Greatswords are a type of Weapon in Elden Ring. Greatswords are capable of
inflicting a massive amounts of damage, but sacrifice mobility, making the
player vulnerable and open to enemy and boss attacks if they are not careful.
High risk, high reward is the name of the game with these Weapons, but they can
pancake many enemies, allowing you to finish them off unscathed.
Greatswords can make use of most Ashes of War, so you should experiment with
different ones and see what you like.

Wow, greatswords really got the short end of the stick in this game, huh?
Sure, the unique ones are nice, but the others all have the same limp sweep
R2, save for the claymore.
Don't get me wrong, I love the greatsword class, but for heaven's sake,
there's so much more they could've done

I'd like to know how in the world people responsible for balancing the game
thought that great thrusting swords can be twice as long as greatswords,
twice as fast as greatswords, hit for the same poise damage as greatswords,
have thrusting counter on every hit and weight half of greatswords'
weight....

There should be two animations for greatswords and some colossal
greatswords, the "ungabunga" caveman animation when you're at or below the
weapons requirements, and a faster or more skillful flowing animation when
you are well beyond the weapons requirement.
Ex, The Claymores req are 16S/13D
At 16S/13D you would swing use it like a crude caveman
At 32S/26D you would wield it like a competent swordsman

Definitely could've used more animations, but I guess Ashes of War balance
it out a bit. Been using Knight's Greatsword because it looks the best.
Really wish the rolling/crouch R1 was a poke (it's literally the pointiest
greatsword...) but besides that, with sword dance, fun weapon.

Wish they didn’t attack so slow. Compared to DS3 these weapons not only
have too low of damage, but also attack way too slow. The removal of
individual attacks having poise for the old poise system also basically
nerfed these weapons. Unless you’re using super high poise armor, you’re
not gonna trade with most faster weapons.

Everyone here is having a mental breakdown over the animations, and I have
to relate. They reused so many animations from previous games, which I
understand, but they couldn’t reuse or at least be inspired by the old
weapon animations? Now we got cavemen with swords instead of someone
competent with one.

I used my Claymore on DS3 all the way to ng+7 cuz it dealt decent damage
and it was fast but here they really messed up this weapon type. They're
too slow, each one handed swing takes like 10 seconds to do and the two
handed speed it's also terrible. Rip...

I know this class has a few of the best weapons, but I hate how a stiff
breeze can still knock me over even when I'm twohanding one with 30 poise
That's like, mid level poise right? Shouldn't I at least be able poise
through being shivved by some goblin?
I feel like the aow's kind of carry this class

why the f*** is the claymore the only one with a thrust r2. also if this
game has DLCs, i want a gs with the facny ds2 greatsword animations and
with thrust r2s or im RIOTING. this is the most disappointing thing about
greatswords in this game, they literally all have the same moveset and its
the sucky one with swips and slam downs. its a sword ffs not a club.
it seems nothing will ever top the Loyce GS or Mirrah GS.

2H str build and I invested all by best stones in a bastard sword +17
because: As mentioned in a comment here the jump attack is decent, charged
heavy has a good chance of not whiffing against bosses compared to a
hammer, heavy sweep has decent crowd control, swords are badass and I dodge
roll and avoid so I do not need UGS hyper armour. equals fun.

its really disappointing that no other great sword has thrusting strong
attack and for no good reason either. like I can swing almost every one of
them over my head and smash it into the ground with no regard for technique
or weapon degradation, but stabbing is completely out of the question
unless its a claymore. Looks like ds2 remains the king of move set variety.
Honestly, the loyce great sword alone puts every weapon on this list to
shame.

I love powerstance GS on PVE with either full STR, STR+INT, STR+FAITH
Going with both the jump attack talisman and body armor.
The jump attack deals a lot of stagger damage.
When going Str + faith/int, I make sure both of my GS have the same
elemental damage so that I can match the elemental damage boost with the
flask.
On Faith, I went with Fire so that I could buff myself with Golden Vow and
the Flame incantation buff thing.
I'm dealing more than 2k damage per jump attack with 50 faith and 30str.
Flame incantation buff doesn't last that long but Golden Vow and the Flask
buff have good uptime.
The jump attack covers a lot of ground so it is actually easy to position
out of bosses swinging range by simply sprinting and baiting attacks, and
then jumping in which is more stamina efficient than rolling and rolling
imo

Swing speed both 1handed and 2handed is slower than DS3 and only Claymore
received the good R2 poke. But we can hope that they might get buffed in a
patch like it happened before in DS3

IMO the Greatswords are the best weapon type for the double Seppuku build,
the powerstance moveset is fast enough to deal all 6 hits on the L1s and
they reach 100 bleed buildup at +25 without counting extra build up from
ARC stat, most bosses will die faster than the whole ritual of seppukuing
pre-fight.

Greatsword in Eldenring is straight up downgrade of Curved Greatsword in
term of damage, range and moveset (except claymore)
It slow, doesn't have enough range or poise damage so you have almost no
chance to attack against some bosses without getting hit (mostly late game
boss though)
but if you insist to use Greatsword I recommend Death's poker or
Blasphemous Blade which have strong and unique weapon art

Not sure how the damage adds up but I'm power-scanting the blasphemous
blade + GOG. Although I'm thinking of replacing the GOG with a sword that
can use the Sacred affinity + Sacred Blade ashes of war. Looking at the
chart, the Iron Great sword looks the best lol

Not only did they kill the pure pierce Lucerne Halberd, ultra greatsword
vertical 2H R1s, they only gave Claymore the 2H R2 Poke among the
Greatswords.
Loved Hollowslayer GS' 2H R1s+R2 pokes & Lucerne with Leo Ring in DS3 PVP.
Feels bad.

Surprisingly gargoyles black blade is actually a really good pick for faith
users and I’ve seen that it beats even the halberd version and it’s better
than each other faith greatsword compared to each swing of any other
greatsword for a faith user. I wont Say that it has a better weapon art but
it’s not bad. Close second would be the sacred relic blade for damage per
hit without weapon art

Some would say straight swords are the most balanced, versatile weapon. But
I would say greatswords are the weapon you can go through the entire game
without needing a secondary weapon. The ability to stun enemies with your
basic r1/rb is extremely useful, something straight swords can't do against
a lot of enemies. Greatswords are just a good balance of power, reach, and
speed. Is there anything a colossal weapon can stun with an r1 than a
regular greatsword can't?

I was so disappointed the first time I two-handed a greatsword and swung
it, and discovered that you still swing them by slamming them into the
ground like blunt lumps of metal. The greathammer moveset got such an
upgrade in this game, it's dynamic and interesting! I had really hoped that
they'd gotten creative with greatswords too, but alas, it feels exactly
like I'm playing DS3. I'm sure some people are happy when something is
exactly the same across games, but I like it when playing them actually
feels substantially different.

why is marias listed as the best wtf? its broken rn and unusable,
blasphemous blade needs to be listed as the best gs with golden order right
behind it. the GO has insanely high holy dmg and blasphemous has decent
fire as well as the hp on kill skill and the weapon art which will one shot
most players

EDIT THE TABLE : The vales for the Knight's Greatsword are not correct on
this table. The weight is 10, and the FP cost of the skill is 5( -8 ). This
table has them reversed.

If you're looking for a Hollowslayer/Mirrah equivalent, both the BK and the
Inseperable Sword use it's light attacks. You'll have to slot a Ash of War
for a thrust attack however.

There is a greatsword called Helphen's Steeple obtained by beating one of
the skeleton boatmen. It's Northwest of the Snow Valley Ruins Overlook
grace in the Mountaintop of the Giants. The boatman is hiding at the bottom
of a cliff.

There's a Great Sword called Helphen's Steeple that can be found South of
Castle Sol and North West of the Snow Valley Ruins Overlook by Killing a
Boat Skeleton
101 Physical and Magic damage
D STR, INT and E DEX Scaling, Requires 19 STR, 10 DEX, and 22 INT
Special Skill is called Ruinous Ghostflame: Does a swing that enchants the
weapon with a ghostflame that adds Magic damage and according to
description "Adds a bitterly cold bite"

Yikes, all of the greatswords got the short end of the stick this time
around. The Weapon Arts are equally as bad as always. Meanwhile, I can do
more stagger/damage with the longswords' Stance attacks.

there is a nother greatsword called inseparable Sword, it can be aquired by
doing the Fia Questline, you will get the twin armor from D, the you need
to get to the Aquaduct of Sofria and find the brother of D and give him the
armor. Then finish the Questline of Fia and reload the area and the brother
will turn up. Reload again after talking to him and it should be laying
there where the brother was standing. It is a str faith and dex sword with
B scaling in Faith

I found the greatsword! Just follow the road east of the shack of rotting
and you'll find one of those big cart things with the treasure chest in the
back guarded by two giant dog headed things. The greatsword is in that
chest
