The Central Coast Watercolor Society announces Aquarius 2023 California Open
Watermedia Exhibition, to be held February 23 - April 3, 2023, at Art Center
Morro Bay, 835 Main Street, Morro Bay, CA.

Aquarius 2023 presents the best in watermedia painting, representing a wide
range of subject material and techniques, from experimental to traditional, and
encourages support for watermedia painting as a vital, enduring and expressive
artistic medium.

The call for entries is open to CCWS members as well as to non-member watermedia
artists residing in California. Submissions open December 1, 2022 and close at
midnight January 8, 2023.

The juror for selection and awards is the internationally recognized,

Show, featuring some of the finest artworks on the Central Coast.

This special holiday event offers a collection of exceptional paintings,
photography and fine crafts, spanning a variety of artistic mediums from
traditional to contemporary. Crafts include fiber, wood, glass, sculpture,
pottery, jewelry and more.

HURRY! THIS WORKSHOP IS LIMITED TO 10 STUDENTS

Art Center Morro Bay is proud to host a portrait workshop, Painting the Head in
Oils, by Warren Chang.
In this oil painting workshop, participants will get an inside look into Warren
Chang’s art practice and learn how to paint a head to final painting, using a
limited palette.

Warren will teach the fundamentals of Light and Shadow and how this applies to
painting a portrait, demonstrating painting a head of a live model. Students
will be able to get feedback directly from Warren, ask questions in an intimate
class setting, and follow along with demos. This workshop will cover how to
construct a human head and learn how light falls on form with regard to value
and edge relationships. In addition, Warren will share his unique limited
palette in applying color in the Old Masters style. Students will focus on
drawing the human head and creating life-like skin tone colors.

Art Center Morro Bay is proud to present For the Birds. This exhibition
celebrates the Morro Bay Winter Bird Festival and everything about the birds and
habitats that are indigenous to the Central Coast.

Morro Bay (and surrounding areas of the Central Coast) is a natural habitat and
bird sanctuary to hundreds of bird species. Many of us have had encounters with
some of these rare and wild species that become a part of the nature we cherish.
Although birds don’t always seem to exhibit feelings or emotions, their
behaviors provide a fascinating insight. Birders who carefully study their
subjects learn to read traits that reveal emotional cues that define habits and
survival techniques. This exhibit is a celebration of these magnificent
aviators, that evoke mesmerizing feelings in our soul each time we look into the
sky to see them glide effortlessly in the air.

George’s characteristic, hand blown glass sculptures, capture the spirit of

Pacific Wildlife Care is San Luis Obispo county's only licensed rehabilitation

Art Center Morro Bay is proud to introduce Amelie Butkus, a young writer and
illustrator from Morro Bay, California. Amelie has currently written and
illustrated the young adult mystery novel “A Lamplighter in Larkeney” that is
set to be released this winter on Kickstarter. She has illustrated for multiple
books, podcasts, and comics and is an accomplished character designer and
illustrative artist. Her work spans from traditional, retro-influenced
situational pieces to digital cyberpunk. You can find her work and portfolio at
booksofamelie.com and @ameliebutkus on Instagram.

During this demo, Amelie will begin with an introduction of herself and share
how she works her way through a single rendered full-body character in pencil,
talking about motion and fluidity in blocking shapes, and expressing emotion in

Class description: Learn fine wire wrapping technique utilizing 3 tools; needle
nose, flat tip and cutting pliers along with ½ hard silver plated round wire and
a great variety of beads provided by the artist. Please feel free to bring

This workshop will focus on healing trauma, including childhood abuse
(emotional, physical and sexual) and adult trauma (domestic violence, emotional
abuse, sexual assault) as well as the loss of a loved one or other types of
trauma. Focusing on artistic expression as a healing tool, Beverly, a licensed
psychotherapist, will offer strategies, prompts, demonstrations and guidance to
help you safely identify and express your emotions of fear, anger, sadness, and
shame, heal the damage caused by trauma, and create a positive future.
This will be a safe yet powerful workshop that can help you process unexpressed
emotions and move through stuck places in your recovery.

Telling Your Story & Bringing Vibrancy and Energy into your Work

FREE DEMONSTRATION

Morro Bay Art Association is proud to present a free demo by Toni Danchik who
will talk about her story and the context for her “Africa” inspired paintings.
Her demo will feature her Plein Air process and procedures to bring vibrancy and
energy into her work.

Join us for an afternoon of learning about how living in South Africa impacted
Toni Danchik and her heart to tell the stories of women and children, especially
those living in shanty towns and rural Africa, and how she endeavors to connect
her work to purpose. Now she resides in Southern California where she has been
exposed to the Plein Air movement. She will do a demo on her process &
procedures to bring vibrancy into her work. Toni will also show slides and a
video about South Africa which will precede her painting demo.

This is the Morro Bay Art Association’s free monthly demo meeting.

Plein Air Painting with artist, Pat Watson.

Class description: In two all-day sessions, attending artists will be guided
through basic strategies to create on-site, plein air paintings that have unique
and expressive qualities that embrace both a clearly recognizable sense of place

Art Center Morro Bay is proud to introduce Amelie Butkus, a young writer and
illustrator from Morro Bay, California. Amelie has currently written and
illustrated the young adult mystery novel “A Lamplighter in Larkeney” that is
set to be released this winter on Kickstarter. She has illustrated for multiple
books, podcasts, and comics and is an accomplished character designer and
illustrative artist. Her work spans from traditional, retro-influenced
situational pieces to digital cyberpunk. You can find her work and portfolio at

Zone.

Artists have long been inspired by the ocean’s seductive movement and
transformative power. The sea can be described in an endless number of ways. Its
power and beauty can be refreshing and magnificent, seductive, or its mysterious
vastness can become turbulent, terrifying and downright humbling.

During this exhibit, artists are asked to capture the exhilarating sensation of
the sea in a wide array of ocean themed artworks in all media. Subject matter
should include a part
of or all ocean scape.

This exhibit is open to MBAA Members, in the Main Gallery. Artists may submit up

Morro Bay Art Association is proud to feature the sculptures of Anne Grannis. “A
transplant from New England to California; I grew up in an artistic family. This
was a privilege I relished as art materials abounded and I was never allowed to
be bored. The master sculptors Michelangelo, Rodin and Bernini are my heroes.
Because of my fascination with other places, people and animals, it is no
accident that scuba diving is my second favorite thing to do. I draw inspiration
from these surreal worlds where science fiction and mythology merge.

It is no coincidence that I love to sculpt, as I find living things endlessly
fascinating. I try to stretch my imagination and skills to create a beautiful
sculpture integrating the human and animal forms that look as if they “could be”

3-DAY WORKSHOP - MARCH 24, 25 & 26, 2023, 1-4pm

Art Center Morro Bay is happy to present a 3-day, soft pastel workshop with
award- winning artist Greg Trombly. Focusing on basic composition, drawing
techniques, color and value, this course is designed to provide hands-on
guidance to students in a relaxed atmosphere. Students will learn how to
incorporate contrasting shadows cast from sunlit skies along various rocky
shorelines, to fields dotted with floral wonder. Trombly will provide an
introduction to pastels, surface varieties and how to choose subject matter,
with a short demonstration to begin each day.

Students are encouraged to bring a reference photo of a flowery field, a sunset
and/or shoreline, for these classes. Images are available upon request. This

John Seed is a Professor Emeritus of art and art history who taught at Mt. San
Jacinto College for 31 years. Seed has written about art and artists for Arts of
Asia, Art Ltd., Catamaran, Harvard Magazine, International Artist, The

A Juried Exhibition presented by THE CENTRAL COAST WOODTURNERS at Art Center
Morro Bay.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Entry deadline is June 1, 2023, midnight.

Art Center Morro Bay is proud to host a very special juried exhibit presented by
the Central Coast Woodturners.

This exhibit is a non-themed show focusing on selected wood turned artwork. A
prospectus containing complete entry dates and rules for this exhibit will be
available soon.

The Central Coast Woodturners became a chapter of the American Association of
Woodtuners in September 1991. CCW endeavors to encourage and enhance wood
turning skills through “sawdust” sessions, meeting at selected member shops for

Dyeing Silk Scarves

Morro Bay Art Association is proud to present a workshop, Dyeing Silk Scarves
with Sharon Gellerman.

Sharon Gellerman is a local artist who creates one-of-a-kind, hand-marbled, silk
scarves and silk tallits. Sharon has a fresh and modern interpretation of the
classical art of marbling on fabric. Through experimentation with color,
technique and dye, she has refined her style and designs.

Her sense of art has been greatly influenced by memories of Israel and her love
of the California Coast. These elements are reflected in the intricate patterns
and vibrant colors of her textile designs. These complex designs and skillful
use of color make each scarf or tallit a unique and wearable piece of art.

Marbled silk scarves are made by layering colorful dyes onto a solution of water
and cellulose. This process allows the dyes to float above the liquid. Using
custom made combs or rakes, the layers of color are then manipulated into unique

Brushstrokes is a non-themed annual exhibition, open to all painters who are
California residents. Brushstrokes represents a wide range of artistic
expression in all painting mediums, including acrylic, oil, pastel, watercolor,
encaustic, digital, and collage. No giclees will be considered. Size of the
work, including frame, shall not exceed 42 inches in any direction; and all
artwork must be original and available for sale.
Please note that shipping is not allowed and that selected artwork must be
hand-delivered to Art Center Morro Bay.

Morro Bay Art Association is proud to present the fine art exhibit, Abstraction,
in the Virginia Russell gallery, upstairs.

Abstract by definition is having only intrinsic form with little or no attempt
at pictorial representation or narrative content. Enter the realm of
self-expression and a departure from reality where every brushstroke is a form
of abstraction, displaying a variety of expressive expanses. Here, sharp edges,
solid colors, geometric compositions and brushed, poured or spray-painted
surfaces abound.

During this exhibit, we’re throwing out the rules, where the amount of
abstraction is up to the artist. That’s how art is born and breakthroughs

Morro Bay Art Association is proud to feature the glass artwork of Carolyn
Niblick.

Carolyn has been a resident of Los Osos for over 20 years. Her fascination with
glass began at an early age following a visit to the Olivera Street Market,
located in Los Angeles, CA.

“My favorite stalls were always the glass blowers who created all sorts of
magical little animals. I’m not a glass blower but my journey has taken me
through most other aspects of glass art - stained glass, mosaics, and finally to
fused glass.”

Carolyn has since studied her craft with many talented artists locally and
nationally. Carolyn has been accepted into several juried art exhibits and
enjoys participating in the San Luis Obispo County Arts, Open Studio Art Tour.

Art Center Morro Bay is proud to host a very special juried exhibit presented by
the Central Coast Woodturners.

This exhibit is a non-themed show focusing on selected wood turned artwork. A
prospectus containing complete entry dates and rules for this exhibit will be
available soon.

The Central Coast Woodturners became a chapter of the American Association of
Woodtuners in September 1991. Both organizations are dedicated to advancing the
art and craft of woodturning.

Woodturning is the craft of using the wood lathe with hand-held tools to cut a
shape that is symmetrical around an axis of rotation. Like the potter’s wheel,

The Morro Bay Art Association is proud to present the compelling art exhibit,
Reflections.

During this exhibit, artists are asked to examine the world of art through their
own personal looking glass.

Artists may interpret Reflections as a cast of light, an image you see when you
look into a mirror or the expression of human experience.

Reflections are an important part of art composition. Without reflections, art
may simply have a flat unrealistic appearance. Consider how reflections create
light and shadow in the eyes of a portrait, the sense of peace reflecting across
still water with moored boats and the sparkle across a shiny car or other still

Morro Bay Art Association is proud to host, The Painters Group of the San Luis
Obispo Museum of Art, and their compelling, juried exhibit, Brushstrokes 2023.

This annual event is a collective of exceptional paintings, featuring works from
current TPG and MBAA members throughout the Central Coast.

A variety of accepted mediums include acrylic, oil, mixed media, watercolor,
pastel and digital, encompassing a wide range of subject matter, figurative,
landscape and abstract.

Winter Faire & – Call for Artists 2023

Art Center Morro Bay is proud to present the annual Winter Faire & Juried Craft
Show, featuring some of the finest artworks on the Central Coast.

This special holiday event is open to all artists, providing an opportunity to
exhibit paintings, photography, sculpture and fine crafts. This exhibit is open
to all mediums and subject matter. Crafts include, but not limited to fiber,
wood, glass, sculpture, pottery and jewelry.

This fine art exhibit is designed for customers who are holiday shopping and
looking for special gift ideas!

Artists are invited to submit up to (3) wall hung 2D pieces, (10) note cards,
(5) portfolio prints, up to (12) jewelry pieces, (3) large sculptures and/or
(12) craft items.

Please print entry forms and submit with your artwork on Tuesday, November 7,
2023 from 10am – 2pm. Submission information, fees and entry forms are located
