Thank you for your support in pushing California to pass SB 357, which would repeal the law that criminalizes “loitering with the intent to commit prostitution.” The bill has passed from appropriations onto the Assembly floor with the provision that helps people clear their records intact! Now we just need a few more votes from the California Assembly to pass and head to the Governor’s desk to be signed into law. SB 357 will repeal current California law that has allowed for targeted, discriminatory policing of communities of color and enable people who have been convicted using this subjective law to clear their names. The overbroad interpretation and enforcement of this law has led to discriminatory stops and disproportionate arrest rates of already targeted communities for loitering with the intent to commit prostitution. SB 357 will move California one step closer to acknowledging sex workers as deserving of full dignity and respect. This bill is authored by Senator Scott Wiener, co-sponsored by the Positive Women’s Network – USA, St. James Infirmary, SWOP LA, TransLatin@ Coalition, Asian Pacific Islander Legal Outreach, Equality California and ACLU California Action and led by a coalition of transgender women of color and sex workers. Please help us by encouraging people to call/message their California Assemblymember and ask them to support SB 357! We’ve put together a toolkit that you can use to easily create Social Media posts, or forward to your supporters. Send a message using our action alert!
