This bestseller (pictured left) addresses State-of-the-Art Nutrition for Building Lean Body Mass. Although the book is aimed toward competitive bodybuilders, striving to achieve maximum definition for a show, it is also exceptionally relevant to all individuals who are seeking to reduce their body-fat levels and improve their health. In a sport where nutrition represents 50 percent of the formula for success, rising to 90 percent during those crucial weeks just prior to competition, bodybuilders (from beginners to seasoned professionals) look to the latest nutrition strategies to gain the winning edge. Sliced presents up-to-date, proven diet programs and scientific data for achieving maximum muscularity and superior definition. Bill Reynolds, bestselling author and editor-in-chief of Joe Weider’s Flex magazine, has teamed up with Negrita Jayde, former Canadian Overall National Champion, to give readers detailed and authoritative guidelines on nutrition for bodybuilders. Topics include the role of nutrition in hyping the immune system and improving between-workouts recovery, the seven degrees of muscularity from basic off-season shape to super-ripped, tips for increasing the basal metabolic rate and thus burning off excess body-fat, as well as a thorough discussion of metabolic optimizers and food supplements. In addition to more than 130 recipes and a variety of meal plans, this encyclopedic book offers Jayde’s personal nutrition-training program for attaining peak muscularity. Now that drug testing is standard in competition, bodybuilders will particularly value the chapter on ergogenics (achieving an anabolic effect naturally) …all in all making Sliced state-of-the-art in every detail. Tortora and Nicholas P. Anagnostakos. This tome is available in both soft and hardcover. Here we will be reviewing the 11th edition (pictured left). I first discovered this superbly written book in 1992. At that time it was in 6th edition. Since that point, it has formed the cornerstone of my teaching and features prominently in subsequent lectures and seminars I hold. Although I have read and own many books covering anatomy and physiology, I feel that Principles of Anatomy and Physiology succeeds in conveying what may otherwise seem complex biology. For example, open the book randomly at any chapter or page and there you will notice parenthesized text. Throughout the text, phonetic pronunciations are provided in parentheses for selected anatomical and physiological terms. These pronunciations are given at the point where the terms are introduced and are repeated in the Glossary of Terms. One example of this is deoxyribonucleic acid(DNA), which is displayed in parentheses like this: (dē-ok’-sē-rī’bō-noo-KLĒ-ik)acid. Both the quantity and quality of the illustrations, line-art and diagrams within this book are excellent and greatly improve the understanding of how parts of the body are put together, then how they work. The authors have maintained in the text the superb balance between structure and function and continue to emphasize the correlations between normal physiology and pathophysiology, normal anatomy and pathology, and homeostasis and homeostatic imbalances. The acclaimed illustration program is now even better thanks to the input of hundreds of professors and students and the re–development of many of the figures depicting the toughest topics for students to grasp. The eleventh edition now fully integrates this exceptional text with a host of innovative electronic media, setting the standard once again for a rewarding and successful classroom experience for both students and instructors. This is a fantastic book, and an excellent source of information. Whether you are a health professional, student or personal trainer, i believe you’ll will find this book unsurpassable in its ability to easily convey otherwise complex biology. My own opinion is that this publication is The Rolls-Royce of Anatomy and Physiology textbooks.
