United Kingdom, 18th Century
Britain spent much of the 18th century constantly at war with France. This
occurred because of the rivalry between the two nations to control foreign
colonies and global trade. France rose as a major sea power in the 18th century,
a status that the Royal Navy did its best to curb. On land, several conflicts
occurred between British and French troops in Europe, Africa, North America, the
Caribbean, and India. The French were often allied with Spain during this
century, and the fledgling American revolutionary state secured a significant
victory over Britain with French assistance.

United Kingdom, Pre-18th Century

and instead putting their resources into the Navy. Nevertheless, though Britain
has rarely suffered invasion, it has often been racked by destructive civil wars
in the medieval and early modern period.
