Life began In 1990, when the Greenall family excavated their first lake. By 1992, the venue was opened to the public with a focus on fly fishing. The year 1997 marked another milestone as two additional lakes were dug, creating what are now known to be the Specimen and Match Lakes. As the years progressed, Trout Fishing was discontinued in 2005 when instead, the fishery focused on Carp and Coarse fishing. In 2006, the original Trout Lake underwent a transformation, splitting it into two distinct bodies of water: the Carp Lake and the Silver Lake, each tailored to provide unique fishing experiences. Fast forward to 2022, Sam Greenall joined his father Peter, in partnership at the fishery, where the next significant chapter started to unfold with substantial investments pouring into the lakes. This endeavour included the meticulous removal of aging fish populations and the introduction of new, vibrant stocks, ensuring the lakes continue to thrive and captivate anglers for years to come. Additionally, the Silver fish lake got converted into the predator lake, where a significant stock of Catfish, Pike and perch were introduced. Specimen Carp Lake This winter, we undertook an extensive netting program to transfer our larger fish into our newly developed Specimen Lake. With significant investment in new stock and a dedicated feeding program, this lake is set to become a standout destination in the big Carp scene with carp already going to the 37lb Mark. The lake features depths ranging from a deepest point of 8ft to an average of 6ft, with the shallow end at 5ft. Spanning 2.75 acres, it boasts far and near margins, all accessible from the same bank. Walk around to the far bank to bait up, taking advantage of the clay bottom with a few gravel spots and no silt. Successful catches are often reported with solid bags with wafters being the proven method, along with adjustable zigs and bottom baits. The best baits include white pop-up hook baits, and Munch baits, as the fish are regularly fed on these, while pellets have also shown great results. Our bailiff's top tip: don’t ignore your close margin! Carp Lake The Carp Lake is now exclusively stocked with Carp—plenty of Carp! By carefully managing the fish population and removing any old or damaged specimens, we've ensured a healthy and thriving community. This lake is a haven for anglers, offering excellent sport for those willing to put in the effort (and the bait!). This lake is perfect if you are after a good days sport, or simply trying to get confidence in your rigs and tactics, before taking on the specimen lake. The lake reaches a depth of 14 feet at its deepest point, with an average depth of 10 feet and shallower areas along the margins. Covering 2.5 acres, its bottom is predominantly clay with scattered gravel patches and minimal silt. Successful tactics mirror those used on the specimen lake, including solid bags and zig fishing. The Carp here eagerly devour Munch baits and pellets, often resulting in multiple fish once they start feeding. Predator Pike, Perch & Catfish Lake Excitement is building around our newest addition—the Catfish Lake, poised to create unforgettable fishing experiences and expand our fishery's offerings. We're excited to announce that we've obtained a Catfish licence from the EA and stocked the lake with Catfish weighing up to an impressive 85lb! Alongside Catfish, we've introduced Pike and Perch, ensuring a year-round predator fishing experience. The lake boasts depths ranging from 14ft at its deepest point to an average of 10ft, with shallower areas along the margins. Spanning 2.5 acres, it features both far and near margins, a clay bottom with scattered gravel spots, and no silt. Proven tactics for Catfish include using silver fish imitations and dead bait exclusively. Anglers have found success with baits such as squid, mackerel, and large halibut pellets. Popping baits up off the bottom has been particularly effective. For Catfish, use big single hooks, while wire trace trebles are recommended for Pike. This lake promises thrilling angling experiences and is set to become a standout feature of our fishery. Match Lake While the name remains unchanged, our Match lake has undergone a significant transformation, now resembling a traditional-style match lake. We've meticulously removed any old or damaged fish and introduced new stock across all species. The lake features depths reaching 16ft on one side, with shallower pockets and an average depth of around 10ft. Keepnets are permitted for anglers. Proven tactics on this match-style lake include feeders, poles, floats, and wagglers—embracing traditional fishing methods. For best results, anglers are recommended to use baits such as pellet, maggot, and corn. A top tip from our bailiffs is to scale down your end tackle for optimal results in this environment. An exciting and exclusive setting which has been unfished for over 20 years, Stonelake is a venue that all carp anglers must visit! Based in Lound, Retford we are perfectly placed next to Nottinghamshire’s Idle Valley Nature Reserve, on our own beautiful private lakes. These15 acres of pristine lake were stocked in the late 1960s with a traditional UK strain of both common and mirror carp. Initially, it served as a pastime for the farmer who began selling tickets to friends, eventually transforming it into what is now recognised as a must visit trout fishery. Under the ownership of Phil and Dani for the last 5 years, the fishery is now family-run, and saw a huge amount of hard work before officially opened for anglers in 2020 as the complex it is today. The lodge, constructed in 2013 with an oak frame and featuring amenities such as a log burner and WiFi, offers complimentary tea and coffee, a licensed bar, and a 5-star hygiene-rated café where anglers can enjoy bacon rolls and more. Their stocking policy aims to introduce fish from 2 pounds upwards, with weekly restocking and an onsite stock pond available for midweek top-ups after busy weekends. The fishery caters to corporate and group days, tailored to individual requirements, including options for tuition, coaching, and more. Brick Lake, the original lake on the site, boasts depths ranging from 5 to 18 feet. Spanning approximately 2 acres, it is characterised by swan mussel beds and a mature environment. To ensure a tranquil angling experience, no more than 12 anglers are permitted on the lake at any given time. One of the swims on this lake offers easier accessibility, with adjacent parking specifically allocated for this swim. Well Lake, with depths reaching 18 feet, spans approximately 1 acre. Its perimeter is lined with reeds, and the lake features overhanging trees, adding to its mature and picturesque surroundings. Typically, a maximum of 10 anglers are allowed on the lake at any given time, ensuring a serene fishing experience. Stag Lake is the shallowest among the complex, with depths ranging up to 12 feet and featuring shallow margins and reed-lined shores. It's particularly suitable for beginners, with a few overhanging trees adding to its appeal. This lake sees nice dry fly action due to its shallowness. Typically, it accommodates around 8 anglers at any given time. Spring Lake is the newest addition to the complex, boasting depths of up to 22 feet. It gradually deepens from the margins, featuring marginal shelves. Covering around 2 acres, it can accommodate up to approximately 16 anglers at once. Additionally, there are 2 more accessible swims on this lake, each with adjacent parking exclusively for those swims. Spring Tactics: As temperatures rise, fish move higher in the water. Damsel nymphs, dry flies like sedges and alders, and other surface patterns are fruitful, especially during afternoon hatches. Summer Tactics: In hot and bright conditions, fish may retreat deeper. Employ small buzzers and nymphs with a slow retrieve for success. However, dry flies can still work well, particularly when there's cloud cover. Autumn Tactics: Tactics shift back towards winter approaches as temperatures cool. Additionally, adding daddy long legs patterns to your arsenal can yield results. Winter Tactics: During colder months, fish tend to be deeper, so using damsel nymphs, cat's whisker flies, and floating or intermediate lines can be effective. 13 Jun 2024 WARDEND FISHERY, SCOTLAND, LIVE ON CATCH Wardend Trout Fishery, fly fishing in Scotland Welcome to Wardend Fishery, nestled in a serene valley just a short distance south of Elgin in Northeastern Scotland.
