SMART ELECTRIC MOTORBIKES ACCELERATE CHINA’S LOW-CARBON MOBILITY TREND

Environmentally-friendly, long-range electric motorbikes proved the star turns
at this year’s Beijing International Motorcycle Exhibition.

The Beijing International Motorcycle Exhibition: On the road to greener, smarter
technology.

Electric motorcycles attracted at least as much attention as their traditional
petrol‑fuelled counterparts at this year’s Beijing International Motorcycle
Exhibition (Motor China). Although many of the domestic and overseas models on
offer majored on low‑carbon and smart technologies, two dominant directions in
the sector’s development, manufacturers had not lost sight of the need for
cruising range and engine power.

While traditional products, admittedly, still dominated the show, electric
motorbikes were notably well received and the subject of frequent enquiries. Of
particular interest were those with low energy consumption and a high cruising
capacity, as well as those said to offer digitally‑facilitated “rider‑vehicle
integration”.

In the case of mainland‑based electric‑motorcycle manufacturers, such market
leaders as Yadea and Sunra were launching new, supposedly greener, models. Other
brands – notably Gowow and QJMotor – were focusing more on independent research
and development in a bid to sell mid‑ to high‑end models on an export basis.
Several overseas manufacturers – including Germany’s BMW, Japan’s Kawasaki and
Italy’s Keeway – meanwhile, appeared keen to emphasise the design and safety
benefits of their products.

Particularly popular was the Future Mobility Zone, with the stands of many
leading mainland brands, including Yadea, Sunra, Tailg and Segway-Ninebot,
seldom short of visitors. In the case of Yadea, its new fighter‑plane‑like FD9
proved a particular draw. Outlining its advantages, a member of the company’s
on‑stand sales team said: “Equipped with a high‑power MID motor as standard, the
FD9 has a top speed of 160km/h and can accelerate from 0‑100km in just 4.9
seconds. Overall, its 40KW peak power motor is comparable to an 800cc petrol
engine.”

Aside from speed, the distance travellable between charges was also a major
selling point for many models, including racing replicas and commuting‑friendly
scooters. In the case of Sunra’s Miku Super race replica, with its futuristic
straddle and floating seat design, two portable lithium batteries deliver a
cruising range of up to 100km. Segway-Ninebot’s latest E300P, meanwhile, uses
three batteries to provide a NEDC (New European Driving Cycle) range of 120km,
while being able to accelerate to 100km in 7.9 seconds and having a top speed of
135km/h.

Yadea FD9: Peak perform, fighter‑jet contoured and environmentally friendly.

Also attracting considerable attention was Evteker, a Chengdu‑based manufacturer
that had debuted its Pioneer, Explorer and Skylark models at last year’s
International Motorcycle and Accessories Exhibition in Milan. Outlining the
thinking behind the range, North China Sales Manager Wen Jie said: “These models
target leisure driving, off‑road racing and everyday commuting, respectively.
While using eco‑friendly materials, we have also made sure the designs of our
products can also meet the requirements for high‑speed travel over long
distances. The Pioneer, for instance, has a cruising range of up to 140km and a
peak power output of 14.4KW.”

Beijing‑headquartered Gowow, meanwhile, was one of the few domestic motorcycle
makers at the show to be actively targeting overseas sales, with its four‑square
appearance and efficient sport utility functions apparently well‑received in
many export markets. Expanding on the appeal of the company’s range, North China
Regional Manager Zhao Huiliang said: “Our 21700 lithium battery and 6061 forged
aluminium alloy frame are made entirely using our proprietary technology, while
95% of the components used were locally manufactured. As all of our bikes comply
with EU standards, we’ve been doing quite well internationally.”

Given the fast‑growing demand for urban off‑road and touring motorcycles in
China, the company now plans to shift its focus back to the domestic market.
Explaining the strategy here, Zhao said: “In order to meet the ‘smart mobility’
expectations of domestic consumers, ergonomic self‑regulating systems will be
added to the mechanical designs of many of our latest products so they can adapt
to the unique physical characteristics of individual riders.

“The bikes will also be equipped with their own self‑developed ‘human‑machine
collaboration’ chips, which allow various safety, power and stability features
to be customised. Later this year, we also hope to be introducing our Alpha
all‑terrain electric motorcycle to the mainland market.”

Another export‑oriented model came courtesy of the Dongguan‑headquartered Tailg
group, with its S2 high‑speed electric motorcycle incorporating Harmony OS
Connect – Huawei’s proprietary distributed operating system – as its primary
control interface. Outlining its functionality, a member of the company’s
on‑stand sales staff said: “Among the options on offer are NFC smart unlock,
mileage prediction, smart defence and smart inspection.

“The system’s around‑the‑clock instant connection also makes remote monitoring
and operation possible. The bike can also be connected to external digital
mobile devices in order to customise driving parameters and provide rider
assistance even while on the road.”

Perhaps inevitably, in a bid to capitalise on the growing popularity of smart
electric motorbikes, many exhibitors at this year’s event had on offer a range
of compatible accessories, including paired intelligent intercom devices and
helmets designed to deliver optimised rider‑vehicle integration. One of the most
high‑profile of these was Shenzhen‑based Ejeas, which was debuting its Q7 helmet
intercom. Again integrating the Harmony OS Connect system, it is said to be
compatible with a wide variety of helmets.

Running through its operational parameters, Sales Engineer Ou Junxin, said: “Its
800‑metre range intercom allows the rider to communicate with other people while
on the road. At the same time, its integrated stereo Bluetooth headset and AiH1
smart helmet design give the rider the facility to easily control a range of
general, entertainment and navigation systems.

Digital rider‑vehicle‑integration: Smart intercoms and even smarter headsets.

The 2024 Beijing International Motorcycle Exhibition took place from 17-20 May
at the China International Exhibition Center (Shunyi Hall).
