alone in a room with no one else in the
room. If parents/family/friends are in the room they should be behind the
speller and judges should be able to see parent(s) all the time. Parents and
siblings should not help speller in any way and if they do, speller will be
disqualified from the Testing Mom Spelling Bee and the child’s school will be
immediately notified.

Spellers should not seek any unfair competitive advantage (i.e. cheating) by any
other means. As a general rule, if something is not allowed during a
regular spelling bee it is not allowed in this online competition. This
competition is an honor system and we rely on the integrity of spellers to
uphold the fairness of the competition.

Appeals and Judges Roles

All judge's decisions are final. Depending on the circumstances of the
competition, judges reserve the right to change the rules of the competition.
Judges will do their best to preserve the integrity and fairness of the
competition and keep the competition fun and fair for all!
