Over the last 15 years, I have coached hundreds of senior-level job seekers just like you and gathered knowledge about the key enablers and barriers to a successful job search that I will share with you. But before jumping right in, I want to let you in on the biggest reason why most clients struggle. They believe that the majority of all opportunities available can be found by searching on only a few job boards. To put it frankly, this search strategy prevents them from seeing approx. 70% of all relevant jobs. Missing that many opportunities is the main obstacle holding them back from finding the ideal job. Your answers indicate that your job search strategy is better than average. However, there is much room for improvement as you are still missing most of the opportunities available. You regularly miss approximately 54% of all relevant job offers Changing your job search methods would unlock up to 2.2× more opportunities Visible jobs 46 % Undiscovered jobs 54 % 0% 10% 20% 30% 40% 50% 60% 70% 80% 90% 100% To understand why you are missing so many job opportunities and how you can improve, I analyzed how you currently use the three primary sources for finding jobs: job boards, company career websites, and headhunters. Job boards You have a saved search on more than five job boards. Congratulations! You are doing much better than most candidates. The most successful candidates, however, still step things up to make sure they’ve covered all opportunities. Let me quickly explain how job boards work. Job boards generally only list jobs from companies that pay them. For example, company 1 posts their jobs on Job Board A, Company 2 on Job Board B, Company 3 on Job Board C, and so on. As a result, you only find a fraction of all jobs available on each job board. Research suggests that you need a saved search on about ten job boards to see 80% of all published jobs. Covering 15 job boards will return around 95% of opportunities. Tip: Make sure to get on both mainstream and niche job boards for your industry. Now let’s look at how you use saved searches. It’s great to see that you already have a list of search terms. It brings structure to your job search and ensures you find what you are looking for. Your list needs some fine-tuning by adding more relevant keywords. I recommend taking 30 minutes to think of all the job titles you are interested in and writing them down. I know from past experience with my clients that most people initially only come up with a rather short list. When I review the list with them and get them to really focus on the task, it is further expanded. So, the key takeaway is to make sure your list is not too short. Once you are done, jot down all words associated with each job title that you believe would allow a job search to retrieve relevant matches. Doing this will let you create the perfect list of search terms. It should contain job titles, hierarchy terms (i.e. head of), and functional keywords (i.e. controlling). You will use this list as the basis for creating your saved searches. It’s great to see that you are already saving several searches on each job board. Now use your list of search terms to change your existing saved searches, create new ones if necessary, and do the same on even more job boards. Since you are not familiar with the Boolean search, I quickly want to show you how this straightforward search method can help you reduce the number of saved searches you need to create. A Boolean search is a type of search that allows you to use operators such as AND, OR, and NOT to get a broader range of job search results or to define limitations to reduce unrelated results. This is very helpful when you have a long list of search terms. A Boolean search lets you cover various areas in one saved search and filter out undesirable results. These search parameters will deliver results for all three search terms.NOTResults are shown for all terms preceding the operator NOT. NO results are provided for the term(s) after NOT.Saved search terms: Head of Marketing OR Director Marketing NOT Assistant. These search parameters will deliver results for Head of Marketing and Director of Marketing but will exclude any assistant positions.ANDAll words must be present in the results.Saved search terms: Head of Sales AND Software AND Home Office. These search parameters will deliver job postings containing all the search terms. Since you don’t have a dedicated inbox to catch all search-related emails, my final recommendation is that you set one up. Otherwise, they might get lost among your everyday correspondence and you will miss opportunities due to not seeing them. A separate inbox will save them in chronological order and make sure you get wind of each opportunity. Company career websites You actively search for jobs on up to 25 company career websites. It’s good that you haven’t only focused your search on job boards, but roughly 22% of all opportunities are still passing you by. Limiting your search to only a few companies is usually only recommended if you want to work for a few specific companies. Otherwise, I suggest changing your approach. What’s the reason for this? Roughly 30% of all jobs are only published on company career websites. You see, many companies must pay to publish positions on job boards, whereas it’s free to advertise them on their own career website. In fact, the most attractive jobs are generally only advertised this way. That’s why if you limit yourself to just using all relevant job boards, you will still only see a portion of all opportunities available. A desirable job will always attract great interest. Companies know this, so they just publish it on their website, spread the word to their employees and network, and receive sufficient applications. Tip: Track enough company websites to seize all great opportunities. I recommend creating a list of target companies. Not only should it include more than just your preferred employers, but also all companies relevant in your field. In general, your list should include at least 50, if not 100, companies. Remember to also include companies with longer commutes. Working from home – at least part time – is now becoming the norm for many roles. Once you have your target companies, it’s also very important to frequently visit every career website. It’s great that you already visit career websites every two weeks. Keep doing this for all companies on your target list. Most highly coveted positions are taken offline quickly due to the overwhelming number of applications. Furthermore, the chances of getting an interview are significantly higher the earlier you apply. Set a recurring reminder in your calendar and work through your target list at least every two weeks. You should also keep in mind to follow more companies to improve your prospects of landing the interview even more. I understand that this is a very time-consuming task, but trust me, it works. Headhunters Headhunters fill roughly 20% of all senior-level positions. So, there is no way around them. To master this part of the job market, you must first understand the headhunter’s perspective. Headhunters make a living by finding candidates. The faster they find a candidate their client hires, the more profitable their business is. That’s why headhunters prefer using the following ways to find candidates. First, they post the position on their website and ask their network for referrals (if the position is not confidential). Second, they try to place candidates they already know. Third, they search for candidates on LinkedIn. So, let’s take a look at what all this means for you personally. Your first course of action is to get to know the most important headhunters in your field. You do not know any of the most important headhunters in your field. 20% of all opportunities are therefore not visible to you. My first recommendation is to research ten to 15 of the most important headhunters in your field. This is what I call your target list. It will be your essential tool for conquering headhunter-controlled job opportunities. You have multiple options how to go about this. For one, you can use the JobLeads Headhunter Database, which ranks headhunters based on their past professional positions. You can also search Google and/or build and update your list over time by scanning job boards for postings made by headhunters in your field. Do not just go for the first names you find. Instead, search for those most active in your industry. Your second course of action is to monitor job postings on the headhunter websites you’ve put on your target list. The same rule also applies to company career websites. The most attractive positions are not online for long, and your chances of landing an interview are higher the earlier you apply. However, almost 80% of all candidates don’t know that LinkedIn offers powerful tools that allow them to influence their discoverability and to control how they are perceived. So, what determines if a headhunter finds you? Basically, it comes down to three things. One, the amount of content in your profile. Two, your headline. And three, the usage of keywords. So, let’s see how you are doing in these three areas and where you can improve. Your profile contains your full resume. Well done! Adding your full resume to your profile supplements your profile with meaningful content. Headhunters searching for candidates will be first shown meaningful profiles. Why? Because of the keywords. I will elaborate in just a second. The Headline of your profile You are not yet using the power of the headline section. I suggest adding it if you want to be found by headhunters. Keywords in the headline section determine which profiles are displayed to headhunters when they search for candidates. It should contain 30 to 40 words about yourself. Usage of Keywords Now, as promised, let’s talk about keywords. Once you have a meaningful profile and are using the headline section, it’s crucial for you to exploit as many keywords as you can. Keywords decide if your profile stands out or not. When a headhunter searches for candidates, LinkedIn tries to match the search to the keywords in the user profile. If the keyword a headhunter has been looking for appears numerous times in your headline section and profile, you will rank very high in the search results. Your keywords haven’t been optimized yet. It is important to put some thought into your keywords and make sure they repeatedly appear in your profile. Headhunters generally look for specific skills and job titles. Keywords will give you a huge competitive advantage over the 80% of the candidates with no keywords. As a result, your profile will always appear above theirs. You will be found if you do all of the above, but you also need to have a convincing profile so that you are actually contacted. In addition to having a persuasive resume, there are a few ‘soft factors’ – or rather psychological factors as I like to call them – that play a major role in how others perceive you. Your profile is a marketing brochure of yourself, and its objective is to convince the reader you’re the right candidate. So, let’s see how you shape up here. Profile Picture You carefully selected your LinkedIn profile picture. Great decision! Psychological research shows that the human brain automatically categorizes what it sees and forms an immediate opinion. To sway perception in your favor, it’s best to use a high-quality, high-resolution headshot of yourself smiling directly into the camera. You should also dress according to industry norms, leave hats and sunglasses off, and forget pictures from your last beach vacation. Connections You have less than 500 LinkedIn connections. My clients often ask me why this number matters. The reason is simple: many connections send the message that the candidate is more competent and highly sought after, while few connections give the opposite impression. So, don’t leave room for interpretation. Reach out to current and past colleagues, suppliers, customers, alumni, etc. and make as many connections as possible. Recommendations Your LinkedIn profile has no recommendations. You want to have recommendations because they send strong signals to others. Positive reviews written by others about your skills (leadership, negotiation, collaboration, etc.) strongly influence how you are perceived. Ask people to write a recommendation on your profile and make sure they include some of your keywords. Your fourth and final course of action is to reach out and build relationships. The final piece to the headhunter puzzle is your personal relationship with headhunters. Headhunters will always look to place a candidate they already know. So, as the saying goes, it pays to know the right people. The most successful candidates remember this and use it to their advantage. So, what does that mean for you? You should try establishing closer ties with some of the relevant headhunters in your field since you haven’t done this yet. This can take a lot of time, so start with the most important ones on your headhunter target list. These are the headhunters who had the most job offers in your field in the past year. This is the only valid indicator of how many suitable offers they will have in the future. Recommendations and next steps Wynand, you are not seeing around 54% of all relevant job opportunities. You are missing a lot of chances to get the job you want, and you need to ensure you see as many opportunities as possible. This is the single most important factor for being successful in your job search. Here are the major issues holding you back: Job boardsYou are missing 61% of all opportunities on job boards.
