The Utah Inland Port Authority (UIPA) announced the official approval of its
comprehensive Wetlands Policy, a significant step forward in fulfilling its
commitment to sustainability and responsible land management.

The policy, which was adopted by the UIPA board today, lays out clear
regulations and strategies aimed at the protection and conservation of wetlands
within the project areas under UIPA’s jurisdiction. The approval of this policy
underscores UIPA’s dedication to balancing economic growth with environmental
preservation.

Wetlands play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance, providing
benefits such as flood control, water filtration, and habitat for diverse
wildlife. Recognizing the invaluable nature of these ecosystems, UIPA has taken
decisive action to ensure their protection.

“Our commitment to creating a sustainable future is stronger than ever,” stated
Ben Hart, Executive Director of UIPA. “With the approval of this policy, we are
taking a significant stride towards ensuring that development and wetland
protection go hand in hand.”

The Wetlands Policy addresses crucial aspects of wetland conservation, including
guidelines on Wetland Conversion for Agricultural Production and adherence to
Section 404 of the Clean Water Act. It emphasizes the necessity of mitigating
any adverse impacts to wetlands, aiming to preserve, restore, or enhance their
functions and value, while also ensuring compliance with all relevant wetland
mitigation regulations.

Moreover, the policy summarizes the Wetland Mitigation Sequence, as facilitated
by the Army Corps of Engineers through Section 404 of the Clean Water Act. This
sequence ensures that all potential impacts to wetlands are minimized, avoided,
and, when necessary, offset or compensated for. The policy also explores various
mitigation strategies vetted by the Army Corp of Engineers, such as restoration,
establishment, enhancement, and preservation, to maintain the ecological
integrity of these vital ecosystems.

The policy additionally highlights the Utah Rapid Assessment Procedure developed
by the Utah Geological Survey of the Utah Department of Natural Resources  along
with the Utah Department of Environmental Quality Wetlands Program, both of
which play pivotal roles in assessing wetland conditions and functions to guide
conservation and restoration endeavors.

With the approval and adoption of the Wetlands Policy, UIPA reaffirms its
dedication to preserving Utah’s natural splendor while simultaneously
championing sustainable economic development. The Port Authority remains open to
public engagement, encouraging all stakeholders to stay informed and continue
contributing to the ongoing conversation around responsible land use and
conservation.
