What is network monitoring?

Network monitoring involves the continuous surveilling of computer networks to
detect issues like slow traffic or component failure as well as alerting
administrators to these issues to prevent disruptions and prolonged downtime.

 

Why is network monitoring important?

Its primary use is for pointing out potential performance issues and bottlenecks
before they happen. Human error and configuration issues typically go hand in
hand, and commonly result in minor performance issues that snowball and result
in network outages and disruptions. A lack of network visibility is another
dangerous side effect that comes with an absence of network monitoring. A survey
by Forrester indicated that 81% of IT leaders believe network visibility is
essential for strong network security and response.

 

How does network monitoring software work?

Network monitoring software works by sending requests and queries to network
devices and assets and then reporting the results. Every NMS uses a different
way of querying devices, but regardless of whether that’s Ping, ICMP, or SNMP,
all communications are protocol based. When querying devices, the NMS requests
information using management information base (MIBS) or object identifiers (OID)
in order to retrieve distinct metrics that support performance data. The NMS
then presents this information via the software’s interface.

The key to optimizing any network is first establishing performance baselines.
This is instrumental in determining what protocols or infrastructure to adjust
to keep performance at an optimal level. Understanding behaviors of devices and
