OPENTOONZ DESTROYS MY LIFE.

Forums > Community > Complaints

Fradga Featured By Owner Oct 4, 2018  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
I think I am a bit premenstrual right now. I should have done laundry about a
week ago and the lack of clean panties will, according to my calculations become
a problem something like tomorrow. I ate lunch too early wich means my blood
sugar is a bit too low (although I am having a small snack right now that will
hopefully not crash my calory goal) and

And

AND

Opentoonz is fucking my life up. I dowloaded it about two weeks ago. I have
tried to make more and more complex animations to learn the program and when it
works, it is great. I like this. I want to make films with this program. What I
like the most of it is f cours that it doesn't cost the equivalent of four
months of rent like similar programs do. I want a futire with this program.

And then I made an animation of a dude walking up a hillside. It took several
days of concentrated work.

And then I colored the hill.

And then I tried to color the dude.

He is just a blob. He is only going to have one color. No plastic tools or
anything else that usually causes problems.

And all hell broke lose. Bugging like I haven't seen since 2007.

Half of the stuff that usually works tanks completely. Sometimes it just changes
frame spontaneously. Sometimes it changes color spontaneously. Drawn lines takes
five minutes to become visual or wont appear at all. Software crashing every
time I try and play the film.

Total Helter skelter.

I try and download the newest version and the latest updates. The latest updates
wont work because I do not have a glurf32 or whateverthefuck. I try and dwnload
that and get a virus. I get rid of the virus. Some dude who calls himself a
programmer says I might need to reinstall windows to get glurf32.whateverthefuck
to work. I dont want to do that, I just want to color a guy.

If I can't make it work, I can't use it for anything serious. Then I can't put
together a good portfolio fr animation or make my own films) and then I won't be
as prepared as I would like to be to seek for jobs as an animator and I will
beso fucking disappointed.

My day has been an endless labyinth of computer problems and unpleasant hormonal
fuck ups. I am paranoid.

Why? Why can't this work? How can a software used by Studio Ghibli be so clanky?
Is it my computer? Did I do anything to cause this? What? How? Quo Vadis?

I just want to smoke a joint and eat chips and fall asleep but that would be a
bad idea.

Everything is a bad idea.

Disappointment. Disappointment.

Somehow this makes me want to try Opentoonz for myself and see if I get the same
chaos. 0u0

If you want some help;

After seven sorrows and eight disasters, the fill tool started working again.
The reason turned out to be that I turned off the "frame range" thingy.
Apparently, when the "frame range" was selected, the fill tool would ot work. I
had no idea. Now that saved me two or three days of work... The program is much
less clanky all of a sudden.

reminds me of my struggles with Krita animation (whatever you do, don't try
that)

think I know of a pretty good animator who works with Opentoonz.... PowerOfSin
, does Opentoonz ever crash on you? What could be the reason for that,
perhaps new [untested] version? and can this be fixed? [maybe installing
something, or checking that the installation goes properly, or ticking the right
boxes in 'preferences' somewhere?]  or is it better to use another animation
software? like maybe Blender?

Thanks for the warning about Krita btw. I use it for drawing and it is fine but
if the animation department isn't as strong I will not turn to it instead...

Did it crash for me?
Yes, tons
But it's gotten a lot better since I started using it over a year ago.

I have gotten used to it though and save very often by reflex and have
remembered what caused crashes for me and kind of thread carefully when I am
close to them. I am on linux, and I think it is a bit less stable than the other
ones too, but yeah, crashes happen, but less and less with every update.
Looking at the issues you are facing, , I have faced them all individually and
can offer what comes to mind as the cause for them. Getting the newest version
may help, but you did download it two weeks ago, should be pretty up to date,
since there have been no new versions for 2 months or so. If you get that error
for the missing whatever, just reinstall the older version you had before. I
have no clue what may be missing between updates, though :/

So, in order for your issues, what I assume may be going on:
Spontaneous frame change can happen if you accidentally press 'q' or 'w' on the
keyboard to cycle between image numbers and it took me a while to figure out
what it was too. It can come in handy if you know what you are doing, though.
Colors switching may be that you have multiple different levels set up for the
different frames (there is a different letter for each of them) and they all
have individual palettes. It is a bit confusing unless you know how they
function and I am well aware it can be a source of frustration, but I recently
made a tutorial on the topic.
Lines not showing may be because you turned on preview mode on the canvas (the
eye button at the top right of the viewer). In that case it won't update the
image until you finish the line. That mode is for when you want to check some
effects or such things. Otherwise, it could be your brush smoothness is too high
so it calculates too much. Try to lower it in the tool properties (it's around
15 for me).
Crashing when trying to play happened to me on few occasions, and it was usually
when I added some effects or had some weird scale tweens. But I am not sure if
that's what you are facing. You could also be using an odd combination of level
types. If all the frames in the xsheet/timeline are not of the same color
(preferably green) then that may cause some issues too.

I tried synfig too and that thing can't even bring a candle to OpenToonz and I
couldn't figure it out xD
I am well aware that it is quite a frustrating application when starting out,
but once you get in the hang of it, it can do pretty much anything. It is pretty
young too, maybe 2 years of age in it's current form. Ghibli had a bit of a
different version (called just Toonz) but I think they ran into lots of issues
with it in recent times so they made it open source and now the community is
fixing all those issues for them. They made great progress since then, and
looking at older tutorials people made, so many good things were added, it's
amazing.
I would advise sticking with it, especially if you enjoy the tools it offers.
Maybe go through the tutorials I made or ask me for more specific help.

My tutorials are here:

I wish you the best of luck

None of the tips you suggested really fit to my personal chaos. Some of it is
very reasonable but I can't do it, like change the smoothness of the brush tool
for example, that is impossible in my version

Thanks anyway for taking the time! I appriciate it greatly even if I was just
here to whine in my misery an not really look for an answer. Ill check your
tutorials! Thanks again!

You may be able to figure some things out once you go through the tutorials,
hopefully. Good luck once again

Like for example (sorry if I keep rambling).

When my original project turned to an hot mess I saved down the individual
levels, started a new project and loaded the levels back up in a new poject. It
worked at first but now a problem arises that struck the first project with
disaster.

I unfortunately did not understand the difference between a vector level and and
a raster level, (mind you I have been doing this for less than a month so of
course I have no clue) so the stuff that really needed to be in vector is in
raster and I can't find a way to change that (the program does not let me
convert them). This means a tremendous amount of work, of course. But it would
still have been possible if the program did not crash as soon as it reaches a
frame that has been colored... By hand. I have sat and colored most of the
stuff, frame by fram, by hand. Luckily the animated figure only has one color or
this would be impossible but the program crashes 100 % of the times it reaches a
colored frame.

Why does this fucking happen? (I am directing this question to the Uiverse, not
you prsonally so no offence ment) I have had this thing for 3 weeks maximum, I m
not a computer wiz but I cannot imagine what I have done to this thing to make
it behave this badly...? It is not possible to work like this. I see all these
people who make films with this thing and I cant get it to play a single frame
with some gray paint in it

I have started new projects and tried the vector level properly and the fill
tool doesn't even work there either any more (I have used it loads of times
before). It has just gone mental.

Oh my, you really had it rough :<
Vector level is a whole different beast and even I don't yet get it all that
well. I use Toonz Raster for everything since it's easy to fill and easy to draw
in, but it's not the default for some reason.
I am assuming you used the actual raster level (the blue one) and not the Toonz
one (green) since yeah, I don't see that one converting to vectors in any way.
You probably shouldn't do it anyway, vectors are evil unless you know exactly
what you are doing. They are not as simple as flash or as essential as synfig.
If you are trying a new project, maybe take some time with my tuts, since I do
some configs at the start to avoid some of this headache, since I have been
where you were at first, but I am experienced enough with software to know when
a program will cause me issues and I shouldn't commit to big projects until I
learn it's ins and outs

Yeah, I know. Poor pityful me

Wait... You are supposed to be able to use the fill tool in raster lever...? I
saw tutorials that said you couldn't do that... Utter confusion...

Anyway the fill tool has stopped working for me verbatum at the moment and don't
dare to use it to have the software start clanking again...

Most of the frames I color by hand seem to work but about one in ten seem to be
cursed and makes the program crash and I have to delete it and either replace it
with another frame (lyckil it is a walk cyckle so some of them are quite
similar, i could probably have done fewer of them in the first place). Some of
them I will have to redraw from scratch.

I had worked with this for about four days and had the fill tool worked and the
demon curse not hit my software I would have had approximately 20 minutes left
before I could render the finished product.

Now it will take several days more.

I... Just... Cant take it. But I... Just... Can't... Give up either....

Right now I have deleted the rouble causing files and it hasn't crashed in a
whole hour...  I wonder how long this lasts?

Raster level (the blue one) doesn't support fill tools, but Toonz Raster level
(the green one) does.
Tutorials seem to force the blue one on people but the green one is superior in
my opinion. As I said, try go through my tutorials and maybe invest an hour or
two to study them, and I think you may understand things a bit better and be
frustrated less.
Start with this one, make a new project just to test things:

[TUTORIAL] Start animating with OpenToonz 1.2Welcome to the second verson of my
beginner OpenToonz tutorial!
This tutorial is about setting OpenToonz up and how the basic tools work so you
can start making simple animations in it. More specific tutorials may come in
the future.
The images are smaller for easier scrolling so click them to look at the big
versions.
I will assume some basic computer literacy but if anyone finds anything hard to
follow, let me know in the comments and I will try to help.
At the very bottom you will see a few sample animations which which can be made
using only tools explained in this tutorial (animation skills not included).
[[ If during the tutorial you see an italic paragraph in square brackets like
this one, you are free to skip it since it does not contain information required
for the tutorial. But you may read through it to get further insight into some
features that will be covered in further tutorials but for now will just have a
short summary for those curiou
I do admire your tenacity, for sure xD

I'm afraid animation and its associated tools are not my area of expertise, but
there's bound to be something else you can try.
