Workshop - Managing Lab Safety and Risk: Challenges, Techniques, Strategies, and
Solutions

Risks and safety are challenging to manage, especially in labs. The interweaving
of highly technical risks with human experiential feelings can make for complex
dynamics. This workshop will help attendees address and overcome these
challenges.

Four key learnings include:

 * Developing and nurturing a culture of safety (e.g., effective safety leaders,
   psychological safety, communicating, training, and key metrics)
 * Managing the many technical safety and risk areas (e.g., biosafety, chemical
   hygiene, life safety codes, physical hazards, and radiation safety)
 * Risk assessing, mitigating, and communicating (e.g., risk and judgment under
   uncertainty, the hierarchy of controls, tracking systems, and what records to
   create and maintain)
 * Working with your facility and environment (e.g., prevention-through-design,
   ergonomics, facilities issues, design and renovations, relating to neighbors,
   and managing media)

The speaker and attendees will dive into each of these themes together.
Attendees will also be grouped in teams to work through case scenarios and
problem-solve. Come prepared to be engaged in detailed learning, risk-based
conversations, and challenging problem-solving on the above four areas.

Workshop - Ensuring Success from the Start: Effective Hiring, Onboarding, and
Development

People are the most important investment and assets in any lab. Developing an
effective process to evaluate candidates and bring the right people into the lab
is crucial. After the new hires start, lab managers need to have the tools and
knowledge to onboard, train, and develop them to be effective in the lab. Using
real-life examples from the lab, this workshop will cover the main aspects of
hiring, onboarding, development, and goal setting:

 * Setting criteria for hiring
 * Effective interviewing
 * Onboarding plans
 * Setting initial objectives
 * Building development plans
 * Tools for training and cross-training
 * Setting SMART annual objectives
 * Addressing inadequate performance

The workshop will cover why developing these processes and tools is so important
to staff performance and retention, how to execute each step with confidence,
and provide examples to work through and discuss.

Time will be available to address questions and talk through specific situations
as a group.

Roundtable: Advocating for Investments

Convincing upper management about the need for a new investment can be a
challenging task. It requires the lab manager to present a business case for why
this new expense is necessary, how it will improve operations, and how quickly a
return on the investment can be made.

During this roundtable discussion, moderated by Lab Manager staff, attendees are
encouraged to ask and answer questions about how to successfully advocate for
equipment and other investments. Attendees will learn strategies to present an
effective and persuading case for needing the investment and how to win over key
stakeholders.

Roundtable: Convincing Staff to Adopt New Technologies

Implementing new technology and instruments into the lab can help improve
overall efficiency and enable new capabilities. It is important that everyone in
the lab adopts the new way of working to get the most out of the new investment.
But despite the benefits, some staff may resist the change.

During this roundtable discussion, moderated by Lab Manager staff, attendees are
encouraged to share tips and advice on what has worked well for them in this
scenario and have an open discussion on the challenges of doing so.

Roundtable: Managing Difficult Situations

Lab leaders are tasked with managing a variety of personality types,
uncomfortable conversations, and complex decisions. Lab staff rely on the
manager to resolve any concerns and make the right choices.

During this roundtable discussion, attendees have the opportunity to learn from
each other about how to handle a variety of difficult scenarios. Lab Manager
moderators welcome attendees to share examples from their labs and ask for
guidance on how to better manage similar situations in the future. At the
conclusion of the roundtable, attendees will be equipped with new tools to
enhance their communication and people leadership skills.

Roundtable: Tips to Hold Staff Accountable & Boost Team Performance

Lab managers are required to set specific expectations for the performance and
outcomes of the lab. But what happens when the lab staff isn’t meeting these
expectations and performance is suffering?

During this roundtable discussion, Lab Manager moderators will kickstart the
open discussion by posing questions to the group. Attendees are encouraged to
share their experiences with handling poor performers and seek insight from
others on how they successfully overcame these hurdles.
