Your Job Search
analysed by
Susan Gray
sgray@jobleads.com
Hi Wynand,
This free assessment of your job search strategy will give you honest,
straightforward feedback and suggestions on how to maximize your success. Over
the last 15 years, I have coached hundreds of senior-level job seekers just like
you and gathered knowledge about the key enablers and barriers to a successful
job search that I will share with you.
But before jumping right in, I want to let you in on the biggest reason why most
clients struggle. They believe that the majority of all opportunities available
can be found by searching on only a few job boards. To put it frankly, this
search strategy prevents them from seeing approx. 70% of all relevant jobs.
Missing that many opportunities is the main obstacle holding them back from
finding the ideal job. Your answers indicate that your job search strategy is
better than average. However, there is much room for improvement as you are
still missing most of the opportunities available.
You regularly miss approximately 54% of all relevant job offers Changing your
job search methods would unlock up to 2.2× more opportunities

To understand why you are missing so many job opportunities and how you can
improve, I analyzed how you currently use the three primary sources for finding
jobs: job boards, company career websites, and headhunters.
Job boards
You have a saved search on more than five job boards. Congratulations! You are
doing much better than most candidates. The most successful candidates, however,
still step things up to make sure they’ve covered all opportunities. Let me
quickly explain how job boards work. Job boards generally only list jobs from
companies that pay them. For example, company 1 posts their jobs on Job Board A,
Company 2 on Job Board B, Company 3 on Job Board C, and so on. As a result, you
only find a fraction of all jobs available on each job board. Research suggests
that you need a saved search on about ten job boards to see 80% of all published
jobs. Covering 15 job boards will return around 95% of opportunities.
Tip: Make sure to get on both mainstream and niche job boards for your industry.
Now let’s look at how you use saved searches. It’s great to see that you already
have a list of search terms. It brings structure to your job search and ensures
you find what you are looking for. Your list needs some fine-tuning by adding
more relevant keywords.
I recommend taking 30 minutes to think of all the job titles you are interested
in and writing them down. I know from past experience with my clients that most
people initially only come up with a rather short list. When I review the list
with them and get them to really focus on the task, it is further expanded. So,
the key takeaway is to make sure your list is not too short. Once you are done,
jot down all words associated with each job title that you believe would allow a
job search to retrieve relevant matches. Doing this will let you create the
perfect list of search terms. It should contain job titles, hierarchy terms
(i.e. head of), and functional keywords (i.e. controlling). You will use this
list as the basis for creating your saved searches.
It’s great to see that you are already saving several searches on each job
board. Now use your list of search terms to change your existing saved searches,
create new ones if necessary, and do the same on even more job boards. Since you
are not familiar with the Boolean search, I quickly want to show you how this
straightforward search method can help you reduce the number of saved searches
you need to create. A Boolean search is a type of search that allows you to use
operators such as AND, OR, and NOT to get a broader range of job search results
or to define limitations to reduce unrelated results. This is very helpful when
you have a long list of search terms. A Boolean search lets you cover various
areas in one saved search and filter out undesirable results.

OperatorExplanationExampleORResults can include any of the words.Saved search
terms: Head of Marketing OR Director Marketing OR VP Marketing. These search
parameters will deliver results for all three search terms.NOTResults are shown
for all terms preceding the operator NOT. NO results are provided for the
term(s) after NOT.Saved search terms: Head of Marketing OR Director Marketing
NOT Assistant. These search parameters will deliver results for Head of
Marketing and Director of Marketing but will exclude any assistant
positions.ANDAll words must be present in the results.Saved search terms: Head
of Sales AND Software AND Home Office. These search parameters will deliver job
postings containing all the search terms.

Since you don’t have a dedicated inbox to catch all search-related emails, my
final recommendation is that you set one up. Otherwise, they might get lost
among your everyday correspondence and you will miss opportunities due to not
seeing them. A separate inbox will save them in chronological order and make
sure you get wind of each opportunity.
Company career websites
You actively search for jobs on up to 25 company career websites. It’s good that
you haven’t only focused your search on job boards, but roughly 22% of all
opportunities are still passing you by. Limiting your search to only a few
companies is usually only recommended if you want to work for a few specific
companies. Otherwise, I suggest changing your approach. What’s the reason for
this? Roughly 30% of all jobs are only published on company career websites. You
see, many companies must pay to publish positions on job boards, whereas it’s
free to advertise them on their own career website. In fact, the most attractive
jobs are generally only advertised this way. That’s why if you limit yourself to
just using all relevant job boards, you will still only see a portion of all
opportunities available. A desirable job will always attract great interest.
Companies know this, so they just publish it on their website, spread the word
to their employees and network, and receive sufficient applications.
Tip: Track enough company websites to seize all great opportunities.
I recommend creating a list of target companies. Not only should it include more
than just your preferred employers, but also all companies relevant in your
field. In general, your list should include at least 50, if not 100, companies.
Remember to also include companies with longer commutes. Working from home – at
least part time – is now becoming the norm for many roles.
Once you have your target companies, it’s also very important to frequently
visit every career website. It’s great that you already visit career websites
every two weeks. Keep doing this for all companies on your target list. Most
highly coveted positions are taken offline quickly due to the overwhelming
number of applications. Furthermore, the chances of getting an interview are
significantly higher the earlier you apply. Set a recurring reminder in your
calendar and work through your target list at least every two weeks. You should
also keep in mind to follow more companies to improve your prospects of landing
the interview even more. I understand that this is a very time-consuming task,
but trust me, it works.
Headhunters
Headhunters fill roughly 20% of all senior-level positions. So, there is no way
around them. To master this part of the job market, you must first understand
the headhunter’s perspective. Headhunters make a living by finding candidates.
The faster they find a candidate their client hires, the more profitable their
business is. That’s why headhunters prefer using the following ways to find
candidates. First, they post the position on their website and ask their network
for referrals (if the position is not confidential). Second, they try to place
candidates they already know. Third, they search for candidates on LinkedIn. So,
let’s take a look at what all this means for you personally.
Your first course of action is to get to know the most important headhunters in
your field.
You do not know any of the most important headhunters in your field. 20% of all
opportunities are therefore not visible to you. My first recommendation is to
research ten to 15 of the most important headhunters in your field. This is what
I call your target list. It will be your essential tool for conquering
headhunter-controlled job opportunities. You have multiple options how to go
about this. For one, you can use the JobLeads Headhunter Database, which ranks
headhunters based on their past professional positions. You can also search
Google and/or build and update your list over time by scanning job boards for
postings made by headhunters in your field. Do not just go for the first names
you find. Instead, search for those most active in your industry.
Your second course of action is to monitor job postings on the headhunter
websites you’ve put on your target list.
The same rule also applies to company career websites. The most attractive
positions are not online for long, and your chances of landing an interview are
higher the earlier you apply. Set a reminder in your calendar and work through
your target list at least every two weeks.
Your third course of action is to be found!
97% of headhunters search for candidates on LinkedIn. However, almost 80% of all
candidates don’t know that LinkedIn offers powerful tools that allow them to
influence their discoverability and to control how they are perceived. So, what
determines if a headhunter finds you? Basically, it comes down to three things.
One, the amount of content in your profile. Two, your headline. And three, the
usage of keywords. So, let’s see how you are doing in these three areas and
where you can improve.
Your profile contains your full resume. Well done! Adding your full resume to
your profile supplements your profile with meaningful content. Headhunters
searching for candidates will be first shown meaningful profiles. Why? Because
of the keywords. I will elaborate in just a second.
The Headline of your profile
You are not yet using the power of the headline section. I suggest adding it if
you want to be found by headhunters. Keywords in the headline section determine
which profiles are displayed to headhunters when they search for candidates. It
should contain 30 to 40 words about yourself.
Usage of Keywords
Now, as promised, let’s talk about keywords. Once you have a meaningful profile
and are using the headline section, it’s crucial for you to exploit as many
keywords as you can. Keywords decide if your profile stands out or not. When a
headhunter searches for candidates, LinkedIn tries to match the search to the
keywords in the user profile. If the keyword a headhunter has been looking for
appears numerous times in your headline section and profile, you will rank very
high in the search results. Your keywords haven’t been optimized yet. It is
important to put some thought into your keywords and make sure they repeatedly
appear in your profile. Headhunters generally look for specific skills and job
titles. Keywords will give you a huge competitive advantage over the 80% of the
candidates with no keywords. As a result, your profile will always appear above
theirs.
You will be found if you do all of the above, but you also need to have a
convincing profile so that you are actually contacted. In addition to having a
persuasive resume, there are a few ‘soft factors’ – or rather psychological
factors as I like to call them – that play a major role in how others perceive
you. Your profile is a marketing brochure of yourself, and its objective is to
convince the reader you’re the right candidate. So, let’s see how you shape up
here.
Profile Picture
You carefully selected your LinkedIn profile picture. Great decision!
Psychological research shows that the human brain automatically categorizes what
it sees and forms an immediate opinion. To sway perception in your favor, it’s
best to use a high-quality, high-resolution headshot of yourself smiling
directly into the camera. You should also dress according to industry norms,
leave hats and sunglasses off, and forget pictures from your last beach
vacation.
Connections
You have less than 500 LinkedIn connections. My clients often ask me why this
number matters. The reason is simple: many connections send the message that the
candidate is more competent and highly sought after, while few connections give
the opposite impression. So, don’t leave room for interpretation. Reach out to
current and past colleagues, suppliers, customers, alumni, etc. and make as many
connections as possible.
Recommendations
Your LinkedIn profile has no recommendations. You want to have recommendations
because they send strong signals to others. Positive reviews written by others
about your skills (leadership, negotiation, collaboration, etc.) strongly
influence how you are perceived. Ask people to write a recommendation on your
profile and make sure they include some of your keywords.
Your fourth and final course of action is to reach out and build relationships.
The final piece to the headhunter puzzle is your personal relationship with
headhunters. Headhunters will always look to place a candidate they already
know. So, as the saying goes, it pays to know the right people. The most
successful candidates remember this and use it to their advantage. So, what does
that mean for you? You should try establishing closer ties with some of the
relevant headhunters in your field since you haven’t done this yet. This can
take a lot of time, so start with the most important ones on your headhunter
target list. These are the headhunters who had the most job offers in your field
in the past year. This is the only valid indicator of how many suitable offers
they will have in the future.
Recommendations and next steps
Wynand, you are not seeing around 54% of all relevant job opportunities. You are
missing a lot of chances to get the job you want, and you need to ensure you see
as many opportunities as possible. This is the single most important factor for
being successful in your job search.
Here are the major issues holding you back:

Job boardsYou are missing 61% of all opportunities on job boards. Set up saved
searches on at least ten job boards to see 85% of all offers on job
boards.Company career websitesYou are missing most opportunities published on
company career websites. Create a target list of 50 to 100 companies and check
job postings on their websites at least every two weeks.HeadhuntersYou barely
have access to any headhunter-controlled job opportunities. Research ten to 15
of the most important headhunters in your field and visit their career websites
at least every two weeks.
