Asahi Linux<p> ⚠️ WARNING ⚠️ </p><p>We have discovered that under certain
circumstances, a combination of two Apple bugs might leave your machine in a
difficult-to-recover-from state after upgrading to macOS Sonoma with an Asahi
Linux install, or if you install Asahi Linux after having upgraded to macOS
Sonoma.</p><p>We're still investigating and will update with more information as
we learn more.</p><p>The worst combination of problems seems to only affect 14"
and 16" machines. However, Sonoma upgrade bugs can leave any Mac in a state with
damaged System Recovery, which is undesirable. For this reason, we do not
recommend upgrading to Sonoma right now.</p><p>This issue is not caused by bugs
in Asahi Linux nor any of our tooling, and it is entirely outside our control.
Nonetheless, we will update our installer to detect broken Sonoma installs and
refuse to make any changes in that case, although this won't help people who
upgrade to Sonoma after.</p>
Kye Fox :veripanda1: (spooky)<p>"paws vs. maws"</p><p>This conflict is
unnecessary</p><p>Peace in our time is possible</p><p>We have only to reach out
and claim it</p><p>What I propose is simple: paws and maws</p>
Manawyrm<p>My classic ThinkPad T43 (from 2005) used IDE/PATA storage. That's
slow and unreliable, especially after the PATA-&gt;SATA bridge IBM included.
</p><p>Instead, let's use NVMe SSDs in the ExpressCard/34 slot!<br>I modified
the BIOS to include a custom Option ROM, which can translate the BIOS disk
accesses into NVMe.</p><p>Windows XP, Debian 12, MS-DOS 6 can boot fine from
NVMe!</p><p>Option ROM Source:<br><a

Dr. jonny phd<p>Helping someone debug something, said they asked chatgpt about
what a series of bit shift operations were doing. He thought it was actually
evaluating the code, yno like it presents itself as doing. Instead its example
was a) not the code he put in, with b) incorrect annotations, and c) even more
incorrect sample outputs. Has been doing this all day and had just started
considering maybe chatGPT was wrong.</p><p>I was like first of all never do that
again, and explained how chatGPT wasnt doing anything like what he thought it
was doing. We spent 2 minutes isolating that code, printing out the bit string
after each operation, and he immediately understood what was going on.</p><p>I
fucking hate these LLMs. Empowerment is learning how to figure things out, how
to make tools for yourself and how to debug problems. These things are worse
than disempowering, teaching people to be dependent on something that teaches
them bullshit.</p><p>Edit: too many ppl reading this as "this person bad at
programming" - not what I meant. Criticism is of deceptive presentation of
LLMs.</p>

Paul Fenwick<p>Getting lots of trick or treaters this year.</p><p>I've put an
onion in the bowl of treats after hearing a story about Halloween potatoes last
year.</p><p>Most kids have been "is that an ONION!? Why would anyone want an
ONION!?"</p><p>But three kids so far have been "Is that an onion? A *real*
onion? THANK YOU!!"</p><p>I'm going to need more onions.</p>

Petey P. Twelve<p>"Why programmers like cooking: You peel the carrot, you chop
the carrot, you put the carrot in the stew. You don’t suddenly find out that
your peeler is several versions behind and they dropped support for carrots in
4.3" -- Randall Koutnik</p>
sdw<p>I am begging Apple PR to understand that absolutely nobody is insane
enough to put a fucking iMac on a kitchen island while you are cooking. end the
