Markham, Little Rock, AR 72201 * * * * OLD STATE HOUSE MUSEUM The Old State House Museum is the original state capitol building of Arkansas and the oldest standing state capitol building west of the Mississippi River. Since 1833, when construction began, the building and its grounds have witnessed many of the most important events in Arkansas history. Today, the museum’s exhibits and events are open to the public. OUR MISSION To interpret the history of Arkansas from statehood to the present, to preserve the Old State House, and to collect and preserve artifacts that aid in that interpretation and preservation. The Old State House has hosted the admission of Arkansas to the Union, a fatal knife fight between two sitting legislators, the Arkansas vote to secede from the United States and join the Confederacy, pioneering medical research into hookworm and malaria, and two acceptance speeches by the president of the United States.
