Firstly, watch a holiday film. I start with Harry Potter before switching to classics like The Family Stone or The Holiday. Secondly, switch up those Spotify playlists – maybe ease in with a little bit of Mariah Carey or Michael Bublé. And finally, snuggle up on the sofa with a good book. From cosy crime novels to warm-hearted romantic comedies and a collection of twelve ghostly tales – all set around the holidays, here are eight books to add to your Christmas reading list... THE CHRISTMAS WISH BY LINDSEY KELK It’s another laugh-out-loud romcom from Lindsey Kelk, but with a snowy Groundhog Day twist. Newly-single Gwen Baker goes home for the holidays to bury her woes with festive films, country walks and a mountain of chocolate, only to find that her teenage crush Dev is back in their small village as well – and it turns out he’s just as kind, funny and good-looking as she remembers. The next day, she wakes up to discover it’s Christmas all over again, but would repeat meet-cutes with Dev really be so bad for a heart that needs mending? £8.99, Waterstones MISTLETOE MALICE BY KATHLEEN FARRELL Originally published in 1951, this ‘rediscovered seasonal classic’ by Kathleen Farrell has been reprinted for the first time in 70 years. It’s described as a ‘devilishly funny’ portrait of a dysfunctional post-war English family’s festivities as they reunite in a seaside cottage for the Christmas holiday from hell. Sorrow and Bliss author Meg Mason says it’s ‘literary comfort and joy’. £9.99, Waterstones THE CHRISTMAS APPEAL BY JANICE HALLETT Following the phenomenal success of her 2021 debut thriller The Appeal, Lower Lockwood’s local theatre group returns to the stage in Janice Hallett’s The Christmas Appeal. The Fairway Players are busy rehearsing their Christmas production of Jack and the Beanstalk to raise money for a new church roof, but goodwill is distinctly lacking among the amateur theatre enthusiasts this holiday season. When a dead body is found onstage, lawyers Femi and Charlotte have to identify both the victim and killer before the curtain closes on their holiday production – for good. £12.99, Waterstones MIDNIGHT AT THE CHRISTMAS BOOKSHOP BY JENNY COLGAN Return to the snow-covered streets of Edinburgh in this sequel to Jenny Colgan’s feel-good holiday read The Christmas Bookshop. Carmen isn’t really looking forward to the holidays; her struggling bookshop is the filming site of a cheesy Christmas movie, an obnoxious millionaire wants to turn McCredie’s into a souvenir shop, and she’s still reeling slightly from a breakup. But just as snow begins to fall and the lights of Christmas blink on, all sorts of lovely new possibilities present themselves…for McCredie’s bookstore, and for Carmen herself. £14.99, Waterstones THE CHRISTMAS JIGSAW MURDERS BY ALEXANDRA BENEDICT Another addictive crime novel by the author of The Christmas Murder Game and Murder On The Christmas Express. When renowned puzzle setter and Christmas sceptic Edie O’Sullivan finds a hand-delivered present on her doorstep – a box with six jigsaw pieces that, when fitted together, show part of a crime scene and a threatening message – she contacts her nephew, DI Sean Brand-O’Sullivan, to help solve the clues. But when the body count starts to rise, Edie knows that only she has the knowledge to put together the killer’s murderous puzzle. £14.99, Waterstones MURDER AT HOLLY HOUSE BY DENZIL MEYRICK From the bestselling author of the D.C.I. Daley series, Murder at Holly House is a cleverly plotted Christmas crime novel set on the 1950s Yorkshire Moors. When a dead stranger is found lodged up the chimney of Holly House in the remote town of Elderby, inspector Frank Grasby is ordered to investigate. But as blizzards hit the North York Moors, cutting off the village from help, and the local doctor's husband is found murdered, Grasby begins to realise that everyone in Elderby is hiding something. £16.99, Waterstones THE WINTER SPIRITS BY IMOGEN HERMES GOWAR The ultimate bedfellow on frosty nights, The Winter Spirits is a collection of new and original ghostly tales authored by some of today’s most loved and lauded writers of historical and gothic fiction – including The Binding’s Bridget Collins, Pandora’s Susan Stokes-Chapman and The Hoarder’s Jess Kidd. The stories are all centred around Christmas or Advent, and will take you from a haunted Tuscan villa to a remote Scottish island with a dark secret. £14.99, Waterstones DEATH OF A BOOKSELLER BY ALICE SLATER Taking place in a bookstore during the run up to Christmas, Alice Slater’s ‘creepy’ crime novel has been given a festive makeover – new endpapers and a new red foiled design. Obsessed with serial killer books and murder podcasts, Roach has worked at Spines her entire adult life. When Laura, a pretty and charismatic children’s bookseller, is brought in to help rejuvenate the struggling bookstore branch, Roach recognizes in her an unexpected kindred spirit. As curiosity blooms into morbid obsession, she becomes determined to be a part of Laura’s story – whether Laura wants her in it or not. £14.99, Waterstones * Topics * YOU * YOU Entertainment More YOU Entertainment The ultimate Christmas TV guide Season 3 of The White Lotus has been delayed until 2025 The best upcoming BBC dramas to look forward to The Christmas TV adverts you need to see this year What to watch on Netflix in November 2023 5 of Matthew Perry's funniest Friends moments Mamma Mia 3 'will happen', says producer The Crown season 6: Release date, first-look, trailer and plot Keira Knightley, Ben Whishaw and Sarah Lancashire to star in a new Netflix spy thriller The 7 best reveals from Britney Spears’ tell-all memoir TODAY’S YOU MAGAZINE YOU loves: Fund Jumpers YOU Fashion Beauty: that flaky feeling Liz Hurley's beauty secrets Actress Liz Hurley on never snacking and why she can’t be trusted with a spray-tan gun Ageless style: colour blocking YOU Fashion Everyone’s talking about: white holes YOU View Help! We’re drowning in brown YOU Fashion Chicken and leek pot pie Use chicken thigh or leftover cooked chicken to make this pie. Chicken stock is ideal to create the rich sauce, thickened with a roux – but you can use dry white wine if you don’t have any stock to hand. Whole roast cinnamon chicken with rice This is a favourite for my family. The whole chicken cooks over the rice, with the spices scenting both to create the most deliciously sticky chicken pilaf. Chicken soup with lemongrass and coconut I have eaten similar soups to this in Thailand, Cambodia and Laos. Each time, with each bowlful, I swear it is the best chicken soup I’ll eat. Miso mustard butter chicken and cabbage If you think baked chicken and cabbage sounds, well, a bit pedestrian, this is definitely not the case. Try to source a pointed, sweetheart or hispi cabbage for this recipe – the loose structure of the leaves means they suit roasting very well. Softened butter mixed through with miso and mustard is a tremendous combination. Chicken adobo This classic Filipino dish is another family favourite. The relatively short list of ingredients belies the intensity of the finished adobo. Chicken with orzo, artichokes and feta I am looking to Greece for the flavours in this recipe. Serve with some lemon wedges on the side to squeeze all over. Chicken dauphinoise with Dijon and cream Looks fancy, this recipe, although it is very easy to make. Ideally, use a mandoline to slice the potatoes - this means that they will all cook evenly and perfectly. Book offer: One Pan Chicken Eating out: The Portrait, London WC2 Chef Richard Corrigan’s creativity is the new draw at London’s National Portrait Gallery, says Tom Drinks: Charlotte’s bonfire bevvies Bold and velvety reds along with warming spicy tipples are my go-to choices for crisp evenings and firework frolics. This week’s reds from Argentina and Australia are party-pleasing, palate-cuddling favourites that provide the perfect touch of cheery warmth on a chilly night. And for something a little bit stronger, try a Palo Cortado dry sherry – a delectable alternative to whisky – or a cheeky canned negroni.
